DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth. Now Popular does not mean official even though two of the formats I will be covering were official formats being Japan Nintendo Cup and VGC, but it is an indicator of what a good portion of competitive players thought was “optimal” at the time. Also sometimes the Pokemon Battle Historia doesn't provide enough information to talk about certain Pokemon so I add Smogon analysis to make sense of it. This is pretty rare though.
To the people asking why I don't cover Smogon Singles for Gens 1 and 2: It wouldn't really be a history video if I covered those because online Smogon gen 1 meta to my knowledge wasn't actually played until late 2000s. I wanted to cover tournaments/competitive battling that was actually played during the early years of Pokemon (late 90s).
To the people asking why I cover Smogon at all for singles: To my knowledge, Smogon was the most popular format for Gens 3-5 and held a number of tournaments throughout the years. As for Gen 6, I am not covering Battle Spot Singles because there is more information and explanations about sets being used relative to their own meta on Smogon. In other words, there are few written analyses about Battle Spot Pokemon besides the Top tiers and I would like to avoid theorycrafting because it may have a hint of bias (though I theorycraft if I REALLY couldn't find information on a certain Pokemon). The keyword here is explanations. Though I did find statistics of most Pokemon used and most moves used, there wasn't really any explanations on why. Also the few Pokemon I did find analysis of for Top Tier Battle Spot Singles had very similar move sets to the Smogon OU sets anyway.
For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent and I will not fault you for using evasion or whatever, I just like examining popular tournament formats.

Mawile has always been one of my favorites, I loved the design and when I played the 3rd gen for the first time I caught one and trained it all the way to the league because I wantet to see its evolution XD

Mawile is the best example of how Mega Evolution should work
InsteadCDC of putting 50 points in attack and 50 in attack and making your pokemon still frail or slow and making one still superior to the other.
I'd rather give it a normal evolution.

Fun Fact : Mawile with Air Balloon is nightmare for Cynthia's Garchomp.
Garchomp's moves are *Swords dance , Poison Jab , Earthquake and Dragon claw* and Mawile is immune to all of this when holding an air balloon.

Mawile is in my opinion a VERY underrated Pokémon, not competitively, but in general. It’s a perfect blend of weird, cool, & cute all at once, & it’s Mega Evolution is even cooler.
She was my go to steel type for gen 3, if I could catch it, I would.

Mawile just wanted to bite harder. So by the end of gen 5, it thought "why not have bigger jaws, or even two of them!?"
This severe miscalculation has resulted in many Pokémon being ripped apart, broken, or wondering if their defenses got nerfed. But Mawile doesn't care. It got to taste Ubers, something only so many Pokémon can dream of.
That said, I like both its non mega and mega designs. It constantly made me sad that I never had Ruby, but recruiting it in PMD: Darkness/Sky was a close enough alternative until I could finally own one for myself.

people still use some stockpile variants of it online but not on official tournaments cauz it is not good enough to seriously do sth without its mega like Camerupt and Ampharos. But even that isnt comparable cauz mega Ampharos/Camerupt came from nearly useless to RU/NUBL good and Mawile came from nearly useless to a banworthy opponent in Ubers good.
@@oles9196 To their credit Ampharos and Camerupt atleast where an option in their original tier before megas. Mawhile didn't even have that.

Even when i hate mega-evolution (long story don't ask) what happend to mawile is sad, wish she had something else, like a ability change, a gigamax or a simple stat incresase
Mega Mawile is in my opinion one of the best Mega designs out there and i think thats how megas should have been done, instead of already good pokemon like Salamance or Metagross, give it to weak Pokemon, like Mawile or Ampharos to make them better.
Ampharos-Mega still isn't that good tho. And that's a shame, because he's so cool

Salamence and Metagross absolutely needed them though, they both fell right out of OU during X and Y. It's Tyranitar and Garchomp who we should be pointing fingers at.

