The average Taiwanese hold very distorted views on mainland China but they're unaware. The interesting thing is whilst almost all Taiwanese hold no doubt their media have political inclinations, when it comes to mainland China, they seem to lack the ability to critically self doubt and challenge their perceptions on China. 新年快乐 Xiangyu & Lin Chi-Yu! Wishing you Health, Wealth & Prosperity in the year of the Snake. As a Malaysian Chinese, I support Taiwan reunification with our Motherland. By the way, My ancestors are from Tong'an district in Xiamen.
to xiangyu and guest chiyu... thx guys for the interesting and a constructive dialogue... looking forward to your next chapter of strait talk... a happy cny...
Serious question: would he be pro reunification if the mainland solved the housing affordability issues in Taiwan? I thought it was interesting that the reason he’s not pro-unification is because of the mainland’s perception on the world stage which translates to “What westerners think of mainland Chinese” since China is more popular in the global south than the US. We all know the only reason Westerners “like” Taiwan is the same reason they “like” Ukraine, the Kurds, etc., they love when other people are used as cannon fodder against their enemies. Compared to the mainland, Taibei is basically a Tier 3 city so wondering of the housing in affordability, disappearing birth rate, and declining economy (outside of TSMC) is going to just force Taibei to reunify by choice. This was a really interesting talk so thank you 翔宇 and your friend.
I think that, combined with the bankruptcy of the "free world's" image, will get people in Taiwan to realize that we were blessed with a very good plan b (reunification whenever we wanted) this whole time. I do think "forcing Taipei to reunify by choice" is precisely the strategy being pursued by Beijing
That’s a great way to put it and quite a luxury for Taiwan. It really mirrors a family dynamic. No matter how much family disagrees, argues, etc. family is always welcome home.
Taiwan will never be able to rule itself as an American colony. However, should it reunite with mainland. It will truly be able to become independent in a one country, three systems. Because unlike the US, China does not have an interference policy.
@ Hongkong had to be returned to mainland China. So the British did that. It would require another Opium war to debilitate the mainland in order to make HK a colony again. But China is smarter and wealthier now. The UK economic growth is left in the dust. It’s not a smart move at all.
I think people did see or think Mainland China was stupid, but in a couple of years, China will close the gap with TSMC, and most of the leverage Taiwan had for negotiation over reunification will be gone.
Can a Taiwanese shopper legally buy a copy of Mao's Little Red Book or is it banned? I understand it is easy enough to find online, I am just curious to know if some literature from The Mainland is still officially censored in Taiwan.
IF you stay status qou, tension will continue and Taiwan will be used by foreign power as political football. You know these foreign power dont care what will happens to Taiwanese peoples.

To be a colony of America is going to look like South Korean politics. If it gets more compromised by America, it’ll look like Ukraine.
I think you kind of forgot Hong Kong there 😂

Martial Law has been lifted, those types of laws are unconstitutional
