These guys are actually located in my hometown. I used to drive past their offices many times without realizing they were a game studio. They really hit the jackpot here, because they basically have a permanent guarantee of financial stability now. The chance that Nintendo will ever shut them down is absolutely minuscule with the amount of surplus money they’re sitting on.
Nintendo loves buying things that actually help them, rather than just buying up IPs to hoard and never use. Nintendo has been struggling with hardware recently, so them buying these guys shows a desire to improve.
Even if Nintendo no longer sees them as a third-party port team years down the line, odds are they'll use them for first-party ports/remasters or even put them to work on new games, instead of shuttering them
@Domenic1407 I wouldn't say that that's necessarily true: keep in mind that Good-Feel developed Kirby's Epic Yarn, Yoshi's Wooly World, and Wario Land: Shake It. They don't always hit the mark, but I think it's important to recognize the good projects that have come out of them. :)
I disagree, they've consistently been able to get games that the Switch should not be able to run at all to be brought to the system in a playable state. Yeah, Mortal Kombat 1 looks hilariously bad, but it's functionally a PS5 game being ran on hardware that's more in line with the PS3 in terms of specs than the PS4.
I respect this acquisition. Shiver doesn’t have any IP of their own, so it’s obvious Nintendo’s interested in the talent instead. I’ve heard Shiver’s ports of MK11 and Hogwarts were pretty good. Having a studio to court 3rd parties by helping them get their games on Nintendo systems is a unique idea and it’ll definitely help get more games on Nintendo hardware in the future.
@Yoshizuyuner even then, if it's interesting enough Nintendo might let them make it anyway, I doubt they'd say no to another exclusive for the Switch 2 if the ip interests them
Of note for NLG, that seems to be a case of not wanting history to repeat. NLG, just like Rare, was going to be sold to another company either way. For Rare, Nintendo was not interested in buying out companies. This ended up with Rare instead going to Microsoft. Nintendo didn't foresee this possibility, and they lost one of their greatest allies. NLG wasn't in a bad spot like Rare, but the investors (I believe) were just done with them. They were going to sell the company one way or another. Nintendo didn't want what happened with Rare to happen again because NLG is one of their best partners. So they went ahead and bit the bullet
Technically Nintendo did actually throw in an offer to buy Rare but it was literally too little and too late since there were now other players involved besides just Nintendo and Microsoft (I forget who tbh) who were bidding higher.
Honestly, I would love to know what led the investors to feel that way. NLG's previous game (Luigi's Mansion 3) had sold 14 million copies. That's guaranteed to be utterly ludicrous profit on the budget the game had assuming they get a cut of each sale, even if we don't know what it was exactly.
@@lukeo5761 Investors don't actually care about the longterm strength of a company or their assets. They care about how much _growth_ the company can achieve. If a company has a crazy successful product launch but the product hits market saturation quickly and the next launch is another 5 years away, then they basically perceive the company as having "peaked," even if they can maintain steady sales of that product. Basically, it doesn't matter how good their revenue stream is - if the line isn't going _up,_ the investors see them as, at best, an asset that needs to be liquidated before it loses value.
@@lukeo5761 Maybe they didn't foresee much growth for them? 14 million copies is a lot, so much so that it's hard to beat that metric. The investors could get more money investing more into companies with a higher expected profit and potential growth.
Since they are mostly a porting studio this makes perfect sense for Nintendo. They can get more games into the next switch and get paid for the privilege.
The fact they bought a company that makes ports put together with the fact they've been going harder on emulation and we're expecting a new console, I wonder if the new Nintendo console will be focused on bringing old games to the forefront. They've already started going for it and if they make thier new consle dual screen somehow I feel like that would be a banger. Have a company make ports of the old while you focus on newer games. Release more games with half the effort. It seems like a no brainer.
Fun fact: Japanese game companies hate working with Nintendo on games because often times Nintendo will steal their best talent. It happened specifically the Sonic Generations team who ended up working on Mario Odyssey
I feel as if Nintendo prefers having a strong relationship with these companies rather than outright owning them. That way, they WANT to make games for Nintendo platforms. Instead of being obligated to.