Steel fairy is such a nasty strong typing... I always felt that mawile looked a dark type pokemom. Dark/fairy would have been an interesting type on it.
I still do not get how it is a steel type. I feel it's isn't maw is the only thing on its body made of steel.
And because this typing Magearna is also so dahm good. Both M-Mawile and Magearna are keys in 6vs6 META. M-Mawile is the best physical wallbreaker in the game almost with no counters (You can't counter a poke if you cant't survive a hit); Magearna is more versatile, being able to function like an AV pivot, setup sweeper, anti-sweep with Heath swap (Specially useful in Ubers vs Xerneas, P-Kyogre or Necrozma DM), or revenge killer.
Yeah, this is maybe the best combination in the game, good both in defense anda attack.

A good example of a Pokemon that got revitalized by Mega Evolution. Hope GameFreak brings back Megas in Sword and Shield. Also, please no more Megas on actual good Pokemon that don't really need it.
Also, Jesus Christ. Gen 7 almost rivals Gen 5 with Power Creep. Mega Mawile and Mega Sableye dropping from Ubers, Hoopa Unbound and Mega Gardevoir now UUBL and The Tapus of the Healthy Meta.
Mega Johto starters... they danm well need it.
Also is it sad that I can see Mega Ray dropping to Ubers in one or two generations at this rate?
@@Xo-3130 Mega Ray dropping is never happening. Being able to Mega Evolve while having to hold any item of your choosing is simply too broken.
Zygarde and Mega Metagross got banned tho.
If a Pokemon could have gotten a normal evolution instead of a mega it should have been that way. So many basic and stage 1 Pokemon got the short end of the stick by getting temporary boosts.
Mawile was one of my favourites back before it was a murderbeast. It was so good to see the cute little chomper get that weird time in the limelight just blasting through things.
It still does chew through everything. Tapu Fini has become an insanely good partner for it because the Misty Surge makes it immune to burn long enough for it to Mega-Evolve and get a Swords Dance up withour fear of a random will-o-wisp or Scald crippling it before it gets going.

I find it weird how Mawile can learn Thunder Punch and Ice Punch, but not Fire Punch, yet it DOES learn Fire Fang.

It should probably learn the elemental fangs.
So apparently, it can't punch with fire, but it can bite with fire.
Also this is similar to Lucario, it can't learn fire punch, but it can learn blaze kick
Mawile knows all the elemental fangs, Thunder Punch and Ice Punch, but not Fire Punch (despite knowing Incinerate, Flamethrower and Fire Blast). Lucario is like this (learns 2/3 elemental punches but lacks Fire Punch).
I was excited that Mawile was next, until I immediately remembered, "Oh yeah, it wasn't good before Gen 6." Regardless of competitiveness, Mawile is one of my favorite Pokemon to use and favorite Gen 3. It has helped me a lot ever since Omega Ruby. And thanks to the Gen 6 games, I've been adoring Mawile for its usefulness and cuteness. Whenever Mawile was available, I would place it in my team showing how much I like the Pokemon. That's basically how I feel about Mawile. Can't wait for the next video for False Swipe Gaming.
Honestly we need more megas for pokemon like Mawile that are not great in the current Meta, though I know some people are tired of megas but come on mega Flygon would be sick.
Or simply to give some variability to the Meta via old Pokemon:

Pretty much any Pokemon that currently sucks should have a Mega Evolution which re-vamps its viability, and bring strange diversity to the meta.

rip Mawile's viability with the lack of Mega Evolution in Sw/Sh. . .
As someone who loves Mawile (just look at my icon image), I've been waiting for this video for a while. In Gen 4, I used a Mawile on my main team (I know it's not in the Sinnoh Dex, but I didn't care), and had lots of fun. In ORAS, I experimented with an all-Mawile non-Mega competitive team. I haven't won any battles, but I've had loads of fun with it and even a few close calls.

So yeah, Mawile is surprisingly versatile. The only thing holding it back is its stats. Of course, Mawile is weak, meaning I had to think carefully to cover up those weaknesses as best I could.
I tested the team against the Elite Four a few times before trying it out online. The results were mostly satisfactory except for Phoebe's Chandelure. That thing was a consistent brick wall, able to easily outspeed and OHKO the whole team. That really tested my strategic thinking.
I could've sworn Ms. Boom had Sheer Force instead of Intimidate. That probably would've made her more effective. I don't remember why I did that. Whoops.
Sadly, due to no mega evolutions in Gen 8, Mawile is most likely going to be in PU or even Untiered.
Cole Bryan Probably PU until the DEX expands more. Then untiered after that.

