High No that is not what is considered level 5. Level 5 can be reached different ways but I think after 40 years what I consider level 5 is a full complete finish job that has been at least sanded flat with no edges then you thin down the compound (I use USG Plus3) and either roll it on or spray the wall and with a paint roller even it out while someone is knocking it down with a flat trowel or broad knife. Let it dry, then using 150 grit sand paper carefully sand it flat trying to stay above the drywall paper. Not for newbie’s!!

They do it because its cheaper and takes less work. Skimming a smooth wall properly takes quite a bit of skill.

yeah, not having to sand it a dozen fucking times with the finest shit imaginable. You dont see level 5 in residential or commercial unless its higher end or requested, but it looks much better. Most contractors are doing a simple texture and moving on. @@VictorWaag

if you use a hawk , you can also use the top blade of your trowel to wipe edges off , no need for the filling knife with that technique and you can carry more compound , less trips to get compound out of bucket

you have to mix premix mud before you apply it. u dont add water to premix. u can add soap if you want to apply it smoother but adding water makes it a soupy mess .

I done just about 40 years you do a pretty good job knowing when we started, we used to use paper tape carpenters. She knew how to do the framing the stairs and the drywall and tape were you used to use nails for the heads you doing pretty good job.❤
