- Being a referee is the most thankless task in MMA, with every mistake condemned while positive moments often get overlooked.
Good officiating has saved fighters careers and created some of the sport's best moments, and in today's episode we showcase some of the biggest examples.

Had to chop the Kongo/Barry segment of the video for copyright reasons, sorry if it takes anything away from the videos but I just can't abandon 2.5 million views.
Lol that’s some real shit , can’t get mad at that , get yo money playa . We all know what happened anyway.
Love your vids man
Say less fam. We got ya
You all probably dont care at all but does anyone know of a tool to get back into an instagram account?
I stupidly lost the login password. I would love any tips you can give me.
@Musa Rhett Instablaster :)
You killed me with: "Of course Steve Mazzagatti for...retiring" LMAO
This!
D:
Haha yeah
Yes! 😂
Of
Steve mazzagatti decides to retire has definitely become the best decision made by a referee of all time
I saw him 2 months ago near the time keeper in a white/black stripe shirt.
Lukas Marchia a better decision would be for you to learn 3rd grade grammar
70mjc k grammar nazi
Neverlandia who the hell cares?
I mean, he's essentially saving lives at this point.
Mario “wait till he sees the light” Yamasaki
Who can forget the time he was letting Priscilla Chacoiera be a warrior.
Mario "if he dies he dies" Yamasaki
Mario "I don't see blood yet!" Yamasaki
@@Senrabekim That fight annoyed me. She was just eating Schvenkos punches.
Already unconscious mma fighter:
Steve: if he dies.. he dies.
Hiram Pratt kind of like mario Yamasaki
@Careful! i'm a retard that's the reason there are refs lol
@Careful! i'm a retard it's too dangerous
Nice rocky refrence
@Careful! i'm a retard I'd reply but you're username told me otherwise
That was weird watching herb dean going savage mode in the cage
Ikr, like "damn herb dean throwing bombs what is this?"
Herb dean be like "can you dig it?suckaaaaa!"😂
Being an ex-competitor has made for some good refs across a lot of sports.
Carl Manvers 100% agree, just like the ref who caught and fell with the Muay Thai fighter that got KO’d
@SilentBob420BMFJ His true calling wasn't fighting but officiating and I'm okay with that.
Herb Dean’s stoppage in the Mir Sylvia fight can’t get enough love.
Agree. It should be required viewing for future MMA refs.
People hate on Herb too much imo. He's had some bad moments but he's overall a good ref
I mean its a fight. Tap or snap. There are fighters who only cares getting slept, doesnt give a damn if they have broken bones.
I love how you snuck in "The juicest" when talking about Lesnar lmfao
That made me chuckle
and Carwin too
I was laughing my ass off!!
M Harish boi he been popped multiple times for anabolic roids he didn’t get caught earlier cuz of pre USADA he been juicing for a long time
tee hee :D
Silva was pissed that he couldn't fight but later appreciated that the fight was stopped. It's crazy to imagine the mental toughness it would take to want to continue to fight in such a circumstance.
"The arm was still attached. Why stop the fight?" - Mario Yamasaki probably
This video showed me 2 things:
One, wow some refs are really earning their money...and
Two, 99% of martial arts fans dont know/see shit about what they are watching
Lmaoo when i read your comment.
yep, i'd say that only people with personal experience knows what is going on. or possibly someone that has at least studied it but most people watch just to see a fight ^^
You have to keep in mind that at a lot of venues (and basically all regional events) there aren't good screens for the arena viewers to see the close camera angles you can see from home. They aren't hearing the commentators and may not be seeing any replays. Some of the audience are barely making out what is going on, and they see that suddenly the ref has stepped in and stopped the fight. So you have to cut them a bit of slack for not immediately seeing what we see on close-up, slow motion replays.

