@@424Recording keep it up! You’ve got a great approach at showing common problems and you have a firm grip on assumptions others are making. Earned my sub easily.

Thanks for this video. Bus routing is maybe the most challenging part of Model 12. I can’t count how often I have read “Monitoring section” on page 15 of the manual.
Thanks, Tracy. I've made extensive notes in the manual and the more I think I understand about this machine, the less it seems like I do. One of these days...
So true. I like the Tascam a lot, if you have a bit of experience with mixers it is very convenient and easy to operate. But the monitor section including the headphone outs left me confused more than once. The main critical issue I have with the otherwise really brilliant Model 12 is that you can't mute the main out and still have the main signal on headphones. This makes it necessary to switch your monitors off, if you just want to listen with headphones. I know that one could use the sub out for the monitors, but if you need the sub for other purposes you're forced to use an addiontal headphone amp or monitor controler or really climb behind your monitors and switch them off.
I for the life of me could not get sound out of the speakers when using the computer as a source. Turned out to be that the sampling rates didn't match. Once I changed the settings to match and rebooted the Tascam, worked like a charm!
Thank you for these. I’ve recently gotten back into recording after a 35 year hiatus and this board is confusing me, so these really help. Would love to see more model 12 video on linking with daw or an Mpc as a hub sequencer. Things like that. Your video finally allowed me to get sound from the headphones lol. 👍🏼
Mike, Watching this video one of the important instructions I didn't see was at what db level do you recommend setting the monitors at. I have read with analog mixers it is Unity and with digital mixers it is negative 18db to a negative 20bd. Perhaps you covered that in one of your other videos that I have yet to watch. Thank you for you work and response.

Hey, so I made a discovery and am happy to report that the headphones does not need solo sends to have sound work through it. The headphones work off of the main fader just like the main monitors. Sound happens simultaneously through the headphones and the mains. If you have all buttons off except for the main sends on the channels you will get sound through the main out and headphones at once. Just unplug your mains if you want headphones only. I think people default to turning down the main fader in order to use the phones. They aren’t separate. Main fader is needed for both.
@@bludhaundrecords you’re welcome! You can also change how the solo button operates and have it reflect what you might be expecting a solo button to do. Just hit Menu the scroll down to Mixer. From there scroll to Solo Mode and switch to “Inplace Solo”. That will make it so you solo tracks as expected.
These videos on the model 12 are very useful, thanks so much for that. A thumbs up for your music too, reminds me of Ramsay Midwood (whose music I love).
My god. I bought this unit yesterday and haven’t delved into it yet. I was planning on something that would put the fun back into recording. This is comical how many redundancies and complications there are for what should be the most basic functions. I’m not hesitating to box this back up tonight and send it back. What a joke. Thanks for the information
Thanks for this - very helpful. The M12 headphone arrangement is mind-blowingly stupid. I come from 424 mkiii world, where things made sense and life was easy. M12 world seems tediously complex and life is vexatious.
I agree with everything you said. The solo button will confuse anyone, really. Thank you for the work you have done. Im gonna try to route the submix to the headphone amp and see if that makes things easier.
I always heard you are supposed to start with the gain knob and work down. Set the channel to PFL mode, set gain to about -6db on the meter. Then you bring up your channel fader and finally the main fader
Really well thought out and well done video. Thank you. Just one question, (which may not get answered as this video is 2 years old at this time) is it possible to have the headphone and the speakers live at one time without the use of the Behringer?
Another great video! I have been using my Model 12 in tandem with my Tascam 414 cassette recorder and your videos have helped me to discover some excellent functionality in both machines and home recording in general. I too was confused about the solo buttons on the Model 12 at first. Until I went into the mixer section on the main menu and discovered that you can assign the solo buttons to function the traditional way (one track playing alone) Or, assign it to AFL/PFL. I didn’t really know how AFL worked until watching this video. I have been using the sub out to go into my 414 and using that as a head phone amp. That or just not turning the monitors on when using the main mix to headphones. Thanks again for the fun videos!
