  • Trellis could cost upto $30 per piece. I made two trellis for $7.50. These Trellises are very easy and cheap to make. They are sturdy and would not topple over. Plus these trellis fir inside a 4 foot wide raised bed and are high enough to provide a lot for space for plants to climb.

    First of all, great job. I am going to do this for my sweet potatoes. A couple of suggestions. Wood is weakest in longitudinal shear so putting fasteners into the end grain is not recommended. I would recommend triangular plywood corners at the top. You can fasten the two pieces together and get sway bracing at the same time. With a jig saw or router, you could even cut an arch shaped piece for the corner. That would look nice. Takes a little more time.
    Also, at 2:20, you are putting a screw into the end grain of that horizontal piece. Instead, bring that horizontal piece over on the side of the upright and put the screw into side grain of the upright. That will hold much better. Thank you for listening.

    • @madvinmryk
      @madvinmryk Год назад +2

      Yes, end grain is notoriously weak for holding screws. You can also do this: drill holes for dowels perpendicularly to where the screws will go into the end grain, glue in the dowels and then drill pilot holes to insert the screws. This will give the proper wood grain direction for the screws to bite into, without having to overlap the wood pieces and then add triangular corners as well..

    wow cost have sored! Home depot March 30th 2022 cost for one 1 x2 x 8 is $8.81. Thats the least expensive. They go up from there depending on the kind of wood. More today for one board than for the whole trellis in May 2019! Not good! Still a great video!

    • @melody5437
      @melody5437 4 года назад +5

      I think you'll need something heavier duty for melons. It might work if you doubles or tripled the string and twisted it- or just got heavier twine. I love these trellises, but string and twine tend to stretch and sag with just beans on them, so you'll want to find something that can handle the weight.

    Thanks for taking the time to build and tell Jag. I built my own trellis this weekend following your specs. I made some adjustments; I used 5 boards instead of 4 since my bed is wider, and used "L" brackets to brace the cross-bars and give the trellis more strength. It came out great, I wish I could upload some pics.

    After watching your video, I decided to follow your directions and make one for myself. It turned out great! I used vegetable trellis netting, because I already had some. The only thing I would recommend is to use a heavy duty staple gun to staple and secure the braces in the corners. Then, if you are building this by yourself, it makes drilling the pilot holes & inserting the screws easier. I also used a staple gun to secure the netting around the frames. Took a lot less time. Thanks for the design!

    I watched your video and was going to copy your design plan but the dimension makes no sense. You stated buying 4x 8ft length and each 8 ft length is cut into a 4ft 8inch and 3ft 7 inch piece. An 8 ft length gives you 96inches. The 4ft 8 inch and 3ft 7 inch adds up to 99 inches. Far surpassing the length of the 8 ft length u begin with. Can u explain this inconsistencies. Also the trellis height looks like 8ft tall and no way could be only 4ft 8inches in heightbased on video

    OMGoooooosh!! That's THE solution for my balcony that I was looking for 🤦 I'll use two sticks for each side of our balcony for my tomatoes and peas simply to create narrow supportive walls, no space for the whole construction 😍 thank you so much!!!!!!!
    BTW I think that my husband will divorce me after this, anyone has a spare bed at home? He is already complaining every year that I'm a bee-magnet 😂😂

    Pro Tip...trying to screw a metal screw into another metal screw is a REALLY bad idea. Unless there's a decent gap between the screws the wood will split. Please learn from all of this guys mistakes.

    I had seen your video before and search for it again because I needed measurements but I am going to be making a 30 foot trellis and it needs to be 7-8’ feet high so that people can walk underneath it while everything grows around them… I will just have to adjust the amount of woould I use.. thank you

    Very good video. What type of screw you are using to connect the 1x2
    I am worried of the wood splitting using screws

    love this concept. I will try it with some modification, unfortunately i dont have dirt yard i grow in containers so i will have to do some thinking how to make it stable but i already have a great idea. thank you!( However, I dont think what you are showing in the video is actually the dimensiosn you stated here, is it? if you are cutting teh pcs into 3 ft 4 ins and 4 ft 8 ins, how does the frame end up being 3 ft 7 ins and 4 ft 8ins???

    I have been using lashing wire, it's much better and stronger than the thread you are using (Stainless Steel Lashing Wire | .038, TYPE 302)

    • @raoh8096
      @raoh8096 4 года назад +28

      But, the purpose of the cotton thread is that it can be cut and composted at the end of the season. Wire will need to be dismantled and disposed of.

      I used a plastic-type twine. It should hold up to the rain better and last longer. Not as earth friendly as cotton but I had it laying around not using it.

      @@raoh8096 But if you use stainless steel wire, you can use hooks at the end, to simply reuse the stainless steel wire for years, maybe even decades. It also helps with growing heavier plants, like using one tree to make a tree wall, with the branches spread to the sides in more or less a straight line, but weaving around the support wires, to be able to hold all the weight of those fruits. You can leave the very tip of the tree grow like a bush, to absorb more sunlight, if you want to.

      @@SapioiT yes cotton is great but will stretch and then it will get loose and probably not stay attached on those tiny hooks
      Go with your idea permanent and reusable is good idea

      @@pamelavance648 To be fair, toilet paper is in high proportion plastic, at least where I live. But still, those plastic fibers are also helping to trap dust.
      Did you notice that in the last few years the toilet paper has a lot more trouble actually sinking, and just kind of floats there? My toilet's water tank isn't pressurized, so water doesn't move too fast, and in the last few years the toilet paper started floating, after being used. The water pressure didn't change, because it's not a pressurized tank, and the toilet itself surely didn't change, so the toilet paper must have.
