Vinícius Idalgo Becegato James is god awful at video games. If a game can't be won by standing in place and button mashing an all out offensive attack, he can't beat it.
Wow, the memories of this game must have been lost in the recesses of my mind, but seeing you playing brought it all back. Even the cover made me remember of those fridays when you could rent 2 games and return on monday. Good memories.
This game is actually a tie in to the 1990 Japanese movie Zipang (which also the PC-Engine version of Solomon's Key is based on) and the game is named Jigoku Gokuraku Maru in Japan. The game is developed by Human Enterainment and Human Creative Group (now Spike).
Even things like the hair as a weapon are more from this performance style than any specific 'character' that people keep citing. It's somewhere between a running gag and long-standing lore.
Yeah, try to watch it on youtube it's really amazing and most of them are translate. And if you drop by japan go see it in live it's even more amazing ;)
Shmandalf if just one person discover the kabuki and enjoy it, it will be mission accomplished. Nobody criticized James or Mike, it is just a lil precision
Yo, dudes. You can exchange chips for life when paused. If I remember correctly it's just by pressing up and down. You def would have cleared that last boss if you traded chips for more life.
Man, I remember playing this at my friend's house. It was one of those great hidden gems that no one seemed to play growing up. We rented it 2 or 3 times from Main Street Video, Bellevue, NE.
I had this game when i was a kid and i still have it to this day, one of my favorite games on the NES, the gameplay is fun and the music kicks ass. When you pause the game you are able to turn chips into health and health into chips (pending on if you want more ammo for a weapon or not)
@Mike I usually don't comment on RUclips videos but as you were fighting cyber Audrey I was laughing my butt off because I felt your pain. It brought back those memories of when I was a kid playing games like Batman and Ninja turtles, and my nerves and adrenaline was pumping so much that I would have to turn my baseball cap around and when I did that I wasn't messing around anymore
The Matrix way before the Matrix, LOVE this game!! I played this game for most of my life, it has great gameplay, awesome special abilities, an hp/mp swap function (during boss fights, when you press pause, you can swap your chips for HP and vice versa), cool special effects, awesome difficulty and a perfect f*cking soundtrack!! The Stage 5 track is just absolute perfection!
I've finished this game insane amount of times. I absolutely loved it as a kid...good old times :) I love how they kept using basic spell when you get upgraded versions after each level :D
I used to have this game when I was a child!! My mom bought it used from blockbuster for Christmas. This game was fun but hard! Great video James and Mike!!
yes!!!! I totally remember this game but forgot the title!!! I remember he makes this "yuuuuuu" noise. Is it when he uses his hair? it's a grunt you will never forget xD. Yes Crystalis is amazing I still own it!!!! lol out of chips... I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH!!! I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH!!! James Beat him with one health life!!! whos yo boi?!?!?!
what's up James and Mike? after I saw this video a couple of weeks ago I ordered a copy of this game. I just got and so far it's really fun. I like the style because it reminds me of batman, and the flipping around and grabbing on to walls definitely reminds me of ninja gaiden. I was the one who was pestering you to play Castlevania 3 and you finally did which was awesome btw :)
Mike: "The controls are really good. The jumping mechanics are really good. I like being able to jump off of stuff. I think it's kinda neat how you can hit things with your hair. It's kinda unique." Mike, good sir, you have just described Shantae, one of the few 2D platformer franchises that isn't dead in our modern age of gaming. It's definitely a series worth checking out.
You can trade chips for health and vice versa when you pause, like in Astynax. Also, I believe with each boss you destroy you get a special weapon in your inventory to use. Try using the dynamite on the last boss you guys were fighting when it's on the ceiling.
I remember this game, as a kid hardly passed through the level where guys ended - that spider robot was really hard! I hadn't remember how cool that game was! :D
I cant believe they played Gun.Smoke and Quantum Fighter recently. Those are my favorite 2 nes games from my childhood. I think I've even recommended them both on this channel's comments before. Such good games! EDIT: I never beat either game. =)
Crystalis is fantastic! I played it and beat it as a kid, and found it to be on par with Zelda as an adventure game. Mike, you would love it. James too, but I feel that Mike would frikkin love it.
Mike, let me increase your enjoyment of this game: you can give lower and raise the health bar by adding or subtracting chips by pressing up and down on i think it's the pause screen.
Mike: try to use the chips sparingly
James: *uses all of them at once*
"Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me!"
lmao yes
nobel 11 RAGE
Vinícius Idalgo Becegato James is god awful at video games. If a game can't be won by standing in place and button mashing an all out offensive attack, he can't beat it.
Very true. Although he isn't too bad at platformers
Wow, the memories of this game must have been lost in the recesses of my mind, but seeing you playing brought it all back. Even the cover made me remember of those fridays when you could rent 2 games and return on monday. Good memories.
Great game that doesn't get talked about much. The music is also legit.
