I bought the 550, and heard the 450 too. The 450 has fatiguing bass, and totally destroys the trebles and mids. The 550 has more controlled, but also badass deep bass kicks with a brighter soundstage.
1. So if you've plastic in XB550 AP and aluminum in XB450AP it's bad, but not vice versa 2. Boxes are really not of a matter 3. The soft part - "it's better because it's on XB450AP" 4. Padding - "not necessary" - it is: there're short-haired people or no-hair people. Even with hair, some people feel discomfort without it. While the shine on the outside of XB450AP is cool, but nothing essential to the experience In general: the review is biased as there're only words and personal opinion (which is fine), but not a single test of the material quality or the sound. So how to take it serious?
ok first when it comes to headphones you should talk about the quality of the sound more rather than the outlooks and the looks of the 550 is not bad as they made a matte touch to it. Next the cushioning at the band was put there because people tend to hand that part on their neck when they take it off temporarily. They have a R&D department for this matter mate. The 450 is also a good model but everything has its pros and cons. Next time u do a review please try not to be so bias which is really obvious in your video. I bought the 550 yesterday, and my brother has the 450, and you can tell the diference, the 550 are way better in sounnd quality, and I prefer the building quiality aswell
I'm using MDR-XB450AP for regular daily usage its pretty good. And bass is awesome ...As far as concerned sony will always give us the best for music and videos.
I had tested the 450ap and 550ap to decide which to buy last week...Can't deny that 450ap is coming with a cool design on the shiny earcap and sturdy headband feelings even plastic....but the sound, however, Sony did improve the 550ap, to avoid the treble get affected by the deep bass (that's how I can explain through my own experience )....450ap is good but 550 better.......

Sure it could have been better, but he tried to cover a product that all the other RUclipsrs didn't think mattered, so he gets props for that! Now, when it comes down to it, even though they seem the same, they aren't. What matters most is quality & sound. First the xb450. They have an all plastic body, with aluminum caps on the cans (no function, just design) The xb550. Made with plastic, having a textured/wrinkled finish, with the exception of the band being stainless steel. The cushion does serve a purpose, not for comfort, but it allows you to get a better fit. Now the most important thing, soundstage. Both headphones have the same specs, but are tuned differently. Sound is very subjective so what sounds good to you, may not sound best for me. The xb450 offers more dominant Bass, with mids and treble taking a backseat, so they're great for hip hop. The xb550 doesn't have less Bass, but a tighter response, which means it's more accurate. The biggest difference is the mids, and trebles are much more noticeable, so you're getting allot of Bass with more clarity, so this model is great for anything except classical and jazz. Hope this helps clarify anything that might have been missed.

Unlike other makes and models that heavily stress the bass frequencies on headphones like these, these produce a very fine and sharp midrange sound that is perfect for classical music. I listen to Chopin, and Mozart, and they reproduce perfectly.
I've had the 450 for over 5 years until the plug failed, today I bought the 550, and it really sounds the same as the old one (amazing sound) but the looks are better in the 450 than the 550
I really love the 550, does a great job of isolating background noise and provides a really rich base and high notes. It's also discounted now so it's great tech for less, I'm going to get the wh900n for home listening on my Walkman but this one is great on the go.

In my opinion - The 550 has a better headband as in durability. Although I did step on the 440's by accident and nothing happened to them, the 550's have an aluminum headband. I weigh 240 lbs and nothing happened to the 440's!! But I purchase headphones for the sound quality, NOT the durability. And the 450's have MUCH better bass. Highs and mids are the same. If you want MORE bass for MUCH less expensive since the 450's are the old Model, go for the 450's. I hope this answers your question. Let me know and thanks again!

I own mdr xb550 ap the bass is controlled and clarity of sound is good. The headband is made of stainless steel it is their in the specification...bottom line, 450 or 550 it is good...it came from Sony. ..I'm a Sony guy☺
nah and cause its wired but they are nice better sounding then XB950 model if you want clear bass then XB950 but if you want that heavy bass. Get use to it the XB550ap is better
Hi, I think you might not monitor this thread anymore, but based on your review I tried to find the 450APs because I don't care for the cushioned headband, but because they're older, I can't find the ones that look just the ones you have. The ones I find come with a box with big chinese letters in the front. There are quite a few videos of those here on RUclips. Like half the people say those are fake. Or do you think the packaging is just different depending on markets? Thanks.

I would be weary of buying any of these headphones that claim to be, "New". If a company has purchased a close out of these as new they would be in their original packaging. I purchased mine used. And 2 family members did the same. I JUST went on Ebay for you and saw a few used. One in particular from a grant_robertson (521) with 99.1% positive feedback. In fact at any of these formats, you would only hear a difference in HIGH frequencies....not the low frequencies. And they both are IDENTICAL at HIGH frequencies at any format. XB= extra bass, AP= android phone. 550 is higher than 450, and I would assume better quality, and/or bigger drivers. Btw, it would be nice if you could make your videos in another room, or just not when the kids are watching tv 5ft away, because it`s difficult to follow you and not the "action" in the background.. I have the new one and i want to recommend everybody to use this new one, because the sound quality is very high and the bass is really deep. I bought it for 41€ and i'll never regret for it. So this review is really bad I think you have made this video without testing both headphones.

