Canon RF 100mm on the Canon R7 - not a lens for me. I prefer the focus of my adapted EFL 100mm f/2.8

    Impressive pictures! I own and use both 100mm, the EF and the RF version. Until now I had no issuses with the reported focus-shift. I like the RF version more because of the more rugged construction. Keep on your amazing work!😊

      Thank you. I have heard from some that have had the shift and others that have not. No big deal - I love me EF version..... and the Laowa too. That one is super sharp. I have to say the old EF L lens are pretty rugged. I have dropped and they keep on going!! Heart wrenching when i happens though. 🙏🤗❤

    I love my RF 100. It is focus by wire so I can see how if you manually focus only it might be tricky. I don't see any focus shift at all. You made several beautiful images.

      Trevor, I am glad it works for you. I prefer my old EF version - it works better for me. I shoot in both manual focus and auto focus and the throw on the old EF feels shorter - same with the Laowa. As an apo lens, the Laowa is more demanding and that focus ring works better for me. If I were shooting portraits, it might be a great lens, but I would not shoot those with a 100mm. I wouldn't shoot an event with a 100mm either. I found the auto focus FOR ME, and using it as a macro lens, to be spotty and problematic. Shooting with that lens for two days, I was surprised at how little I was happy with and how little I kept. If you see reviews about the back focus, I had it all over the place even in manual focus that should have been pin sharp per the zoom and peaking. Glad it works for you - it could have just been the copy I had that was a problem. Thank you Trevor!! 💖🤗🙏

    sorry but the RF is a lot sharper and faster than the EF...the only thing that I don't like about this lens is the SA ring.....waste of money ..I don't know what canon was thinking...or maybe they were not thinking!

      MrDvaz!!!! No worries - that is one thing I really love about photography, art, music, cycling..... We all have preferences and things that work for our own style. I did not like the SA ring either. I will rent that lens again at some point and try it again, but it is rare for me to not to like a lens right off. Many like it, many don't. For me right now, the EF version works amazingly well and so does the EF version of the Laowa 100 2/1 for macro. Thank you, thank you MrDvaz!!! 🤗🙏💖

      Kevin!!! I have heard that some have had that issue and others have not and the LOVE the RF version. I am glad you are enjoying it. As far as the diffuser, it is something cheap from Amazon and a cheap reflector on top - also from Amazon. It is small so it does not push stuff out of the way like others I have tried. These are some Amazon links - cheap stuff that just works. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07VHPSGJX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1 www.amazon.com/gp/product/B018SAW9UM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    • @JonnyPink65
      @JonnyPink65  2 года назад +1

      Rui 777!!! What I have noticed is a dramatic difference depending on the lens and aperture. And what I mean by that is, F5.6 on the RF 100-400 is WAY darker than the base F6.3 at 600 on the Sigma contemporary lens. I have also motived that I do not like the images at over about 500 ISO - like an older DLSR. Great camera and since what I really got it was macro at an ISO of 200, it works well. I shoot anywhere between F9 and F13 with no problems. And...... I crop!!! 🙏🤗💖

    I have this lens and the rf100-400mm. The longer lens can focus down to 3 ft distance and comfortably fill the frame with insects and dragonflies and butterflies. I often don't even need the macro lens to get beautiful close-ups. I will use the rf100mm mostly for extreme Macro like bugs faces.

LOL I am having such a fun time renting lenses - too much fun. Today and yesterday I was out with my old original version (I bought it well used) of the EF 100-400 - it was a thinking lens and I had a blast. This weekend, I will be out with the RD 100-400 that several have asked me about - looking forward to that. And yeah, riding a little less and not filming that. I rush home to grab my camera. Kevin!!! I did not like the EF 100-400 on my R5 but wanted to have fun with this old lens so that I had a comparison to the RF 100-400 that I have been shooting for the last two days. I have to say that am impressed with how it performed on the R7. Still working on my opinion of the RF version. 😊 But is is all subjective. The slower focus really worked well for the dragonflies in flight. And if that is all I use it for, it makes me happy. I was going to trade it in and not gonna do that now. I loved it. Thank you Kevin!! 🤗💖🙏

