The two points you mentioned at the end of the video which is, the difference between old and new chain. That's great. ❤️👌👌👌 I was not aware of it till now.
I have put this argument to rest in the past. I took a brand new chain and used calipers to measure the side plates. I then took measurements throughout the life of the chain and at the end of it's life I did find the in fact the side plates had stretched. Now the percentage of the overall gain in length from the side plates was a small amount. Most of the length gain was pin wear. In this video you can clearly see where I show the pin being sloppy.
A very good presentation. Stretch is a perfectly fine word for the complete assembly of a bike chain. The elements of the chain wear (pins, link holes, etc) and collectively the full assembly gets longer under tension. He didn't say the link stretches. He said as the links wear the chain as a complete system stretches. A rubber band *stretches* , but the atoms don't get bigger then little. The atoms in the compound get pulled further apart as the strong nuclear forces weaken.
the chains don't actually stretch. that's not what's going on. what happens is the holes that the pins go through over time wear out as material is removed from the parts grinding against each other. look at the holes of the old chain and compare to the new one. the old will be bigger and no longer perfectly round
i wasn't know the difference the old chain and the new one. i would wait for the mechanics advise for thinking about a change. thanks for this helpful video.
You can settle this issue easily: measure, to the thousandths, the length of a link on a brand new chain. Use the chain until its "worn out." Measure the length of a link again. If its longer than when new, it stretched. If it is the same, the total length of the chain is longer because the pins are worn out, creating play between each link.
This is my first video I've watched on chain replacement but I already see an issue with the term "stretch". When you showed the place between 2 links, that's worn away and not stretched. I'm not good at match but If each link wore away by event 0.03125" (1/32"), that would add up very fast more so than if it was stretching. The only way to determine if the chain did in fact stretch is to close the gap between each link of the old chain. By laying them down in the same manner will not close the gaps. Good video either way. I did learn a great deal. Thanks!
If you change chain size you also need to use sprockets that work with that size. A good 520 chain can last if you regularly clean and lube it with good chain lube. You would be better off spending the money on good sprockets and a good X ring chain in a 520 size. I always pack a small can of lube when I do a long ride and lube the chain each night especially if you are riding in rain, dirt or high temps.
stretch is a bad word nothing has stretched its the pins and barles that wear and that were compounds giveing that word "stretch" my Yamaha manual says count a number of links lets say 15 and measure that length if over the specified length then its to worn needs to be replaced
Whether its pin wear, or link stretch, it's still making the chain longer & loser, or with tight spots, and the chain ends up being no good, as your saying. BTW where do you find that new chain at ? Good work. Thanks. yl
Greets from texas, if you lived near here I would buy you beer or something for the info.. Appreciate you taking out the time in your day for these vids
Sorry but your wrong, chains don't physically "stretch" they get longer from pin wear, If you measure the length of the chain plates, compare old and new, you will find they are the same length. The pins in the chain are wearing thinner from use resulting in the pin links being able move away from the roller links longitudinal giving the illusion of stretch. The pin link pitch remains the same and the roller link pitch remains the same which means the side plate length hasn't changed/stretched but the distance between the pin link and the roller link becomes variable due to the increased free play between the pin inside the roller link as the pin gets thinner, this is what increases the length of the chain. the noise you hear in the video when the old chain is shook is caused by the worn pin moving inside the roller link.
i put the bike on the stand today to inspect tension and as i turned the wheel i noticed that half was tight and half was loose. think is time to replace it?
i dont think it actually stretched I just think every pin that hold the links together gets worn out. making them thiner allowing more play making it look longer
Stretch is just a lazy word for "elongation". The chain does not stretch, it wears out and becomes longer so everyone says it stretched. It becomes longer from wear. All chains wear, some more than others.