I'm glad it was helpful, Aaron. Tbh, I'm still confused about the Solo bus! I need to do more reading and experimenting. I definitely have them set to AFL. My big thing is needing to mute the monitors when listening back on the headphones, so your 414 solution is brilliant. I'm doing something similar with the headphone amp through Sub. That's something I should have mentioned in the video: you can still hear the headphones through Main without routing them to Solo bus, but there's no way to mute the monitors if you're tracking with headphones. Like you said, you can always turn the monitors off, but it's not always practical with how I record and mix. I'm definitely going to do a dedicated PFL/AFL video once I wrap my head around it! Cheers and thanks for watching! More to come for sure!
The band I play with uses this board live. Does the recorder need to be on to utilize the auxillary outs? I am trying to solve their monitor situation. Also, they split the main outs by using the sub outs to the subwoofers and the main outs to the main speakers. Is the board designed for this type of setup? Thanks
I've been using the sub outputs for my monitors, my thinking being I don;t want to mess around with the master fader while recording in case it affects the recording. Is that the correct way to use the sub bus?
just had the headphones issue at practice today. i usually use a headphone amp out of the sub, but didnt bring it. i was buggin. this video could not have been more perfectly timed. thanks a ton.

Love your channel! I am interested in getting Model 12...Can I go directly from my guitar to the M12 then into monitors? Does it boost the guitar signal so I can hear it (onboard Preamp) or would I need a preamp pedal to do that?
Amazing Video!!! How do I record while my channel 1 & 2 are being used for monitoring in stereo? I’d like to use those channels to record bass and guitar. I’m on the Model 16
You don't. If those channels are set to PC mode you can't send and receive signal at the same time. An update for the M12 came out that allows to route the monitoring for the stereo channels (9/10 on M12). Check if they did the same for the M16.
Thanks for the detailed video. I thought the SOLO Bus was a mono bus, ok during tracking, but any stereo playback on the MTR or PC return will also be mono. Am I correct?
Thanks for watching. Honestly, I get confused about this and I hope that it isn't confusing in the video. SOLO bus is a mono bus. The one thing I forgot and didn't mention in this video is that you can hear the headphones as well as the monitors on MAIN but the issue is if you want to only hear the headphones, you have to power down your monitors. For my workflow, this doesn't work very well. The benefit of using the SOLO bus (even though it is mono) is that you can have your headphones on a separate bus, independent of MAIN. I should have mentioned in the video that you can also use the headphones on MAIN while the monitors are playing and they will be in stereo (or you can get a headphone amp and use the SUB bus so the headphones are independent). But yeah, SOLO is a mono bus.
@@424Recording Thanks for the reply. Yes, I have the same issue with Headphones tied to the Main. Very annoying. I hope TASCAM can correct this soon, as it's a digital firmware change.
Hi question. My partner and I just bought this and we were wondering what’s the difference between the main output and the aux and sub outputs. Our speakers don’t support XLR only guitar cables.
We love the video. Thank you for posting. We are not getting sound out of our speaker, and I think it's because of what you mentioned about the PFL/AFL light being on. We can't see what you're pressing to disengage that function. What are you pressing? (This is our first time using the Tasc am Model 12 - with Bose L1 speaker). Thank you!
I use a small strip or rock and roll (gaffers) tape and a good Sharpie Mark L/R on the duck tape. Gorilla duct tape will stick to plastics. Couple thoughts. I recently purchased a new Scarlet 2l2 Question here is would we out from the mixer to the Scarlet to the HS5's and Head phones?
Hi, I didn't understand much about the headphones! I work a lot with headphones, and can I use the Tascam with all the options as in normal mode? Daw Control, Rec, Pan, Mute, Fader, everything is taken into account with the headphones?