I love Mawile, man. Back in RSE I always thought it was cool 'cause of its rarity & design & even the move pool it had. But I never found use for it competitively against my friends for a few gens. Once Gen 6 came around & it got Mega Evolution AND Fairy typing though, it easily became one of my top 5 favorite pokemon. I won so many battles with it.

Mawile has always been one of my favorites, I was so hype when this thing's mega was first announced.
Imagine my hype when its mega turned out to be one of the best pokemon in the game.
My first time encountering a mawhile in competitive Gen 3 OU a few months ago, I got swept thanks to its iron defence boosts finishing off the chain. From that point on, i vowed revenge and I've never ran a celebi without perish song on a team combined with whirlwind skarm again. On the plus side, it caused me to actually learn the matchup against the most infuriating playstyles imaginable. Was surprised mawhile wasnt just a gimmick addition, it's actually a nice addition. Just thought I'd share my experience.

Dude Mega Mawile should’ve been a normal evolution without huge power. I think mega mawile was too cool to abandon and its regular form is so forgettable. Idk why the devs pass away these great changes. I’m sure fans would appreciate it because mawile feels so incomplete

Also, unlike many mega, the statistics are not exaggerated at all, it only has a total base of 480, the only thing that could be discussed is about the Huge Power ability, which is the main reason why Mawile-Mega broke the meta in 6th generation.

@@Entelarmer Ah good ol mega ray. The first pokemon after Gen1 Mewtwo to break Smogon. But let´s face it: It is just nasty. Only mega without a mega stone, an ability which negates flying weaknesses (combined with decend hp and defenses), great movepool (run it physikal, special, mixed with draco etc). Let´s face it... there are only few things it hasn´t: Extreme bulk, Quiver Dance, reliable recovery... but hey who needs that when you can spam brave bird with no recoil after one dragon dance and just sweep?

Mawile receiving a mega evolution and becoming a steel/fairy type certainly made Mawile a terrifying Pokémon for players to be concerned about facing off against. Being able to defeat the likes of Garchomp, Salamance, and Tyranitar with the new fairy type making Mawile completely immune to dragon type moves and being immune to poison/sandstorm. Plus Mawile’s mega evolution does feel like it would be a natural evolution for Mawile.
You didn't mention Virginia regionals for 2015. Karl Concepcion placed first with a Mawile on his team.

Poor Mawile. Had the distinction of being the only solo Steel type besides Registeel, then went Steel/ Fairy and Mega, which gave it just enough hype for people to say "Oooh I remember that one"

Welp, it was as bad as Mawile from gen 3 and 4, he had a niche in Gen V when he got access Prankster and was used in or against Baton Pass teams iirc. In gen VI he got his mega which made him THE Stall Pokémon, he was so good at what he was doing that he eventually got banned like a few days before SuMo's official release. In gen VII he's ok as a stall mon, but the introduction of Z-Moves was a hard blow to its viability though. He wasn't as good in Doubles, I didn't play through VGC 14&15, but he was sure hella bad is VGC16, bc you know, Xerneas being a thing, and its playstyle being much more suited to Singles where he can eat hits for days and Recover the damage he took.
Y'know, it's such a shame that even IF Mega Mawile comes back, it has been absolutely neutered in usefulness because of a new pokemon.

Crowned. Sword. Zacian.

Sure its attack isn't as ridiculous (It is still huge at 170 base!) but the big thing here is speed.
*Zacian is the fastest Fairy-type pokemon in existence at 148 base. Triple that of Mega Mawile.*
That also means another thing...

The only ones that come close are Dragapult at 142 and Mega Sceptile (Which isn't even in Sword and Shield!) at 145!

FullTimeSlacker but Scarf Pult doesn’t really do anything to Zacian unless you have spikes up and it switches into a Shadow Ball or something

Why would you use the word replacement. obviously zacian is better, that thing is not comming close to OU. That is like comparing duraladon with dialga. Mega mawile has no competition in OU. The closest thing to competition is magearna.

