Thanks for gardening with me!
Looks delicious! We have been harvesting cantaloupes and recently our first watermelon. It was very special because my youngest child planted that seed
Hi Beverly, that makes it extra special - bet your child is eagerly awaiting harvest. Have fun!
It's amazing that large melons can grow vertically. If you hadn't shown it, I wouldn't be tempted to try it! Heck, I didn't even know that small melons could be grown vertically. Exciting new adventure for my next garden! Thank you for the link to the netting. It's surprising to learn that some netting is UV resistant and some isn't. How about that! Learning something new every day! Thanks Kim!!! Good health and happiness to you and yours, always!
Hi Ke, pretty crazy, right? So fun to see them hanging from the trellis. I'm always learning something new too! Stay tuned for the harvest!
I found you on the old WM video and have enjoyed your informative channel and have Love you & y’all every since, Thank you CaliKim & “Camera Guy” 😍
Hello! Great idea. It is especially interesting for those who have a small plot, but they really want to grow watermelons. Thank you for the video. See you💐❤️🌻🐩😊👍👌

I AM GROWING WATERMELON VERTICALLY TOO! I cut a pair of pantyhose right up the middle. Put a melon down one leg and tied it up, same for the other melon. They have grown huge in there, and nice thing is...hose stretches as melons grow bigger! Fingers crossed👍😉
Appreciate yours soft voice .
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching, Juana!
love your watermelon Kim that well be the watermelon I well grow next season
It's a beaut, Jackie - can't wait for you to grow them! Hope your garden is surviving the crazy OK heat wave! Thanks for stopping by!
We’re growing cantelope, baby watermelon, cucumbers all vertically. We’ve harvested 7 cucs so far, the few biggest watermelon are the size of a softball now and the cantalope are just starting to grow. We planted closer than recommended and everything seems to be doing good. Right now we have old tshirts supporting the few melons, but prob will do the pantyhose trick soon.
I found that knee highs work best to support the sugar baby melons and stretch them out and wrap above tomatoe cage and down to the top of knee high opening and tie a knot .
Yes I am growing the yellow meat watermelon I don't know what variety but I am excited
How exciting, Dymonic! I bet you can't wait to taste those juicy, fresh, melons, so yummy on a hot summer day. Enjoy!
Yes I'm growing in small melons and canteloupe.
Great to hear, Sharon. What variety are you growing? Thanks for watching!
@@CaliKim29 sugar baby watermelon and I don't know the variety canteloupe but I'm happy to see the little melons growwing.
Hello Kim & Jerry!🖐 Those jubilee watermelons are beautiful and exciting to see!👏 Thanks for sharing about the netting!❤
I have a trellis along my huge container that I am growing sugar baby watermelons in! Getting ready to waterbath can fresh dilly green beans! Blessings to you and family!💝 🦋7/27/2022🦋
Hi. Barb =- those dilly beans are delish, my mom made them when I was growing every summer. Enjoy! Thanks for stopping by - glad you enjoyed the melons!
Awesome ❤️ 🥰 👌🏻 👌🏻
Hi Kamal - glad you enjoyed it - growing your own watermelon is so rewarding and the taste is out of this world! Thanks for watching!
@@CaliKim29 you are most welcome 🥰 ❤️
Stay connected ❤️
Very nice
Glad you enjoyed it, Kuldeep! Are you growing melons this summer? Thanks for stopping by!
Watermelons are one of my fave summer fruits. I am growing sugar babies in containers first time. They are still small, about six inches tall. I live in the SF Bay Area on the coast and we don’t get really nice weather here until Aug. I hope I do get some watermelons😋. Do you have any tips for me Kim? Thank you!
Hi Kim and Jerry! I have Sugar Baby and Kaho watermelons planted at the base of a vertical trellis. This is the first time I am growing watermelon vertically. I am hoping it will help minimize powdery mildew.
Hi Debbie- that's exciting! I'm sure PM is a big issue in your humid climate. It should help stave it off a bit longer, keep me posted! Thanks for waching!
This works for vertically grown pumpkins and even butternut squash that grow awkwardly on a vertical plant. I remember losing a big pumpkin due to it dropping and learned quickly how important slings are. They used to recommend pantyhose but they stretch too much and break down in the heat. Tulle sometimes breaks in the heat or rips easily so this is a great solution. I do worry about wildlife getting stuck in netting though.