jmass508 yea we watched the video bro
“Would have “ buddy
@@abelphilosophy4835 Or would've.
if it was mario yamasaki: "good job, Shane. you're hurting Brock's arm with those taps. come on people, he was fighting back"
Actually he was more known for ignoring taps and people going unconscious.
"Nevada won't legalise attempted murder" got me. 🤣🤣 miss yamasaki and his 'they fight til the death' attitude. Lol
4:15 The other guy thought he won and put his own hand up lmao
Akshay lmfao I peeped too
and leg to go with that
Did they have the same name or what?? Hahahaha poor guy mustve been embarrased
😬
Fuck me lmao 😅😭🤣
Shout out to Leon Roberts. An afraid or inexperienced ref in that situation may have not intervened as effectively, that dude very well could’ve murdered the already unconscious opponent.
Dude screwed damien maia. He was trying to get usman's back and he stood them up.
Olin M Imomihz cool
JOSEPHMAN36 & keith peterson smelled like booze & cigarettes. everyone got an excuse
He had a shocker in petr yan vs Jose Aldo
I have seen hundrends of fights with Big John and he never made a serious if any mistakes in them. Absolute class and a standart for MMA referees.
Man has created and amended many the modern MMA rules, He's legendary
Dudes the goat. Don’t think he’s ever had an early stoppage, or controversial decisions. Dude truly understands the sport. I’d love to see how he does a judge
@Justin-jg2hi he's had a few. I remember one with Matt Linland. He tapped out but Big John hesitated when Linland stated he didnt. The fight continued and the winner tapped him out again in the second round.
Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin in one of the "juiciest" fights. Haha I get it
Young Warrior Back when USADA wasn’t a thing :‘) The good old days!
Yeah a lot of juicy fighters 🤣
"Mario Yamasaki once said, "If I heard them snore that's the time I'll stop the fight.""

Literally nobody :
*Shaquille O-Neal : -_-*
Then he appeared in UFC Undisputed 2010 as a playable character. I kid you not.
Jason Worth lol
Seems where ever Paul Heyman goes he's always spitting cold hard truth bombs.
Was that Goldberg behind him?
@@johnnykurplutzo6789 Yep.
@@johnnykurplutzo6789 I think so.
It’s scary to think that Mazzagatti could’ve severely halted the evolution of the sport that we all love by his incompetence. I think that MMA refs need to have legitimate experience in submissions and striking to understand when a fighter is out.
Josh Rosenthal will always be remembered for that amazing job at 116.
I would say for years after the fact on mma message boards that Big John and others would’ve (wrongly) stopped it and I could point to fights that were (wrongly) stopped for less.
I’m so glad the gods allowed Josh to be there that night because that was one of the best comebacks ever and other then dominating Mir was probably his coolest win
I think reffing would be so cool, but man it’d be so hard. I would’ve stopped that fight way early
Kongo vs Barry wasn't there, but Miragliotta showed Big John' levels of excellence in this fight.
Josh had a bottled fight in one of the few stances that Chael Sonnen was right about something, his first fight against Paulo Filho in the WEC 31... only really serious mistake I remember by him
You gotta love Big John. Class act.

Narrator: And Steve Mazzagatti, for retiring
Me: I don't get it
RUclips: Up next: Worst Steve Mazzagatti Moments
Me: Thanks king
I’ve met Big John McCarthy and have taken his Command Course. (I did not pass. It’s intense) l respect the other side of combat sports; the reffing and the judging much more so!
Im curious what does his course entail?
@@dun0790 I'm a year late, but its a 2-3 day course where you have to spar, show proper techniques, and understand the rulebook to a T. Then for an exam you have to referee several sparring matches where the fighters WILL preform illegal moves and do attacks that are tough calls. If you miss something or need work they will train you and teach you. However in the exams a single mistake can cause failure. This is because passing the COMMAND course is basically a license to referee, if you miss a call, you aren't ready.
A missed call is like not knowing or remembering which is the break pedal on a car. You're going to get someone killed or maimed.
@@TwoBitty wow thank you very much for all the details sounds fun
@@TwoBitty Thanks for the info
...for retiring! Best thing I’ve ever heard in any RUclips channel covering anything MMA.
As someone with a severe traumatic brain injury, a lot of respect for these referees that take the well-being of the fighters into heavy consideration. The brain is so f****** important. Look at the boxer Prichard Colon
“For retiring”.