Hi Thanks for this tutorial...... One question though I have my Korg Kronos hooked up to the Tascam Model 12 and the matter lights are working However, I have to turn up my Keyboard almost all the way to get even the bottom row of the meter lights to light up In your video, your meter lights are almost in the Yellow (6 DB's)..............What am I doing wrong, please I have turned up Compression and gain and master and still the meter lights only go about -30 DB's Are the meter lights only for recordings ?
Hello! What if I am not using the tascam to record on the tascam… I want to use it to record to Logic… do I hook up the studio monitors the same way? Will it play from the computer through the tascam?
YOU are awesome man - Please keep the vids coming. I was wondering if the MODEL 12 can do any cropping or copy and paste and if the screen can show a visual of the tracks as you see on a DAW? Please keep the vids coming I love your vids and these vids r so helpful since I am a new producer and have not worked with DAW's yet. I prefer this hands-on stuff to record and mix my songs. Thanks
On the 24 you cant mix with all the solo buttons pressed as they give u no pan or eq and the headphone nob works fine when using monitors simultaneously, crazy how different these units are,
That is crazy. The 12 probably should have been called the "Neo Model 12" with a different design. There still seems to be a lot of confusion out there between the models. I'd like to check out the 16 or 24 someday and maybe do a comparison of features
@@424Recording yeah that would be a cool thing to do, and yeah definitely i think the 16 and 24 are more similar to each other than the 12, i also wouldn’t mind the 12 just to compare and muck around with, cant really justify the money though lol
@@craighughes-shug6694 Ha! I hear you. That's where I'm at, too. I would do it for the sake of experimentation and getting down to the difference between the units but I have no actual use/need for one so it's hard to justify!
@@424Recording yeah same very hard to justify, if the model 12 had mire options like the dp series with editing and mastering even, then I’d consider it for using along side the 24 but its not different enough that i want to, looking into a 424 for some possible mastering where i want that his and natural break up
I'd like to use this board for live shows. Specifically for running open mics. I'd like to bring music in and out from my laptop between performers. But I want to be able to use my headphones to cue a song without that song coming through the main speakers. Is there a way to do this without having to buy an extra amp to go through sub? Can I send my laptop audio to aux and monitor that way?
How do you connect outboard gear into the Model 12? I have a Warm Audio WA73 EQ and WA 2A Compressor that I want to add individually to my drums, guitar, bass, and vocals. I'm going "AUX output 2" into the EQ and out of Compressor into MIC/LINE channel 9/10. Please let me know if I'm doing it wrong. I'm also using ProTools. Thanks as always!
Hi Mike, I'm trying to move my songs from my 424 to a macbook pro, but I think you can only do this in mono (without an audio interface) just using the headphone input on the laptop. this may be a very stupid question (i'm not technical at all) but is there a way to use the model 12 as an intermediary between the 424 and laptop that would allow me to move the cassette recording to the digital world in stereo? I really don't want to buy an audio interface and was thinking of moving to a model 12 anyway.
Well, the 12 can be used as an interface as well. You could easily bounce your cassette mixes or tracks to the 424, too. Or the simpler solution would be to get a 2 or 4 channel interface for your laptop and bounce that way. So, yeah, either the 12 or another interface would work well, just depends how you want to work and how much you want to spend. Cheers!
Awesome video Mike! I've actually been experimenting with using an analog mixer as an interface for recording into my DAW. More of a hybrid approach but it's really fun. I have done overdriven guitars by running direct in and clipping the gain knob. Very fun stuff! Will have to experiment more. Keep it up man! Excited for your new album.
That sounds cool, Henry! Yeah, I think the hybrid approach is where it's at. There's nothing better than clipping an analog mixer haha. Will do! Thanks! I finally got the tapes and I'm going to be packing them up this weekend! Cheers. P. S. I see you've been working on some new tracks! I'll have to check them out!
before I spend several more hours trying to find this answer, I figured I'd just ask you: Can I not send audio out from my computer via USB on the Model 12? Can I only go from my headphone jack into a channel?