Never heard of it but looks fun. Reminds me of Batman.
Hurricane Glorndorsorn ...as you fuck?
This game is underrated as shit. Glad you guys gave it some spotlight.
This game is actually a tie in to the 1990 Japanese movie Zipang (which also the PC-Engine version of Solomon's Key is based on) and the game is named Jigoku Gokuraku Maru in Japan. The game is developed by Human Enterainment and Human Creative Group (now Spike).
One of my favorite games of all time. The art style is out of this world for the NES days and the action is super crisp.
This was actually my favorite nes game of all time. Glad to see it get some love!
During the boss fight, you can change your chips to life and vice versa.
Kabuki is more a japanese theatre rather than a dance.
Yeah, it's kind of like ballet. It's dancing; acting; and music.
He is kabuki man. You are semantics man.
Shmandalf if just one person discover the kabuki and enjoy it, it will be mission accomplished. Nobody criticized James or Mike, it is just a lil precision
The Kabuki hair makes me want to replay Revenge of Shinobi.
"People who don't play video games are probably fucking shit." MFM, 2017
Quote of the century!
Jonathan Harrold kind of want that whole segment animated.
Aaron Basham same XD. And a t-shirt made too
I don't think they realized how funny that was! LMAO!!!
Jonathan Harrold y
that was a childhood game that I played and fell in love with it, but could not beat it, thanks for the awesome video and memories!!
I remember renting this game with my friend when i was 10 or 11. Awesome nostalgia moment, thanks guys.
Can you give Capcoms, Little Nemo a shot?? I used to play the shit outta that one.
Yo, dudes. You can exchange chips for life when paused. If I remember correctly it's just by pressing up and down. You def would have cleared that last boss if you traded chips for more life.
Finally this gem gets some love. It's criminal how underated this game was.
Underrated classic for the NES.
Yeah, it is.
Man, I remember playing this at my friend's house. It was one of those great hidden gems that no one seemed to play growing up. We rented it 2 or 3 times from Main Street Video, Bellevue, NE.

Kabuki is not a dance, it's a from of theatre
Kabuki is my favorite from of theatre
I hope James still enjoys doing these videos. I got the impression that he was a bit bored in the beginning, but he seemed more into it at the end :-)
This was my favorite game back in the day. I beat it so many times.
Journey To Silius!!! Awesome game and I'd love to see you beat that
Holy fuck! One of if not my favorite NES games
I fucking love this game. Had as a kid, still have it now.
YES!! One of my favorite NES Games!!
@Mike I usually don't comment on RUclips videos but as you were fighting cyber Audrey I was laughing my butt off because I felt your pain. Kevin Painter like Lincoln Hawk does in the 1987, arm wrestling movie "Over The Top" starring Sylvester Stallone.
The beginning of this episode, when Mike says what game they are gonna play, and James is looking at it. Awwwwwwwww that face!
He's not a kabuki, he's a metalhead!
This game was most definitely the inspiration for the Shantae series.
Evan Lefavor . Thank you God
Head Banging Bouncing Pixelated Breast Simulator! :)
Yup, this is the origin of the Hair Whipping Technique
Yeah Shantae!
I'm kind of sad Mike and James don't know about Shantae, or haven't mentioned it in the video.
I remember wanting to play this as a kid after reading the glowing review EGM gave it.
Thanks for the shout out Mike....well not really but i do say play Crystalis in every one of your streams.
I had this game. You should read the game story while it plays that music..... total dystopian horror. Like T2
The character’s name is even “Scott O’CONNOR”
YESSSSS! Do Crystalis! It's my favorite NES game. One of the few I have complete in box!
recently bought this one - after watching Mike play it - its a really good game, yeah.
w00dyblack matinee....yeah
Who do s stuffs with you on games i like hangbang games i teach and tell of a fight at my blog you see it here?
Me too :-)
Great music good gameplay
And lots of fun!
its a cheap game too - recommended.
I've finished this game insane amount of times. I absolutely loved it as a kid...good old times :)
I love how they kept using basic spell when you get upgraded versions after each level :D
Congrats on the birth of your second daughter James!!
James Beat him with one health life!!! whos yo boi?!?!?!
you should play faxanadu!
I too have been leaving this same comment in dozens of their videos lol but srsly they really should play that. Such a cool game
I had this one when I was a kid. One of the latest games for the nes.
I've sent that "live like a windrammer" video to A LOT of my coworkers. The legacy lives on, James, don't even doubt it.
Video games are art in form of Storytelling, Musical Composition, Graphical Design and maybe hundred other things.
what's up James and Mike? after I saw this video a couple of weeks ago I ordered a copy of this game. I just got and so far it's really fun. I was the one who was pestering you to play Castlevania 3 and you finally did which was awesome btw :)
I love this game! Feels great to see them play it.
thanks for this! ill have to snag this one. love you guys, keep being awesome!
