- Friendship with Science is a series of fun conversations with a range of scientists in India about science that is done here but is of course relevant universally, as all good science always is! The conversations will cover fundamental and broad ideas in science -- they will range from atoms to genes, they will go as far out as the sun and come as close to home as making science toys with everyday objects. The conversations will flow across traditional disciplinary boundaries -- they will be about physics, but also biology. They may start in chemistry but meander through mathematics. They will be about how science is done and how scientists think. What excites them? How do they work? Are they really machines that turn coffee into theorems and laws? In short, this series is an invitation to make friendship with science and scientists with a splash of laughter mixed in!
On this episode is the quintessential science buddy, Arvind Gupta. A graduate from IIT Kanpur (1975 batch), Arvind Gupta is an Indian science educator, toy inventor, author, translator and scientist. He has spent tireless decades in his efforts to communicate ideas of science and was decorated with the Padma Shree from the Indian government in 2018. He is a master tinkerer, a captivating storyteller, and is filled with deep passion and excitement to communicate ideas of science, especially to children (of all ages!). More about him and his work can be found at the links below:

Taking the conversation up with Arvind Gupta are Shashi Thutupalli, who may or may not be a scientist and Biswa Kalyan Rath, who is definitely not a comedian!

I am a Professor now, and this guy's show on DD National inspired my journey into research (I watched him when I was 8-12 years old). Loved watching his show on Tarang all morning.
Omg, he was in tarang 😮, I used to watch him on dd 1 too. Damn, he made program videos 😮
This is such a lovely video series! Too much fun!
I would like to suggest Prof. Raghavendra Gadagkar as one of your guests. He is a retired professor from IISc and has studied the ecology and evolution of paper wasps and other social insects for over 3 decades and is a brilliant teacher/science writer.
I remember watching Arvind Gupta Ji's show as a child, performing various fun Science experiments from simple items. It really increased my curiosity and love for Science. Thanks for inviting him on the podcast Biswa!!
Also loving this series, looking forward for more episodes.
Mr Gupta’s TV show on DD not only brought a great interest in science to me as a child, but also shocked me to realise that great science concepts can be understood with simplest of things only with a little bit of imagination. Thank you for giving me wonderful childhood memories.
I can still see the same excitement and joy in Arvind sir's eyes when he is talking about his toys and explaining about them... legendary person
Might be slightly unrelated to this series, but there's some great work done on rural libraries by Uma Mahadevan IAS in Karnataka. Would love to hear perspectives on enabling learning environments from those working in the Government.
“From Concrete to Abstract” needs to be on a T-Shirt. What a line!
+1
As a kid who had only few free tv channels .... His dd national's show was one of my favourite ... I would wait for it ...cry if there was no electricity at specific that time.... He made sundays special..😌
I am just so glad my childhood had him as an inspiration. i was so much inclined to science (now a doctor) and a few years ago i wrote an email to mr arvind expressing my gratitude on convocation. and when i saw his reply because i thought he wouldn't i just thought what a kind gold person he is. Sometimes I feel people like him are real influencers not like women dancing on beats or men trying doing smth stupid. Thankyou for letting us know the true spirit of science a curious mind with questions and to seek truth.
Arvind Gupta. Thanks to this man that I love Physics. Still remember watching him on DD National.
Thanks a lot for bringing this content to life ❤. Please bring more of it 🙏
Arvind Gupta , i remember trying all his videos and used to have so fun with all the fun experiments. man!!! very happy to see him
Men open RUclips, men watch this video, men happy 😃
Thanks Biswa for doing this, waiting for more to come…
He is the professor proton of our times. @biswa this is a very inspiring episode. We usually complain about the education system, and here this guy is taking action to make a difference.
Why was I not introduced to this man and his work during my school time😢
Amazing episode! I remember having the Arvind Gupta book, "little toys" as a child and I have made most of the toys mentioned in it. Nostalgia
Genius Sir. & also What a great listener Biswa is
I vividly remember watching his show on DD Bharti during my childhood. It was a simple yet very captivating show. Arvind Sir is an inspiration in the truest sense.
Love Arvid Gupta so much his energy inspires and ignite my passion towards my vision too. The moment I saw the intro I googled his books, I somehow felt I have encountered this before, to my surprise one of my favourite books as a kid ' Ten Little Fingers' is by him !! The best book ever I enjoy even now
Next level wisdom drop. Thank you for having Arvind on the pod.
Liked the passion Arvind has he can keep demonstrating all day his toys
I love how an IIT guy became a comedian then became a Director and then Became a Scientist again. I believe Biswa is real life Indian version of Jonny Sins. Just wait and see him doing something again totally different soon! 😂❤
He is not scientist, its called science enthusiast or science communicator . Its vast difference. Thats great to see people tuning in for such podcasts. Happy watching 🙂
Arvind Gupta ji inspired me to make small projects which led me to IIT ❤
Nice work Biswa
Arvind Gupta has truly been an inspiration. He has this ability to instill wonder and curiosity in science, while strengthening its position as an everyday part of our lives, as opposed to something that only people in white lab coats with expensive equipments do.. It was amazing seeing him engage children and adults (including our professors) equally with his demonstrations and intriguing questions when he visited St. Stephen's over a decade ago. Saw the same wonder in the eyes of the children we worked with using several of his toys and ideas.
2 adults reliving the best memories of their childhood!
I eagerly wait for these episodes. Great work!
What a beautiful series you are doing❤❤. Thanks man
Thank you for this video
Truly lovely episode...so nostalgic.
Loved it! Absolutely inspiring!
Omg, he was in tarang 😮, I used to watch him on dd 1 too. Damn, he made program videos 😮
Such a great series! Definitely get some folks from Centre for Ecological Science at IISc!!
Thanks Biswa for bringing back my Tarang memories ❤
Thank you for bringing this to us
Loved this ❤
Continue this series!!
Loving the series! Such shows inspire us to think differently about the mundane! I really liked the conversation and hope that people develop thinking from a scientific perspective.
Arvind sir's toys make me happy ❤
Great work Biswa.
lovely episode, and the website is indeed very very well documented. Great find to pass time over summer!
this cannot be true!
Biswa uploaded a video!!??
and this is episode 2!!!!!?????? woooaaaahhh!
This was such an insightful episode and also I really hope many parents watch it and understand the practical approach towards science and learning overall. Thank you Biswa for getting the legendary Arvind Gupta ji!!
What a beautiful brilliant human. The best kind of role model for us ♥️🙏
Thanks for this..Arvind Gupta was an excellent choice !
This is Brilliant Biswa, Keep doing more such episode. For some one who has a kid at home, This is a great lesson in how I can get her curious.
Let make him our education minister ...just amazing
Very insightful and inspiring ! Thankyou biswa for making such videos
This is brilliant content. Please keep them coming!
Oh god biswa !!! This is so good and the last episode was brilliant as well. Just one wish, i hope it would have been in hindi as well so that i could have sent it to several people who can understand that.
I know these videos don't get too many views, but please keep it going
Thanks Bishwa for bringing Arvind Ji on your show. I remember vividly watching him in Tarang on DD back in late 90s. Really used to enjoy the toys we made during it and the creativity it sparkled in us.
Keep doing awesome stuff Biswa 😊😊
@10 mins.. @ Biswa Kalyan
Triangle is so strong ..because for a certain set of edges of a triangle there cannot be another set of angles. Like 5,4,3 can only be a right angle.
I used to watch him on Doordarshan, made some interesting projects for my school's science fair. Thanks arvind sir. You made science fun for us😊
Every time I was stuck in a tricky Geometry question prepping for different competitive exams, I wished so much to quickly make a model and find the length or angle or whatever was 'X'.....Such an inspiring journey and quality content!!! 🙂
Hum first hum first!
You were first, can confirm. Here's a medal 🏅
Chabi kaha hai
Very inspiring specially too see science can be so much fun. I bought a book as a kid called “Magic science tricks” when i was in school and it had these magic tricks which used simple science.
I think it will be nice to bring HC Verma next. It will nicely complement Arvind Gupta's experimental approach with a more theoretical approach by HC Verma. Both are important at different stages of life and both approaches can bring a unique skillset to the arsenal of any future engineer or scientist.
Arvind Gupta ji! 👏🏻
Awesome! Great insights! Will go through his website .. lots to learn..