Indeed, I know some wonder why not buy a studio that's already works well with you but it's important to remember that studio independence and culture is important. When companies get bought, both those things are at risk. Nintendo letting studios be independent for better or worse is a sign of a company you can have a strong relationship with.
Arlo also mentioned that Shiver was part of the Embracer Group, which has been laying off a ton of people recently. Nintendo may have saved them from being canned and even got it for cheap. With the power of the next-gen switch and the quality control of Nintendo, we shouldn’t have a Mortal Combat 1 situation (PS5 game quickly ported to the Xbox360 powered Switch)
Microsoft showed that just buying companies just because there is a chance to make a lot of money is a huge risk. Nintendo chooses to make their own studios better and bigger so that they have complete control over all projects. And if they buy a company, it is a company that they can trust completely. Nintendo knows that third party support on the Switch 2 will be huge, so Shiver will help with that
Not to defend Embracer, but more for some clarification. Embracer had a $2 Billion deal with Savvy Games Group which had already previously invested $1 Billion into Embracer. Embracer unfortunately took this as a opportunity to buy up a bunch of studios to secure themselves as one of the next big entertainment groups. At the last minute Savvy pulled out of the deal (as far as I know, the reason still isn't public) which caused Embracer to start selling / closing everything. I remember watching a video with Bellular talking about the whole situation and then seeing videos of the CEO just looking absolutely destroyed over the news and I don't doubt that part of it is knowing how many people are about to have their lives made worse from this. I don't know the full scope of the entire deal between Savvy and Embracer, but most of all this could have been avoided if Embracer had waited for the deal to close before buying everything.
I mean when nintendo bought monolith soft back in 2006 because they had potential to make so it make sense to buy other studio also monolith soft was struggling as well

They seem to be a studio that specializes in porting games from more powerful systems to the switch, so my theory is that they will be making switch 2 games cross-gen
I think this is cool! A port specialist for the next system, this seems like a really cool utility and an exciting prospect the future. Maybe they’ll try to be much more third-party friendly next generation!

I'm really hoping that Nintendo shows what honest growth through these kinds of deals looks like. There's nothing to tell me it won't be, but I really hope in light of studio shuttering as of late that this can be a success story
The interesting thing about Shiver is that they ported Mortal Kombat 11 to the Switch which is widely seen to be one of those "impossible ports" as the game actually runs at 60FPS in combat and was very competently done. Also, both MK1 and Hogwarts Legacy on the Switch run significantly better NOW than they did at launch which is usually more a testament to a studio not being given enough time to make a port happen. The thing is, for the next several years Shiver will just continue to do exactly what they were already doing as the tweet indicated so assuming they are already contracted to port a few games over to Switch 2 the real benefit from Nintendo is that they can give Shiver even more tech support for optimization with them becoming first party and other than that they can just leave them alone and they'll continue to do what they do. Really, I only see Nintendo pouring additional funds into Shiver IF they feel like they need to scale up their operation so that they can handle multiple projects at once as they are quite small currently (the number I saw was something around 20 employees).
Shiver now being a 1st party studio could also mean that situations like what happened with MK1 is less likely to, since Nintendo probably wouldn't let 3rd party companies try to pull that kind of opressive timetable with one of their own personal studios.
これは非常に的を絞った、妥当な範囲の買収のように思えます。また、Switch 時代の他の買収 (SRD、Nintendo Pictures) とも一致しています。 Nonetheless I was really surprised by Nintendo purchasing an Embracer studio, but this acquisition makes a lot of sense. Embracer has been selling off many studios after their failed deal with the Saudi government, and Nintendo could use extra support to build up the Switch successor's library with third party ports. They don't do acquisitions that often, so this must be a big priority for them.
I'm pretty confident they bought it because they own shiver, the logo even has shark fins in it. Clearly Nintendo saw that and realized it should be ours.