    Jonny Pink! What's up man! You don't like the RF? Wow. I have all three lenses and it is hard to tell, the way I shoot, between the RF and the EF. Of course, you can get to 1.4x with the RF and it is super sharp and probably a little faster for AF than the EF. Of course, I always use AF on either of those lenses and just don't bother with MF. I only ever shoot at F11 on either lens. As for the 2X Loawa, well, I'm disappointed in Venus on that lens. On my R5, it only works correct in crop mode. I haven't tried it on the R7, though I may before I decide to sell it off. I can get to 2X easily on the RF by just putting 2 extension tubes on it and I have the MP-E 65, if I need more. I may eventually sell off the EF 100mm f2.8L too. Good luck.

    • @JonnyPink65
      @JonnyPink65  2 года назад

      Anthony!!!! I like the RF, but prefer the EF and the Loawa over the RF. It could be that I am more used to those lenses, but I am use to coming home with hundreds of photos and then narrowing it down. After shooting with the RF in both manual and autofocus, I still did not have as many as I had after shooting a couple hours with the other lenses. It could be me. For me the Laowa works great on my R5. We all have preferences that work for us - that is the amazing thing about the art of photography - we all see things slightly different and it is AWESOME!!!! Thank you Anthony. PS - I LOVE the RF 100-500 and will get that soon for distance macro. 🙏💖🤗

    Have you tried the R7's focus bracketing? I set it at about 10-16 shots and one step shorter than the standard spacing. I'm easily able to get entire insects or dragonflies in focus. I start by focusing on a small spot just in front of the insect and the autofocus focus bracketing moves all the way across it and onto the leaf behind. I like front and rear background bokeh but having the entire bug in focus is nice also. I would imagine most of the good macro lenses would accomplish this bracketing very well. The focus bracketing feature in the R6 and R7 for me make manual focusing unnecessary and obsolete. Even if I don't use the focus bracket I have a dozen or more choices of a slightly deeper focus plane position that is in a different spot in each bracket image. Easy to pick the best one. Much easier than manually focusing exactly where you want it each time.

    • @JonnyPink65
      @JonnyPink65  2 года назад +1

      Forrest!!! I have not used focus bracketing in a long time. A lot of macro shooter do that by slightly rocking and then focus stacking. It is a FANTASTIC method and I might try it again to pick the best one since the cameras shoot so fast these days. I am a purest or old fashioned - I like one pictures with the focus fall away. Thank you for that though, I will try that. The focus on this is so amazing as it is!!! 🤗🙏💖

      Thank you Bill!!! Yeah, I am really happy with the EF version as well. Manually, I can instantly find focus either using the zoom on the button I have set for that, or focus peaking. For ME, even when I used that method with the RF, the focus was off or shifted. I can say that is a lens I will not be buying. The Laowa and the EF give me all I want. I was so unhappy with the RF shots that I hardly had enough to put in the video. When I stopped showing them, I was out. I have at least 20 of each of the other lenses that never made it into the video due to time. Where I normally pull two or three, then process one, I had almost none with the RF that were what I wanted. Thank you Bill!! By the way, the old EF 100-400 works really well on the R7 as well. I have r7 and rf 100mm macro lens. I can't take the photos I want or I can't.. I can't adjust the focal width. it is very narrow. Is this because of the aps-c sensor?

    • @JonnyPink65
      @JonnyPink65  Год назад +1

      Well if you are taking macro photos, then yes. When you are super close to a subject for macro F11 is a good place to start. Although it seems like F/2.8 would let in more light, the small focal plain becomes almost useless..... for macro Slow shutter speed and a low ISO with a flash freezes the motion. Many also stack images if they can get more than one, but for me - I am a purest and like to just take one shot and present the best one I have. F/11, shutter speed of 1/160th and adjust your flash. Use a diffuser and it will get you in the ball park. The AF on the R7 is awesome so I use that a lot, but I also use manual focus using peaking too. I hope this helps! 🙏🤗❤

However, after reviewing on my MacBook I was sooo disappointed to see such soft focus pics with not much in focus, or just too soft for me.