I think I phrased this way wrong. I had my audio out from my computer coming from my headphone jack to channel 7/8, but the jack recently died on me. It’s apparently hundreds of dollars to fix. Did some research and it looks like you just have to switch channels 1/2 to ‘PC’ and that becomes your master out from usb audio. I’m a dingus who doesn’t read manuals.
My LXR main out cables go straight into a Tascam CD burner, everything goes straight to disc (when I get a good sounding mix). I wish I could do more monitoring through speakers before I burn it to disc BUT! my wife would come down to basement telling me to turn it down please. (I need a sound proof room,.. dang it man)
I hear you, bun. I've been wanting a dedicated space of my own for a long time, too. There's many things I want to do but can't due to lack of being able to get loud. How are you monitoring the mixes then? Headphones through the CD burner?
@@424Recording through the CD burner headphone jack, also I'll monitor a mix through stereo amp, everything flat and levels at a good enough volume that it doesn't sound too loud or too low. It would be better to monitor through speakers I know but maybe someday.
@@424Recording I know you got a Digitakt drum machine, I was wandering how you like it now that you've had it awhile? I have been thinking about getting one.
@@676bun It's awesome. It's definitely more of an instrument than a drum machine but it's very useful even used as just a drum machine. It's probably the most exciting piece of gear I've gotten in the past few years (but I also haven't gotten too many new things!) I need to use it more, tbh
Hello I have model 12 I was singing but I don’t know why I can’t hear the music or my voice true the headphones 🎧 can you please tell me what can I do thanks so much
It's a shame that this mixer, after a few months of domestic use, began to malfunction as many as 3 knobs, which among other things have non-removable the external plastic parts (if I pulled harder I have the clear feeling that they would break); in practice they only maintain the frequency they indicate if my hands remain in contact with the knob, otherwise as soon as I leave them, they always return to the flat position. If anyone know what the hell could be the problem, hit up. ah...and it has never suffered accidental damage. Unfortunately I immediately noticed an evident fragility of the components.

Do you have any video shows how to record a song singing on a sd card in a model 12 thanks so much
I recorded some vocals in this video, Douglas. I hope it helps: ruclips.net/video/CXc8Fo-Wv4g/видео.html
Thank you!
thanks for the help! Saved me a bunch of frustration!
What do you have the ct10 tone generator plugged into?
is there any point on having mute and main function in separate buttons?
Is it possible to connect usb monitors via its usb hub or bluetooth pairing for portability? Great video
Thanks! Veeery helpful...!
Really good video !
Hi
Thanks for this tutorial......
One question though
I have my Korg Kronos hooked up to the Tascam Model 12 and the matter lights are working
However, I have to turn up my Keyboard almost all the way to get even the bottom row of the meter lights to light up
In your video, your meter lights are almost in the Yellow (6 DB's)..............What am I doing wrong, please
I have turned up Compression and gain and master and still the meter lights only go about -30 DB's
Are the meter lights only for recordings ?
Thanks
Your video was awesome
@@424Recording yeah same very hard to justify, if the model 12 had mire options like the dp series with editing and mastering even, then I’d consider it for using along side the 24 but its not different enough that i want to, looking into a 424 for some possible mastering where i want that his and natural break up
Exactly. I'd be interested to see if the recordings sound any differently through the different Models, too. 424 ftw!
Five headphone outputs with each having their own mix / levels? Possible?
I'd like to use this board for live shows. Specifically for running open mics. I'd like to bring music in and out from my laptop between performers. But I want to be able to use my headphones to cue a song without that song coming through the main speakers. Is there a way to do this without having to buy an extra amp to go through sub? Can I send my laptop audio to aux and monitor that way?