2:36 I would've gotten worried for the fighter's safety and stopped the fight right there. I'm glad he didn't!
Amazing read by the referee.
Big john in the robbie Lawler vs Rory McDonald fight . Excellent job in not stopping the fight when lawler was getting pieced up . Lawler and big john talking back n forth while fighting. Very good call as Lawler went on to win the fight
Fck that was a good fight, that staredown they had after whatever round it was I can't remember. Fck man.
that part was so fkn funny :P
that crack about mazzagatti was funny as hell. on a different note, i had no idea trigg was reffing nowadays.
2:11 wtf was Dan thinking haha
RIP Steve "Non-sense" Yamagazzi
Damnnnnnnn he got that just for weed.....in my Dave Chappelle voice
Fuck i know right, that'll probably be 2 to 400 hours community work here in nz, give or take depending on your record ofc.
And community work is a fuckin piss take lol especially on Sundays, been to two different centres
0:56 Rare footage of Mario Yamasaki actually doing a good stoppage.
Mark Goddard has definitely been one of my favorite, very insanely good reffing and mediating that man does
Big John McCarthy is honestly the best ref UFC has ever had. Herb dean is one of the greats as well. Most of the other refs are pretty terrible at making calls.
Jason Herzog?
No wonder they say being a referee is such a "thankless" job. Get it right 10,000 times, no one cares. Fuck up once, you're a piece of shit.
@@The_Capo671 Herzog is probably the best rn
John McCarthy never misses an opportunity to yell: "Get off the fence!" Big John's daughter was dating a man for 2 years, who failed to propose. So, one day Big John confronted the man and said: "Are you gonna' marry my daughter or what?! Get off the fence!" :)
thank you Steve for retiring you saved a lot of fighter with that decision😂
The end was FREAKING HILARIOUS!!!
Honorable mention: Marc Goddard.
He just hasn't been doing it as long.
"Coach ya foita', not me!"
Who'd he say that to?
6:19 the face of "I regret raising my hand for volunteering..."
Excellent storytelling and editing.
Jason Herzog is the true gold standard of refereeing.
You deserve more subs my man. You’re videos, while informal, are extremely real and insightful. Keep up the good work!
big john & herb dean will always be my favorite
Never seen your channel before
You start off the video with Welcome to Station Square...
Alright, I'll watch more
Damn at 6:06, the guy on the right use to be my middle school’s wrestling coach. I never knew Josh Rosenthal would officiate one of his fights.
Great content! Thanks for doing these.
"appearing on discussion shows" No, that's Bas Rutten.
*WHEN YOU SAID AND OF COURSE STEVE MAZZAGATTI I WAS LIKE OK YOU JUST RUINED YOUR ENTIRE VIDEO MAN THEN YOU SAID FOR RETIRING THAT KILLED ME GREAT VIDEO MAN*

Sonic adventure theme!!!! Haha it was a good game I liked raising the Chao creatures on it lol 😂
Was that Sonic Adventure music at the beginning? That's dope.
I was eagerly awaiting what ended up being the very first clip lmao well done

