Perfect description. Have always thought that of him. The jazz is like a really tasty boozy cherry on top. I only discovered this side of him recently.
If there is one thing the history of jazz has taught us its that jazz will not be contained. Jazz breaks free, it expands to new territories and crashes through new barriers, painfully, maybe even dangerously, but uh, jazz finds a way.

They're in Capitol Studio A&B - they dressed it up to look like a club and brought in an audience. Same studio Sinatra used.

Man, Jeff Goldblum as jazz artist? Who would've thought my favorite quirky actors had that talent. Where have I been not to know this? And with one of my absolutely favorite Herbie Hancock compositions. I'm duly impressed.

@@GrumpyStormtrooper I kind of disagree, he wasn't virtuosic but man he played off others in their solo super well with really well timed improves chord stabs, echoing solo sections from other players.
he wasn't very note heavy. His solo wasn't a wall of notes but VERY deliberate in bringing the tastefulness of the whole thing to a head.
and god damn his chord choices were hngh, they were so on point it actually shows how much he's paid attention to harmonisation which is such a huge factor especially if you can improvise with it.

Excellent musicians - the guitarist has a great tone, in the tradition of someone like Kenny Burrell or George Benson. Jeff is playing simply but he's very tasty in his choice of notes and how he coyly lays back on the time (like a pussycat) and then suddenly pounces (like a lion) - I really enjoyed his solo. Sure, he doesn't have monster chops but he has a very focused awareness and, not surprisingly, a strong sense of drama that brings the point home (more like Duke or Monk than Bud or Herbie). This is fine music.
If you’ve never seen Jeff in the remake of ‘The Fly’ you should absolutely check it out. Apart from being a great movie he also had a scene where he plays piano and shows off a little more than in this video, still love his playing here though. He has another piano scene in ‘Earth Girls Are Easy’ but that one might be harder to find.
headknocker 2020 - I've never seen the remake of The Fly, I'm a big fan of the earlier David Cronenberg version - what a fantastic film. Actually Jeff plays a little bit of piano in that one, too - just briefly. Jeff also was in one of the only jazz films that didn't make me cringe, "Lush Life", where he very convincingly plays a tenor sax player - that's a good film and depicts the day-to-day life of a New York jazz musician, working Broadway shows, doing session work to make a living, besides playing jazz.
92ninersboy I’ll have to look that up I’ve never even heard of that one! And the cronenberg version of the fly was the one I’m talking about lol, it’s a remake of the original black and white one.
@@headknocker2020 Oh yeah, Cronenberg took "The Fly" to a whole other Cronenbergian universe than the original movie with Vincent Price that I don't even think of it as a remake. "Lush Life" is hard to find, very much for a niche audience of authentic jazzers, but I think its available as an import dvd. Well worth checking out if you're tired of sappy Hollywood takes on the jazz life.

I love Goldblum and recently in watching him I realized why? His default setting is fascination. He is always on the edge of a scientific breakthrough...about everything. If he tells you a story he doesn't even know the ending and can't wait to hear it. If he makes you a cake he can't wait to cut into it and see how it turned out. He's not stupid and I think he has got to be self aware but you'd never know it. He is along for the ride with you. It must be a fun way to live. Bonus points he is not a prick about it. He's just being himself and he is so nice. Plus everything is mack daddy screamin hot cool. 😎😉

San Eckelhöfer Actually, I saw this by a peculiar course of events-his eyeglasses. I found an article about what frames he wears (Jaqueline Marie Mage) after seeing a pair at an opticians. Cool. I recall seeing him in a show in the 70s with BenVereen called “Tenspeed and Brownshoe” and thinking he’s so gangly and the personality I saw him portray that I thought would be a great Ichabad Crane and years later he was. Now he’s a jazzman-art never stops! Happy Holidays to you too!

San Eckelhöfer Keith Jarret is amazing, especially in his vocal albums. I also think he did the best cover of Autumn leaves out there. He opened the frontiers of jazz to me leading to artists like John Coltrane and Dave Brubeck. If you like more modern jazz, I can recommend Kamasi Washington and Thundercat. There is also an amazing Brazilian electronic artist who has been blending the art of jazz with fascinating sampling techniques called ‘Amon Tobin’. His album Permutation is unlike anything Ive heard, although it’s not for everyone, but it’s worth a try.
When Jeff holds his hands in the air towards the public he is just playing with keys of our hearts.

Good God. Jeff is the perfect host. "Please sit, enjoy, I know some great musicians." Then he acts, (perhaps genuine((love of music and skill indicates this))) and joins the two. "Hey, musicians what if we got together and played some of the best classics ever. "I'll cue you"
Then lets them blossom and do their thing. Then the audience experiences nothing like it ever again. Genius.

Eh personally I felt that cutting to Goldblum every .075 seconds took a little bit away from the others, but it’s still a very talented ensemble. Kudos to all involved.
Disagree. This video strikes a thoughtful balance between the attraction of star power and the generosity of that star when working within a talented ensemble.
The visuals predominantly feature Mr. Goldblum because he’s the front man that is driving the clicks. The casual viewer primarily wants to see him and everyone involved in the production recognizes that fact. And c’mon - Goldblum’s facial expressions are an enjoyable lead performance in their own right!! But instead of mere showboating they serve to visually recognize and interact with all the various solos and fills of all his bandmates. In these reactions to what we are all hearing, Goldblum becomes a silent master of ceremonies who repeatedly deflects the focus back to the musicians if one is actively listening more than just passively watching. And for the music itself he humbly takes a back seat in the overall sound mix and arrangement. Without going back and counting, it seemed like he only took a single 8-bar pass for his solo and then stepped back out the way again. You can’t please all of the people - but Goldblum, the band, and the producers have crafted a very tasty treat that will greatly please the other 99%.

I am not sure Jeff played a single major triad in his whole solo... there was all this dissonant stuff and maybe the tri tone here and there- what he do do... resolve to a minor chord! but wow did he pull it off. Jeff was fun to watch and is QUITE multi talented, such a fan! I always love to see a group of musicians that can come together and communicate the way these folks did. Absolute magic. :)

Been listening to Jeff and his various bands playing jazz in Hollywood and other L.A. nightspots for decades. This isn’t some new thing. I remember hearing Peter “robocop” Weller playing trumpet in Jeff’s band and these cats could play! So glad he’s still on it and with some excellent players. They should all have been named in the video notes. Kind of insulting they weren’t.