pkitup1 Think of it logically, The only thing on a chain link that could stretch would be its side plates but chain research focuses on pin protection not its side plates, there's a reason for this, plates don't stretch. The research that does go into the side plates is to make them smaller, lighter and thinner, now would you do this if you had a stretching problem, I think not, you would make them bigger, thicker and tougher.
That old chain is worn out! A whole link longer half way along! Could you use the amount of 'droop' to measure/compare chain wear? Hold one end of the chain in a vice (with the pins vertical) and see how much curvature or droop occurs over the length of the chain. Compare this with a new chain.
hi, very nice video and way of explanation. i need a suggestion i have a new chain and set of sprockets roughly 1500 miles driven. some how the guy whom i bought the bike with tightened the chain over specs and in recent lubing i saw one link is stuck damn tight cannot move it at all. can i keep using the chain as its only one link or shall i change it and if i, shall i really change the sprockets also i just wonder as they were not driven allot and feel relatively new and i cannot find any wear on the teaths also. is there any way to fix the existing chain today?
First, you should change the chain. If the chain fails at speed it can get wrapped up in the rear tire and cause it to lock up. Not changing the sprockets will cause the new chain to wear faster but that's all.
@@NWAdventureRider thanks allot for quick response but sprockets are relatively new and seem like wear free, would they still harm the new chain? if yes then i guess i shall loose the pocket and get the complete kit sadly :(
Hi NW Adventure Rider, I would like to ask you, I have a Kawasaki versys 650 2011 model. I have just did a trip from Malaysia to North of Thailand n Golden Triangle . It took me 7 days and about 4500 km go and back to Malaysia. I had problem with my chain , Its sound very hard and uncomfortable for me. Now i have a bad chain. The size of my chain im using is 520 im wondering if i change to size 525 or 530 can help my chain and spocket last longer a long trip.
You didn’t prove that the chain stretched. You did prove that the pins wear and have slack. That’s the reason a chain seems longer. I guess the true way to tell is to use a micrometer and measure a new and used link. Same style chain of course
Hey I got the same exact bike and year. It starts first or second kick and rides like new, looks like new. I ride it a lot too. Usually once a week for about 2 hours.
chains do not stretch, they merely lengthen from the culmination of individual pin/roller interacting wear,,,,,measure the pith of the first and last link, they will be the same on new and old chain respectively,
Everyone knows. Yet we all still refer to our chains as stretching but thanks for stating the obvious. From now on I will tell my buddies my chain has lengthened due to the culmination of individual pin roller interaction . Lol
seriously I was not being facetious, ive had so many arguments over this issue, 90% of people really think chains stretch, ive worked in the mining industry as an engineer and never come across a stretched chain in the pit or on my bike, im sorry if I stretched your chain a little bit mate, lol
This... a modern chain shouldn't yield, the extra length or "stretch" is from wear. Always buy from a reputable brand (any of the japanese made chains will be good shtuff, goes for motorbikes and heavy equipment alike)
i am watching this cause my chain is fucked on my 650 L,, just getting ideas , i am goping to clean , lube , then see how bad it is christmas put me in the poor haus

My old chain on my V Strom 650 is doing exactly what you said , time to replace thax !

Should have read some comments. They say the same as what I just did.
Thank, very useful since I need to service my chain on a Honda XR 200.
Interesting video, Thanks. Have you encountered stiff links in a chain? or maybe an inflexible link and how to loosen?

Good tangible examples NW,
mythbustin that chain lol
My chain is showing signs of moving side to side...about 2 mm on each side...tension is ok....time to change it?

Great job
ok thank you for your help and information

The steel itself doesn't actually stretch, the pins just wear into the inside of the bushings. Good video

The renthal chain is way better than the other one man, it makes a rattle noise because it clearly has no lubrication at all in the video
+Street Legal Customs It was also missing about 1/2 of it O-Rings. It had no lube because I cleaned it.

how has the new chain lasted
I believe chains stretch but the difference in link alignment between new and old chain can be the worn out rollers Just saying

I don't know. It was still like new when I sold the bike about 3 months ago.

no, its not only a pin play buisness, the metal plates (the 8 shaped pieces) literally stretch
I bought a bike off a guy on Craigslist (yz250f '05) and all the orings are cracked. Prob time I replace it right? Lol