Hi Amy, sorry to hear that you lost a pumpkin, but glad you learned from the experience and are moving forward. Yes, this works great for butternut, or anything other large veggie that is growing vertically. Tulle and pantyhose works great for sugar babies, but the large melons need the big guns! Thanks for watching!
I’ve got some sugar babies I started indoors that I’m hardening off. I hope they make it with this heat!
I am growing Jubilee watermelons vertically. When you make the sling to support the melon, should the melon be angled, upright, horizontal , or does it matter as long as the tension is off the stem? Thanks
Hey Amy! It doesn't matter what position the watermelon is in. As long as the tension is off the stem, you're good to go!
I'm also growing mine vertically. Would an old t-shirt work instead of the net or tool?
Looks awesome. The melons in our markets here are sad, small round and seedless 😑
Hi Kodiak - couldn't agree with you more - homegrown melons have TONS of flavor, nothing like those flavorless store bought melons. Are you growing any this summer? Thanks for watching!
@@CaliKim29 Still too busy with business and not enough space to grow anything, queen, but I do have plans for one day ( including persimmon, peach, apple and cherry trees 🤤 ).
I was waiting for you to come back and tell us about the fertilizer you use after the 6-8 weeks from planting?
Hi Candace - I covered how to do a mid season boost in this vid about my Sugar Baby Melons, bit.ly/CaliKimWatermelonSling. You can do the same for the large melons, or any plant in your garden. Thanks for watching!
I wished we had a longer season so they would grow better here
Hi Ron, the large varieties do take about 90 ish days of warm sunshine! Have you tried Sugar Babies? They are much smaller take about 70 days from seed to harvest. If you start seeds indoors and pop transplants into your garden you'll have a headstart and a better chance of getting a harvest. Good luck!
@@CaliKim29 maybe next year I will try the others
Last year I had a Jubilee that weighed 45.4 pounds. I'll send you a picture. This year they died but my Congo watermelons are still going.
Whoo Hoo - that's fantastic, Jake - hope your Congo melons do well for you this summer! Thanks for stopping by!
I have had so many problems growing melon. Last year my cantaloupe was constantly attacked by little black bugs, I think spider mites. Well this year the same thing happened with my sugar baby melon and I just pulled out my three plants. I did use the insecticide soap first and then the neem oil recipe. Really disappointed and I don’t know what to do about those bugs. In that same planter I had mums and garlic also planted.
Seven dust does wonders
I’ve picked 3 watermelon I thought were ripe. Mot even close. There are still 4 water melon left and at least 4 cantaloupe. 🤞🏻🤞🏻
Hi Jack - ripeness for watermelon can be tricky - sometimes trial and error. Look for that curly tendril closest to the fruit to turn brown, and the bottom (if you're growing them on the ground) to change from white to yellow. For cantaloupe - the rind will change from a green to a yellowish color. The end of the melon away from the stem will have a slight give when gently pushed and the melon will easily "slip" or detach from the vine when they are ripe. Better luck on the next harvest - keep me posted!
What if the best fertilzer you use for watermelon?
Manure
Hi Badyellat - I covered how to do a mid season boost in this vid about my Sugar Baby Melons, bit.ly/CaliKimWatermelonSling. You can do the same for the large melons, or any plant in your garden. Thanks for watching!
I have some sugar babies growing. They're softball size atm.
Hello British - so rewarding to grow sugar babies, one of my favs and so easy to grow! Enjoy!
💯💯💯💯
Glad you enjoyed the video, Nature. Any melons going in your garden? Thanks for watching!
Would using tulle be less expensive, it's very strong
It gets brittle and rips easily in hot sun.
Hi Karen, tulle is a great option for smaller melons, such as sugar babies, but just isn't strong enough for these whoppers. Watch this vid for more info on slings for smaller melons, bit.ly/CaliKimWatermelonSling. Thanks for watching!
Hi Amy, you go that right! Tulle is a fantastic inexpensive option for bug covers, or for smaller melon support, but yes, it's nice that this netting has UV resistance. Thanks for stopping by!
Hi Kim growing sugar baby watermelon 🍉 and Jubilee watermelon in my raise bed Shelly Oklahoma Tulsa
Hi Shelly, fantastic, I bet you can't wait to harvest, you'll LOVE them! Keep me posted!