I love the music in this game.
Do journey to silius!
Amazing game and the music is phenomenal.
This game was one of my last NES games. It was awesome
It wasn't developed by HAL, they published it. It was made by Human Entertainment who also made Monster Party. Which makes a lot more sense.
Mike is apparently channeling Bronson Pinchot a lot today.
Wasn't this game heavily featured on Video Power? I remember this and RoboCop on every show.
Good game, been waiting for this one!
Always liked this game. We had an old multicart with this on it.
Had this game back in the day. Loved it, played it all the time but never beat it.
I remember playing this game and i was way too hard for me when i was a kid, i would love to play it again.
Literally the best Kabuki-themed platformer on the NES. MAN i fucking loved this game.
I remember this game back in the days
I'm surprised Shantae wasn't mentioned when the hair thing came up.
Boomers don’t know what that is.
@@Dinosaurprince :(
Shantae has become one of my favourite franchises in recent times. Who knew it had an "ancestor" ?
You can trade chips for health and vice versa when you pause, like in Astynax. Also, I believe with each boss you destroy you get a special weapon in your inventory to use. Try using the dynamite on the last boss you guys were fighting when it's on the ceiling.
I remember this game, as a kid hardly passed through the level where guys ended - that spider robot was really hard! I hadn't remember how cool that game was! :D
Metal Storm would be a cool game to review. It really should have gotten a sequel.
Kabuki is not a dance but a special form of theatre.
I finished this game back in the day, pretty awesome stuff
Everyone else is talking about Shantae, and here I am thinking "Using your hair as a weapon, kind of like Bayonetta".
I like this game a lot played it so much when i was a kid realy amazing game and relay cheap too
You can also pause and press up or down to exchange hp and chips, at least at bosses once per boss
Video games are most certainly art. It's undeniable.
this was my faforite game as a kid! love it and the music is awesome!
(you can swap your chips for health and health for chips...)
(pauze the game (start) and press up or down)
Holy shit, I had this game. I forgot it existed. I love this show.
Im so glad you guys made a sgt. kabukiman joke...I was gonna be disappointed if you didnt
Google Cinemassacre mailbag episode 4 for those who don't get the reference. You'll laugh hard as shit.
yo that flip animation is siiiiick
Video games encompass many different art styles, like music and graphics, with the added difficulty of incorporating fun interactivity.
I passed on this one quite a few times at the local rental store growing up. Looks decent. Guess, I need to try it out.
Used to fucking love this game!
If James seems a little odd in this video, it's because he just had his second daughter.
snouse this video was probably recorded months ago - he just had his daughter like three days ago 😂
Chris Calvert I'm unsure of how the recording process works. If that's the case, then James is acting kind of off for another reason.
snouse mike actually commented on someone's post on here, confirming these are recorded months in advance. He's probably just not feeling it.
Chris Calvert I see. Thanks!
I met someone that knew him, he said James is very likable man but is a very quiet.
This game looks just great, it's like an 8-bit Shantae Half Genie Hero precursor.
I cant believe they played Gun.Smoke and Quantum Fighter recently. Those are my favorite 2 nes games from my childhood. I think I've even recommended them both on this channel's comments before. Such good games!
EDIT: I never beat either game. =)
I look forward to the inevitable video of Mike beating this.
Great video as usual but why are there almost no game volume?
I played this game way back when. Can't remember whether I beat it or not.
I love this game! took me a while to beat it but it's definitely one of my favorites!
This is a great game, just played it again last night!
Mike: "Oh, no...oh, NO!"
Kool-Man, after busting through the wall: "OH, YEAH!!!"
"Try to use them a bit sparingly"as James eats up the whole bag of chips
Any chance you guys will ever play Aero Fighters on SNES? Two-Player co-op flying-shooter game, highly recommended.
Crystalis is fantastic! I played it and beat it as a kid, and found it to be on par with Zelda as an adventure game. Mike, you would love it. James too, but I feel that Mike would frikkin love it.
This game is fucking tits! Can't believe you're playing it, the memories are flooding back.
Mike, let me increase your enjoyment of this game: you can give lower and raise the health bar by adding or subtracting chips by pressing up and down on i think it's the pause screen.
That's exactly the move (the hair whip) that Sindel in Mortal Kombat does!
There is also Kabuki: Mystical Ninja for the Genesis which is a decent beat em up!
I might have to try this out myself sometime today
Yes, please do Metal Storm....one of my top 3 favorite NES titles!!
There are more than one special weapons you can use. In the final stage you can even convert your hp and energy.
One of my personal favorites :D
I had both Crystalis and journey to silius. Great two games.
what was the video with the funny messages titled?
It's called "Cinemassacre Mailbag Ep 3". Just search it and you'll find.
DanielFlores5555 thanks man
I just did a write up on this game last week for a Destructoid blog. what a coincidence!