I've heard that muting issue was fixed in latest firmware
How do you connect outboard gear into the Model 12? I have a Warm Audio WA73 EQ and WA 2A Compressor that I want to add individually to my drums, guitar, bass, and vocals. I'm going "AUX output 2" into the EQ and out of Compressor into MIC/LINE channel 9/10. Please let me know if I'm doing it wrong. I'm also using ProTools. Thanks as always!
Have you tried using the inserts? The only problem is that they're only on channels one and two
@@424Recording Inserts are for when recording live and not during a mixing session. @Alex Cruz Yes, you are doing it correctly.
Oh, gotcha. I thought this question was about recording live and printing the effects to the tracks in real-time
Thanks I just found your video and it was very helpful
Great Video. Thank you for the efforts. Helped a lot. *thumbs up*
Hi Mike, I'm trying to move my songs from my 424 to a macbook pro, but I think you can only do this in mono (without an audio interface) just using the headphone input on the laptop. this may be a very stupid question (i'm not technical at all) but is there a way to use the model 12 as an intermediary between the 424 and laptop that would allow me to move the cassette recording to the digital world in stereo? I really don't want to buy an audio interface and was thinking of moving to a model 12 anyway.
Well, the 12 can be used as an interface as well. You could easily bounce your cassette mixes or tracks to the 424, too. Or the simpler solution would be to get a 2 or 4 channel interface for your laptop and bounce that way. So, yeah, either the 12 or another interface would work well, just depends how you want to work and how much you want to spend. Cheers!
@@424Recording Thanks! Appreciate the response.
Instead of the test tone thing if you have any kind of looper or even a phone or mps player ...
MP3 even ... lol
Outstanding tutorial. Thanks a lot.
Glad it was helpful!
Very informative greatly appreciated.
Thank You 🤙
Very helpful.
Do you have to power each monitor individually?
Yeah. Either that or send out the signal to an amp that powers both speakers
@@424Recording I think me and my power outlets prefer the second option.
@@Mark_Williams300 You could also use a power strip? That's what I've got
@@424Recording I have a rack mounted seven outlet strip. With seven things plugged into it!
Time to get another one I guess!
Thank You for this informations. It helpt me so much couse I didn´t get out a sound of my recordings.
You're very welcome!
I can make it work like u can but I cant get my pc to play through my monitors? Help
Will tascam model 12 work with m1 apple chips?
I don't see why not but I have no way to test it
before I spend several more hours trying to find this answer, I figured I'd just ask you: Can I not send audio out from my computer via USB on the Model 12? Can I only go from my headphone jack into a channel?
pretty sure you can, I think you just have to save and import it to a track, or put it on the SD card and transfer it that way
I think I phrased this way wrong.
@@BounceChord well aren’t we all? lol good luck man
@@lottosales I use the SD card it's easier for me
My LXR main out cables go straight into a Tascam CD burner, everything goes straight to disc (when I get a good sounding mix).
Hey, do what works for you, bun! I'm always a proponent of that!
Thank you
Odd....I use the headphones all the time when I record drums on the Model 16. That's odd that they would've made it different on each.
Yeah, that is odd. This is what Craig was saying, too. There definitely seems to be some stark differences between the 12 and the 16/24...
Thank u
Thanx
Still have no sound. I don't understand. Starting to think I got a bad unit
thank you thank you I thought mine was broken !!
Glad to help!
Where is your sub outs going ?
I have them going to a external tube headphone amp
I’ve depressed everything there is no audio output at all
i heard that yellow cables sound better.
Hello I have model 12 I was singing but I don’t know why I can’t hear the music or my voice true the headphones 🎧 can you please tell me what can I do thanks so much
In this video I do some singing and recording. I hope it helps and good luck! ruclips.net/video/CXc8Fo-Wv4g/видео.html
i HAVE HEADPHONES...THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.
How to connect computer to tascam 424?
Fuuuuuck plug in your speakers. No shit
This model is badly designed. There is no easy way to switch between speakers and cans!
nope
Yes there is ..just use afl and the headphone pots .
@foodstampz I did say "easy".