The magnet and line toy was commercialized in 2000s.
Rail Twirler / Gyro wheel toy
Wonderful series, nice effort to bring science into popular culture. Giving me 'StarTalk' vibes.
Reg, the stability of the triangle discussed right at the beginning - there is another way to look at it - triangle is the only polygon with SSS congruency.
Understanding the concept and watching how it works is more effective than ratta bazi 😅 huge respect to u sir 😊
Does anyone know if Arvind Gupta still conducts these workshops to teach toy-making?
Eddy current + EMF + Circular motion
Best video on internet today.
The best thing on internet ❤
27:46 Professor Athavankar at IDC, IITB used to say that a good toy is something a child can break and reassemble!
Incredible episode kudos🎉 to
Blown my mind
Great toys from Arvind Gupta
Can you share me the books which he told while sharing his ideas
Lovely episode!!
This is just brilliant, so nostalgic 😍
Our childhood ❤
Very interesting talk.

❤❤❤❤ Arvind sir
Thank you biswa
Very nice Biswa bhai. Carry on ❤
Tarang Doordarshan me ek accha kids show tha.
Amazing ❤❤
amazing
Keep rolling...
What are your socks biswa 😭
So beautiful ❤❤
Can u get someone who works on clean energy like fusion
❤
👏👏👏
It feels so much less alienating when Shashi and Biswa try to ask on the concepts of the toys and are going beyond the regular norms of interviews and asking silly questions and making it even more engaging for us. Thanks a lot for coming up with this series and hoping it helps in inculcating a scientific attitude amongst all of us
Men are such simple creatures 😇
For the algorithm ✊🏾
Don't let Mark Rober watch this video
May you please take charge of the conversation instead of Shashi . He is moribund enough to dilute the whole nostalgia and excitement. Distort the tempo itself.
Otherwise this is one of the best things to happen. Thanks Biswa for doing this. This will turn into a cult show for sure.
BAD AUDIO. Kindly get a Pod Casting Mics.
What ever happened to mast admi
Next hc verma sir
Farhan Akhtar voiceover stole the show.

Mera bs ek sawaal hai..ap indian ko sciences sikha rhe. Aur hindi mein bat tak nahi kr skta koi
Hindi nahi chlo koi b aur language...just cause hindi is widely known..english not that much
@@parakh1996 Because Science is taught and understood mostly in English. And it is difficult for everyone to talk in Hindi because not all the guests will know that language.