I know this is obivous, but someone has to say it. Sadly, Mawile's mega was taken away in gen 8 and it became weak agian. Even though it has a good typing, it can't do anything even in PU. So it once agian fell to Untiered. And now with the announcement of a new gen, fans are hoping Mawile might get a evolution in the future.
Mawile is one of those pokemon with an interesting design. It’s mouth looks like a mutated chili pepper with teeth and somehow that makes it a steel type.
YES! I’ve been waiting for this one! I’ve always liked Mawile since it was introduced in the gen 3 games, but I’ve recently come to absolutely love it!
Mawile is one of my favorite pokemon, and I hope the regular version gets some kind of buff. I'm not a competitive player, but I'm currently playing pokemon sword and I'm hoping to get one with the ability sheer force, and mixing it with the life orb to get a total 60% extra damage, and the ability sheer force ignore's the life orb's downside as long as I attack with an attack that has a secondary effect. I might also have some pokemon get up it's attack and putting up a subsitute before baton passing over to mawile to have a lot of attack, even without the mega form. Even though regular mawile isn't very good competitively, i'll try to use it anyways
Regular Mawile is still cool and I used it as a counter for physical wallbreakers. I also used it as a late game sweeper.
I like at the end, he basically said enough is enough, we're doing Torterra next.

My favorite Mega Evolution. A Pokemon that went from a complete zero to an amazing hero with just a few tweaks. It was like Scizor all over again.
This may not be a popular opinion, but I wish they would mix things up a bit. Every video is starting to look the same.

I had never given much thought to Mawile in the past. I didn't dislike it but it never really stood out in my mind but now looking back with this video a mega evolution was exactly what it needed. It not only helped it make a mark in competitive but it also helped it stand out more with it's design. Good for you Mawile. You deserve it.

It's sad that after the necessary buff that was its Mega Evolution, it's not present in Sword and Shield. And much worse, they didn't even buff regular Mawile to compensate.
Ikr, I came back to this video hoping to find some tips on making use of her again. Mawile is one of my favorites and I don't want to have to drop her because gamefreak decided that mega evolutions weren't worth it

As much as I dislike Mega Evolution, this is one of those Pokemons that really needs it.
I wish these types of stories were more common. The huge problem with Mega evolution was that it was basically a popularity contest and really only made already strong pokemon stronger, but in these instances where a forgotten pokemon gets a boost to OU is really what the main goal should have been all along.
I honestly dont understand a single thing about competitive pokemon, however your videos are sooo good im watching them all.

Little do you know that most of the grass type starters suck terribly the only noteable one is venasaur and maybe serperior i guess

Mawile is one of the best examples of how Mega Evolution buffed bad Pokemon. Without it it would drop to depths of PU and probably be Untiered, thanks to its Mega, Mawile has a very respectable attack stat and could crush opponents it could not before. The Fairy typing was also a blessing removing the Fighting weakness and giving it two immunities to common types was amazing, I love this mon and I'm glad GF gave us Mega Evolution, I hope they could continue it by giving it to forgotten mons like Noctowl, Delcatty and others
Mega Mawile should've really been a normal evolution. Mega mawile is such dogshit battle design wise.
Because design really matters that much? I don't recall there being a move that OHKO's ugly Pokémon, so pull your head out your ass.
I *love* mawile. It may not have stood a chance competitively until it got a mega, but it's design has always been one of my favorites. It's one of the pokemon that I just instantly loved as soon as I saw it - like mimikyu, garchomp line, empoleon line, kingdra line, primarina line, and [obviously] a few others.
It was literally the first pokemon I IV breed for Gen6.
It wasn't the mega evolution that made it strong, it was the new ability Huge Power that made it overkill.
As a dark type lovers im actually kinda sad ;-; (yes i frequently got swept by magearna n mawile) wished that fairy doesnt resist bug and grass being immune to fairy.
Speaking of which, can someone explain why sableye doesnt exist in the championship? Kinda remember it because its the "couple" with mawile from deep dewford cave