Nintendo generally only acquire studios who have shown interest in becoming a part of their brand, thus avoiding the controversial purchases that is otherwise frequent in the market. Therefore your guess about there possibly having been talks behind the scenes is, based on track record, the most likely thing that happened and is what I would put my money on as well. Beyond that they prefer to cultivate their own developers, which is why they "recently" (2022) bought a plot next to their Kyoto HQ for the purpose of building an entirely new studio - that building won't be finished before 2028, but will allow them to eventually double their own talent. It's tagged for R&D, but a lot of Nintendo's R&D also result in new franchises, and this will also free up space in the original HQ for development of established franchises. In other words, Nintendo is growing positively right now.
It seems everybody has forgotten about one major detail from last years 2023 Xbox games conference; which is when Phil spencer announced that he would be partnering up with Nintendo to bring activision and blizzard games to the switch; and more specifically, he mentioned call of duty. (Over watch is already a title, as well as a couple activision/blizzard games). Idk, i think this plays a huge role into Nintendo’s decision to buy this porting company. We all know how the old call of duty titles performed on Nintendo hardware… (not really good). This goes without saying that the switch 2 will be very powerful, I want to say competitive with the XSX and PS5, so porting/transferring games traditionally made for those consoles should bring in a lot of new customers, with an up to par quality of course given this action by Nintendo- and the deal Phil spencer made which acquired activision and blizzard in the first place (to make them more accessible, to make more money) will definitely play out in front of us on the activision/blizzard side of things for sure. In high quality!
I will keep my eyes on whatever Shiver Entreteinment works on, Nintendo bought Monolith Soft and Retro Studios and they have only made bangers, man if only Nintendo bought Hudson Soft too instead of Konami
It's random at first but it makes sense when you think about it. Like you said it seems they are getting ready on all fronts for the next system. Apparently Shiver will continue to be able to work externally through commissions which is great. Hoping for a fruitful relationship between the two My guess for their first 1st party port would be Zelda related
My favorite sports are the old school arcade ports that you can buy. Hamster comes to mind. They've been hoarding every neo Geo game and all those old arcade games made by SNK in a couple other companies to all these new systems and I say keep them coming
It's sad they're basically only good for porting; but any great studio would want an original IP... even if eventually. But nay, they'll only be used for porting.
They already did, MK1 was patched recently and works well. Shiver released it as it was because WB forced them to port a PS5 game to Switch in basically no time at all.
More serious first big Switch 2 port: Tekken 8. There’s already a strong relationship between Bandai Namco and Nintendo, and given how well Tekken 8 is doing compared to prior titles I could see them wanting to snowball that success.
Ultimately, it was pretty obvious in hindsight, but I never quite pictured Nintendo coming out on top of the video game Industry after all these years. I always pictured them as being the constant third or maybe second place.
The first game ported by Shiver will be Wario Land 3. None of the other Wario Land games, just 3. Nobody will understand why. They'll ask Nintendo about it in an interview and they'll just dodge the question with some corporate answer. The game will sell 13 million in its first week. Nintendo will proceed to not even mention the Wario Land series for the next 30 years.
Nintendo isgoing to thrive next gen. With a console thats just slightly more powerful, they can have such a big library of older third party games right off the bat. Im the type of person that doesn’t really see the big difference between PS4 and 5 and 6 or whatever in terms of performance and quality, though. Games can only be so good as far as controls and graphics and resolution goes, you know?
Theory - Because they managed to port such heavy games to the switch, maybe they have some proven inhouse tech for ports, that MAYBE they said " well if the switch was just a little stronger we could use our software to port ANYTHING to it easily" - Mortal Kombat looked bad, but it ran right?
And they even patched it to make it look pretty good, they were just forced to port a PS5 game to the Switch in like a weekend, so it didn't release well
I've played the game back in the day, I was 14 then and Vivians bully was indeed a thing, but the whole femboy thing is in Japanese version (or so I heard many moons ago) either way the game as a whole was amazing in 04 😊.
