Is it worth it to buy a refurbished 3D printer? Refurbished Ender-3 V2 and Ender-5 Plus from Comgrow

  • Welcome back to Aurora Tech Channel. Today, I will test out 2 refurbished Creality printers. Generally, buying refurbished machines can save you around 30% or more.
Previously, I bought 3 refurbished printers from Comgrow to test out other products, including a CR-10S Pro V2 for around $360, and converted it to an OMG direct extruder. The printer was fully functional, with just some cosmetic defects like scratches on the print bed and the paint on the aluminum extrusions, and the shipping boxes were also pretty damaged. Compared to the new one, which was being sold at $599, saving more than 40% was still a pretty good deal. After that, I also bought 2 Ender-3 for $220 and made 2 conveyor belt printer conversion videos with them, and surprisingly, they were literally brand new. Today, we are going to take a look at these 2 refurbished printers: an Ender-3 V2 and an Ender-5 Plus. The retail price of the Ender-5 Plus is around $550. The total cost of these 2 refurbished printers is also $550, which could save around 30%. This means that if they are both in good working condition, the Ender-3 V2 is free. I would like to thank Comgrow for sending them to me to review, and with that, let’s get started.

Maybe in bad condition, but if you know how to fix some common issues of a 3D printer and have spare parts to replace by yourself, that could be an amazing deal:

I buy a lot of unrepaired units and I enjoy tinkering with them, getting them printing well and then reselling them locally. A lot of beginners like the idea of everything being completely setup and ready for them even if the unit is used. Thanks for the weekly videos, You and your brother are very bright with great futures ahead of you.

I've bought 4 from Comgrow, 2 of them were "used returns" from Amazon and were almost in as many pieces as they could be, but were complete. I made it a point to assemble them without any of my spare parts. The other two were "referbs" and other than some misses with the packaging, they were like brand new.
BYW = The Ender 3 ($79) and the Ender 3 V2 ($149) and as soon as I finished putting them together, were off and printing almost 24/7 ever since.

I just bought a refurbished ender 3 s1 pro yesterday. Its truly difficult to believe how much money you can save off of retail price. I believe the unit cost around $500 new and i spent $233. Over half off!!! I cant wait for it to get here. Its my first my printer and i want to use it to print polycast for aluminum casting.

I bought a "refurbished " ebay V2 for $189.00 a few months back. It too looked brand new. I had never used a 3D printer till I bought it. I learned to do so much on this printer that I wouldn't hesitate to buy another refurbished machine.

Every 7 of my 3d-printers had one thing in common: there was something that I had to fix/adjust/rebuild to make it work the way I liked.
From a certain point of view, every printer that is running is a re-furb; either by a vendor or the current owner!
Show of hands: who has NEVER modified their printer in some small way, and it worked perfectly first day?
    Just as I thought...

I've purchased 4 or 5 ender 3 V2's used locally and had the same experience - had to rebuild some of them to make them square and plum, and had to unclear a bad clog on one. After doing that and upgrading to custom firmware they all worked reasonably well (some a little better than others).

I bought an E2 V2 for $139 and a Voxelab Aquila for $89, both returned/refurbished. The V2 had a Y-Axis cable plug smashed. I have spare parts, including cables, so I just changed the plug.
The Aquila was perfect. Almost brand new, but I was told it was a 3D show working display unit.
I have read horror stories about buying this way, but honestly, my experience says that it is the best way to go!

Be aware if buying a "used/amazon return" printer from comgrow; it's a gamble what you get and they don't accept returns. The ender 3 v2 I got was partially destroyed and was loose in the box with zero packing.

Some returns maybe damaged boxes or stock, or buyers remorse. Others maybe people thinking that they got into more than they bargined for as the learning curve is quite steep. God forbid it's a return from a home tinkerer with no mechanical skill who can't intuit or read instructions and overtorques screws and bolts. Lol.

Hi Aurora, Another great video, many thanks for all the work you and your brother put in to help us all. Would you consider producing a video explaining the differences between the plethora of Ender models. It is very confusing and I am not sure which would be the best choice. I am currently thinking about getting a 3D printer. A short while ago before I found your channel I would have probably picked a Prusa, but now am more inclined towards an Ender or the Bamboo Labs Carbon. It is just for hobby use mainly to make small components or to make the parts for RC model aircraft, especially designs from Eclipson. The speed and being fully enclosed of the Bamboo Labs looks very attractive. I am happy to spend more initially to get a unit that will perform better and last me for longer. Richard

Amazon has the Ender 3e for a good price it has upgrades preinstalled saving avout $80-$100.00.
These include silent board 4.2.2, all metal extruder, capricorn tube, glass bed, CR touch auto level. All in all a top notch deal.
I'm currently added/adding all metal Slice copper hot end and heat break, 2nd Z axis w/timing belt, standard magnetic bed, and pei magnetic bed, improve 3 fan setup on hotend, direct extruder mount and moveing it from side to top, stainless compression nut on hotend instead of bodin tube fitting, and 50 watt heater w/ 100ohm 500 degree thermister. That should just about do it.

The Ender-3/Pro/V2 are similar in print quality and hardware, you may also take a look of the Ender-3 S1, it's much easier to put together and print better. For refurbished printers, they just work the same, if you are OK with some cosmetic defects, that's a pretty good deal.

I bought the Ender 2 just after its release and also the CR-10 and Ender 3, at this time I could have been described as a Creality fan boy but that soon changed when I bought an Ender 5 Plus, I noticed much lower build quality and bent rods and a general lack of QA and my friends bought Ender 3's and V2's and the quality was much poorer than my original one, I also dont like Creality, they will continue to release new machines with the inherited faults of the past models instead of fixing them, this has to end at some point or Creality will end!

I sent back an Ender 5 Plus to Amazon that had 4 bent smooth rods 2 bent leadscrews a BL Touch with a cracked circuit board a control board who's USB chip had burnt out due to a failed cooling fan and an aluminium build plate that had what only can be described as a mountain in the centre, the glass build plate teetered and rocked on it.
I feel sorry for anyone who ended up buying this printer, I have since bought another two Ender 5 Plus printers and both came with one bent leadscrew.
