    Great job on the photos Phil. 4:13 was my fav with nice creamy bokeh background. Thanks for sharing the garden there 👍🙏

    Great shots! It's a good reminder to change the aperture around for different types of shots.

    Flies are part of the Lauxaniidae family of flies. (at least that is what I think they are.). Cool insects and macro shots today. Thanks for sharing. I was shooting some flowers with that same setup yesterday and everything was soft. Oops, somehow the lock button had been switched to off and the SA ring was moved a little. That's a watch out for this lens the SA ring is intended to create a soft focus look (guess for portraits?) and it sure did. If images ever look soft, check to be sure that ring is in the center and locked position

      I wish they made a version of the RF 100 macro without the SA ring for a better price. I never unlock that thing. I'll try to remember to add "check SA lock switch" to my pre-shoot regimen, Thank you!

    I'm gutting my backyard landscape to switch to native Texas plants, hoping to attract a greater variety of birds. But surprise! After getting only 6 plants installed a dozen butterflies and numerous insects came to inspect the blooms. My seldom used RF 100 Macro going to get a workout. Thanks for the motivation and great shots.

    Very nice pics, just a quick question. Are you manual focusing your shots? I have the same setup and went out today but used only f5.6 and they all came back soft.

      It has been about 11 months since I made this video. Usually I do macro flower photos in June but if memory serves, I probably used auto focus unless I was at more than 1 to 1 macro. Auto focus doesn’t work very good when you get that close but most of these shots are just of Flowers so auto focus works fine. You will want to use single point and put that point on exactly the place that you want to be in focus.

    I agree that the wide aperture flowers look great, and f10 seems to work really well for insects. When I photograph insects, I mostly use f8 because I have been worried about softness due to diffraction, but your photos look great. Thanks Phil, I look forward to being a bit braver and trying both soon based on your experience.

    • @PhilThach
      @PhilThach  Год назад

      There is not a lot to it, I use Lightroom and move some sliders around until it looks nice, and then I run the image through Topaz Denoise AI to take advantage of that program’s excellent sharpening.

    Love the photo's Phil. I know that the 100 mm f/2.8 is designed for macro but have you tried anything with the 85 f/1.8,1.4,1.2 for comparison? The black ant on a green leaf was my favorite.

      Thank you! I haven’t used any of the 85mm lenses for macro. Maybe one day I will.

    I dont have the 100 macro lens-- maybe some day-- I have been using my RF 100-500 and then cropping for what I call close up shots. I also use my older ef 70-200 F2.8 for that purpose.

    • @PhilThach

      I agree! The 100-500 works great for mild macro. I made a couple photos of some wildflowers that I found at the Sebastian Inlet when Heather and I were there earlier this week making bird photos.

    Hi Phil - what is the model of flash on your R7 at the 1:26 mark? Would also be interested to know more about the diffuser. Thanks

      @PhilThach  10 месяцев назад

      Hi. It’s a Meike mk-330. The diffuser is made by an Australian company called crafty bells, which has gone out of business.

    Good stuff, Phil. The RF 100mm f/2.8 is an amazing lens. But . . . have you done any macro-style work with your RF 100-500? It works great when you happen to be on a trail without your traditional macro lens. Sometimes, with especially skittish or hazardous subjects, I prefer it over the 100mm.

    • @PhilThach
      @PhilThach  Год назад +1

      Thank you! I have used the 100-500 for mild macro, it works great but the budget 100-400 works slightly better. However, I'm more likely to be carrying the 100-500.

    Any tips for maximizing depth of field while taking shots with otherwise similar composition

      @PhilThach  3 месяца назад

      @@FieldLing639 you could focus stacking but it’ll be tricky. it’s a good thing. I like the one flower in focus look lol

      @@PhilThach Thanks! I love the look too, but a lot of my shots will double for IDing purposes, so including other plant parts like leaves and stems etc. in flower (or whatever part I’m shooting) shots helps a lot, as does having the leaf or flower an insect is on, as that’s often important to host plant / pollination information. I also don’t mind having a super deep depth of field artistically either, feels less like clutter and more context to me
      (Love your videos by the way, makes the hobby feel approachable)

      @@PhilThach An important question to take into account, I think that the manufacturers are not aware of the importance that some people give to that possibility. A hug, Phil, and thanks for your time!