This is a very good and strategic move for Nintendo. Having an additional studio on hand specializing with getting other people's games to run on Switch 2 will make things easier for big western 3rd party AAA games. Nintendo could easily lend Shiver out to a company like Take-Two/Rockstar and have them help in bringing say GTA6 to the Switch 2. Shiver being in the Eastern Time zone is also a nice benefit as it makes collaborating with studios in Europe and the rest of North America much easier as they'll be at work during the same time at various points in the day, not to mention no issues regarding a language barrier. Considering the Switch 2 is going to be close to the Series S based on the hardware specs list discovered earlier, it'll be getting significantly more third party games than the Switch, not just that, but many will launch on it the same day as other systems. Having a studio internally to assist others will only result in better third party games and relations.
Shiver could also see a huge jump in manpower, since Nintendo will probably want them on hand for several games at the same time which obviously requires more hands on deck than what they currently have
@@1originalaccountname yeah, that's what I meant. With 1st party backing Shiver could start hiring a lot more people and expand their manpower. If 20 people can port a game in a year, for example, then they could probably expand up to 50 and get that same game out 6 months earlier with the same level of polish. And it's not like there isn't a surplus of talent out there looking for work, what with all the many layoffs that every other gaming company is doing...
@@rotciv557 I don't see them doubling in size soon, but maybe up to 30 in like a year or two. They have a great pitch to attract top talent though: Do you want to work for Nintendo and live in South Florida?
This is a very interesting purchase by Nintendo. Its bit the company i would have wanted but honestly theu have proven they are talented team do i am very excited for the future.
The Mortal Kombat 1 Switch port was absolutely horrible. It didn't even release on PS4 or Xbox One, but Warner Bros must have demanded a Switch port because of the huge install base or something. There was no way for these devs to make that work.
See Embracer Group, but as was pointed out in the video Nintendo isn't know for buying up studios. The last one they acquired was Next Level Games back at the start of 2021 which was already an unofficial first party developer by that point.
I fully understand all of that and I am not criticizing anybody or anything. Just saying that both Nintendo and these acquisitions still need to maintain profit. Just because a business has a billion dollars doesn't mean that it's a smart move to make acquisitions. I feel that a lot of people make too many assumptions when it comes to business and finance.
@@PolDlokay Well Nintendo are taking it slow and acquisitions have always turned out well for them.
My prediction for the first Switch 2 rerelease by Shiver is the Golden Sun duology (or maybe even trilogy) being remastered
Oohh good one. I was going to go with Wrecking Crew HD Ultimate.

Now that’s a name I haven’t heard in a long time…
The fact that other than long load times Hogwarts Legacy runs perfectly fine on something as old as the Switch tells me they have talent.
Maybe this means that we’ll get some actual quality assurance for 3rd party ports.
rip the person playing, that CPU is smoking them
Maybe it’ll be my sweet sweet kid Icarus uprising
Arlo where is the sequel to Bug Interview
I can't wait for the _Wii Music_ 'wiimastered' edition.
MK was fixed it’s good now
Yeah most people ignore this but it's been patched and aside from some long loading times the gameplay experience is solid now.
I feel like Shiver could make a WarioWare game. Imagine Smooth Moves or WarioWare Gold remastered on Switch 2.
the mortal kombat 1 port *was* actually pretty decent, after it got patched. the launch version was pretty bad though
Mortal Kombat 1 was the game that wasn't great at launch. It was quickly patched though, it's now very good.
I bet twitter's going to have a field day with this one
Definetely my most wanted remaster, or even just a 10 dollar port, is Earthbound. A girl can dream...
I will keep my eyes on whatever Shiver Entreteinment works on, Nintendo bought Monolith Soft and Retro Studios and they have only made bangers, man if only Nintendo bought Hudson Soft too instead of Konami
Something about this makes me wonder if this could be in any way related to Nintendo's history with third-party emulations of their older games
Pretty smart I guess if they wanted they can improve things just like they did with retro studios? it's a high possibility.