Man i'd get SO MUCH anxiety being a ref, some of the mistakes some of them make ANY of us could make, like poor old herb dean in the askren vs lawler fight, like most of us would have thought robbie was out and stopped the fight because we'd want to save robbie from being choked while uncurious
“Biggest and juiciest fight” definitely the juiciest lol 😂
"Of course Steve Mazzagatti for retiring"
Does that mean that most referees die in the ring? Lmao
Mazzagatti is that bad. Look up Dana White's rants on him.
It took me a second to realize at the end when I heard Steve mazzetti for retiring 😂😂❤❤
I legit lol'd at that last honorable mention.... for retiring 😂
"ARE YOU READY...?
" ARE YOU READY..?
"LET'S GET IT ON!!" 👊
4:40 "Juiciest" 😏 I see what you did there
One thing wrong: John McCarthy was turned down from fighting in the early UFC's because he trained BJJ under the Gracie family and they didn't want him in it because he would have been the biggest threat to Royce due to his size and BJJ knowledge.
Thats a candid take. Pretty interesting.
Woah I never knew this. Didn’t know he was that good a fighter
The Men in Black OST was just perfect. Kudos to you!
I was wondering if you’d say anything about Mazzagatti.... and you did it perfectly! 😂👌🏻
Roberts in no stranger to elite mma 4:12 *shows clip of Roberts accidentally raising both fighters hands*
I think Stout lifted his own arm as if to say WTF
He wasn't at fault. The fighter lifted his own arm.
@@chopsuey-- maybe because he thought he won because the ref started to lift his arm up
Cheik Kongo vs Pat Barry by far, you would’ve though it should’ve been stopped sooner but no! good on the ref for letting it go on, many would’ve stopped it and we would’ve never gotten possibly the craziest comeback EVER in UFC history.
Mack V yeah good for him letting Kongo get knocked unconscious twice
It 100% should have been stopped at the first KO if not the 2nd. The fact that Mirg let it go is not a good thing. IMHO it is one of the worst ref fuck ups. In no instance should a fight continue if the fighter has been knocked down and then proceeds to eat multiple shots with his hands down by his sides. That is a concussed fighter.
That short clip of Dean fighting was quite interesting... Even Dean needed to be stopped by a ref. .. kind of changes my perspective on ref stoppages
the ending was so good this video deserved a like.
Without Big John, there is no MMA.
100% agree
You: "and of course Steve Mazzagatti.."

EXCELLENT vid. Wholesome content. Thanks for starting off with the old school UFC fanfare and the sonic music!! Subbed.
That damn sonic adventure music gets me every time
And Rosenthal should have stopped the Carwin-Lesnar fight.
Brock's rival in the background there. Goldberg 😂😂😂😂😂

Daaamn hearing Joe say " People are yelling out it's bullshit, but there is no bullshit in that right hand " is hilarious
God...I love that you use the Central Station hub music from Sonic Adventure as your opening music. So much NOSTALGIA.
I'll always respect Marc Godard. Sadly, I can't remember which fight it was but here's what happened : Fighter A's back was against the cage, while Fighter B was trying to take him to the ground.
Fighter A grabbed the fence, and in the process he ended on top of Fighter B. All because he grabbed the fence. Marc Godard stepped in immediately and told Fighter A that the position he had gained was illegal. Godard stood them up again and resumed the action.
Quick thinking, was smooth and was one of the best call Godard could have made.
Can anyone remember what fight it was?
@Arca Menel dunno the fight, but he needs to be on this list.
Between "Coach your fighter, not me!", noticing that Gustafson poked Texiera in the eye, and watching in horror as Steve Percival let Magny & Lumbard go at it too long - Goddard is an amazing ref.
@@Herperof1000derps Amen to that!
Can't believe that I'm replying to a 3yr old comment...but I remember the fight lol... it's Jacare vs Romero - round 2, Yoel grabbed the fence, defending the takedown, ended up on top and Goddard stood them up... remember it because I'm a huge fan of both fighters 😁

Damn what a beard
Man, I've only just discovered the world of MMA. I am loving these clips!
If you get a chance look for UFC 1-30 "the beginning" very few rules, no weight classes, no time limits.
mazzagatti joke at the end got me good, solid video
IF IT WERE MAZZAGATTI THE FIGHT WOULDVE BEEN OVER LMAO MAN THE MOMENT A FIGHTER SLIPS AND FALLS OL STEVE IS LOOKING TO END THE FIGHT
Unless they're getting choked out then he decides to fuckin send his wife a text.
Why are all the referees bald...
There's a correlation between high amounts of training and baldness, and most refs are themselves jiu-Jitsu black belts etc.
Plus male pattern baldness happens to the best of us by the time we reach our fourties.
Thx
