Some epic things that happened this race:
    - Mc Laren got P1 and P2.
    - Bottas got from P19 to P3.
    - Verstappen and Hamilton crashed together because of bad pit stops.
    - Both Alpha Tauris couldn't take part in the race longer than 5 laps (at their home curcuit).
    - And Russell got into the points again.

The past 4 Italian grand prix have seen records being broken. They are
    1. 2019 = Charles Leclerc (Gives Ferrari a home win since 2010)
    2. 2020 = Pierre Gasly (Gives his and AlphaTarui their first win since Toro Rosso won in 2008)
    3. 2021 = Daniel Riccardo (Gives Mclaren a win in Italy since 2012)
    4. 2022 = Max Verstappen (Gives Red Bull a win in Italy since 2013)

Honestly, I would argue otherwise. If that would've been true, he would've tried harder actually going for the win, considering he had a much faster car. But it seems like he was told to not risk anything further and bring back the points after it became clear that Perez got a penalty.
He did what was expected from a top team driver starting at the back. Drive back to the pack of top teams. Which he just about did, but nothing more.

I really want to make the argument that it weaves the pressure off and then making him a better driver. But the fact that he use a brand new engine still makes me doubt it. It is more logical to say that he gets to be a better driver because he has a new engine rather than being released from the pressure. Perhaps it's a bit of both, but how do you weigh each one? It's annoyingly difficult to judge so I just move on and celebrate McLaren's on merit 1-2.

    • @DragonKhan2000
      @DragonKhan2000 2 года назад +23

Driving a top car from the back of the grid back to where it belongs is kinda normal and expected though. Done so by Hamilton and Verstappen several times as well. This time around, RB, McLaren and Mercedes made up that top pack, so the goal for Bottas was 6th. Which he easily reached as most passes were absolutely no challenge since the speed differences were huge.
Bottas then was "lucky" that the two almost unbeatable title contenders crashed out, gifting him 4th. Add a convenient penalty for the second RB, and you got yourself an easy podium without too much effort. After the penalty for Perez became clear, he didn't even seem to try to challenge for anything higher anymore. Probably had to bring the points home for his team. Considering he's leaving the team, I wish he would've actually TRIED to challenge the front. But alas, he did not.
Mediocre performance imho, at least race Sunday.

Bellisimo Monza you have provided another satisfying podium for the third year running with the end of a long running drought for one of Formula One's iconic teams...
DanRic's victory was also another long hard journey to competitiveness after leaving the comfort zone of Red Bull for the supposedly greener pasture of Renault which though giving him the podium they promised was not enough for the then six-time GP winner... now with McLaren this win will definitely erased any doubts of his abilities with his struggles with the MCL35M... cheers to Lando for being a team player despite missing out on the top step but he has years more for that opportunity to come...

Lando didn't became any slower. He finished 2nd, and only 1.7 seconds behind his teammate. In front of Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull and Aston Martin. That certainly wasn't slow, by any standard. It's just that Ricciardo has finally started to drive. He used to be a really fast driver in 2016 Red Bull. Remember that one race when he lost 40 secs in the pits in Monte Carlo? But he was so much better than LH, that he made up for the lost 40 seconds and almost overtook LH for the first place. That was Ricciardo that I remember. But since then he lost his mojo. I certainly hope that he's back.