They could be heading up switch to switch 2 emulation, there’s not a hugh leap between ports and emulation
Nintendo might be interested in how they get next gen software running on last gen hardware
It's random at first but it makes sense when you think about it. Like you said it seems they are getting ready on all fronts for the next system. Apparently Shiver will continue to be able to work externally through commissions which is great. Hoping for a fruitful relationship between the two
My guess for their first 1st party port would be Zelda related
My favorite sports are the old school arcade ports that you can buy. Hamster comes to mind. They've been hoarding every neo Geo game and all those old arcade games made by SNK in a couple other companies to all these new systems and I say keep them coming
This is indeed a very smart decision to have a studio that focuses on 3rd party games especially in the long run!
I googled them, they made some really impressive ports so I guess that’s why.
It's sad they're basically only good for porting; but any great studio would want an original IP... even if eventually.
But nay, they'll only be used for porting.
If we are lucky they’ll fix the ports they’ve made, especially MK1. Great Stuff as always.
They already did, MK1 was patched recently and works well. Shiver released it as it was because WB forced them to port a PS5 game to Switch in basically no time at all.
Very much so!
Their first port will be the Wii U version of Breath of the Wild.
More serious first big Switch 2 port: Tekken 8. There’s already a strong relationship between Bandai Namco and Nintendo, and given how well Tekken 8 is doing compared to prior titles I could see them wanting to snowball that success.
Inhousing a strong technical partner is a good idea, i think. It's not really a games studio so much as a nintendo port supporting house
WHAT AN EXCITING TIME
Ultimately, it was pretty obvious in hindsight, but I never quite pictured Nintendo coming out on top of the video game
Industry after all these years.
2:27 they did it when Square Enix was selling after their buying spree, so the cycle continues
Were you born under a blue moon, Arlo?
I'm really sorry that you had to play Scribblenauts Showdown
They may begin working on updates for Switch 1 titles to run better on Switch 2
my dream is an arms port
I so wish that Nintendo would buy the guys who made Hi-Fi Rush...
A clear sign of their current tumultuousness is that their website still has them listed under Embracer
Shiver could also see a huge jump in manpower, since Nintendo will probably want them on hand for several games at the same time which obviously requires more hands on deck than what they currently have
@rotciv557 Shiver only has 20 employees, it's not a big studio at all
@@1originalaccountname yeah, that's what I meant.
They can also buy Panic Button!
Ah, but fuck Rareware and fuck Alphadream I guess
This is a very interesting purchase by Nintendo. Its bit the company i would have wanted but honestly theu have proven they are talented team do i am very excited for the future.
Hell just better optimization would be nice.
The Mortal Kombat 1 Switch port was absolutely horrible. It didn't even release on PS4 or Xbox One, but Warner Bros must have demanded a Switch port because of the huge install base or something. There was no way for these devs to make that work.
Funnily enough, they recently patched the game and it runs great now. Just goes to show that they were given no time to do a very achievable job.
Most businesses go bankrupt by acquiring too many businesses. It's never always a good thing.
It's not like this is a crazy acquisition that'll cost them billions
The worst one I can think of is Retro Studios, who has experienced plenty of development hell in the past and hasn't put out a new game in the past 10 years.
But they've made some definite bangers so it certainly wasn't a bad acquisition.
@@amadeus.7436 oh yeah, I agree with your point. My point isn't whether Nintendo made good acquisitions or not but, in general, businesses have to be super careful, which I am sure Nintendo is. But only time will tell.
Do I hear Xenoblade Chronicles X port?
probably did it so they can have them port every game i desperately wish they would port
I think nintendo might have got them to try to port ps4 and xbox one games to switch 2
Now buy the company that ported Doom and Doom Sternal!
What if by some slim chance this studio is meant for making ports to PC?
Why would they do it now that they're making record profits? They only got into the mobile market during their lowest point, and that amounted to basically nothing outside of Fire Emblem Heroes.
@@ironicdivinemandatestan4262 more profits and experimentation.
If it works for Xbox and PlayStation why not try it with older games.
you should do a podcast!
The one studio they should have bought is Rare Ltd. but whatever I guess...
Speaking of remakes, I’d love to see a remake of the original legend of Zelda as a 3D open world game instead of 2D