Hi Matt, Thank for watching and your inquiry! Like I explain in the video the frequency response is claimed to be the same on both. Bass low frequency of 3 hz. BUT! What I did to test if this was true as with rock music, there was a noticeable difference. And the reason why this was so important to me is that I needed true 3hz. We technically cannot hear anything below 20hz. But I absolutely can hear the difference between let's say 3 and 15 hz. (The lower the number, the lower the Bass sound). So, to test I went to RUclips and searched for all Bass frequency test. There are many videos playing a bass beat note as heard in old school bass music less all other sounds. This is when I was able to verify that the 450's were absolutely much better and actually produced the 3hz. The 550's absolutely do not. And if they do the bass is like you say, "uncontrolled and not tight". These terms are very subjective as what you mean may not have the same meaning for me. So to try to make this clearer.......With the 450's the Bass hit was far more aggressive hitting "tighter" but at the same time had more "Booooooooom". The 550's did not hit as hard and you can hear that the bass does not hit the lower "booooom" frequency. They both have the same mid and highs that are limited and not as clear as lets say Bose headphones witch are phenomenal. (Thats why they cost over $100 more! lol) But the bass is just as good as bose headphones. And please note that mids also play a huge part in what I think you mean by uncontrolled. When headphones dont reproduce proper mids, your bass reproduction will suffer greatly. The 450's handle both equally to produce what I believe you refer to as, "Tight". I hope this helps!!
Okay. I'm using mdr xb 550 right now. They seem fantastic. The bass is really awesome. I bought them online for Rs 5000 which is 50$ almost. They got delivered to me right now. I ordered them after watching this video.

A MacBook Pro that has a headphone jack contains both input and output sources from one jack just like a mobile phone. Most PC laptops contain a microphone and headphone jack separately And because of that, those will not work. What computer do you have exactly and I can tell you what you have?

Hi, Thanks for the inquiry and for watching! I have used and tested the HD4.20's and most Sennheisers.....and unfortunately, I always have the same experience....NOT happy at all with the sound. Opinions are subjective...but I'll explain I personally like a full rich sound. As if you are sitting in front of 2 huge speakers with 12" woofers, tight and strong mids for snare sounds, and highs that don't pierce into your brain. The Sennheisers, always sound dead and flat. And I believe that is their only intention. Very dull sounding. If you prefer the heaviness of strong but not overpowering Bass and tight mids and subtle highs, GET the 950's and use them without the Bluetooth but the chord. If you must use the BT function they sound better without the Xtended Bass button on. So to answer you specifically.....I absolutely recommend the 550's if you dont want to get the 950. Hope this helps! (Just remember, the 450's are MUCH cheaper and are actually better with Bass response as I indicate in my video)
Hi Thanks for watching. The 5550 sit slightly higher. They added a thicker cushion to give the perception of better quality but its actually lower quality foam and covering. Clearly a cost effective measure. Many companies do this and the consumer perceives the newer model to always be better.

I have the Sony MDR XB450AP, and, they are nice, but they're like, on the headband, they are more opened that they should be, plus when you hang it with your hands the adjustable things just open too!!, but other than that, when you have it on your head it's amazing, the sound from the exterior is almost un hearable if you playing music, but when not, it makes a little differente, I haven't tested the new ones but, why would the new ones have less bass than the older ones? Could be the material used? Aluminum and Plastic? I think they should do a version with only aluminum, by the way, nice video!!

They claim the same frequency response on the specs but that is absolutely false advertisement. Stick with the 450's until a later model is out out for the same price point.
Just saw this comment and I still have my 450s, I also tried the 550s, they sound the same for me, they issolate better but maybe because my earpads are too old, I also opened them one time. Both are nice but 550s headband is better to me.
One On Two Comedy. I've never tried them. But now that I remember the name of the most bass I've ever experienced in a headphone since you're into pure heavy bass....... Anything from JLab. I had a pair but don't remember the model. Check them out.
I have both!! I produce music as a hobby, I spend hours hearing the same sounds of all ranges, over long periods of time. - I prefer the Old version, I was honestly looking to replace them due to damages (my fault) but after comparing them I INSTANTLY noticed 2 things, the new one feels way better but sounds just better than a pair of beats headphones WHICH IS BAD; flat its an unsaturated version of the old version with dull treble and dry bass. - they dont hit nearly as hard either so its not even that the mids are good because the mid bass freq is lacking the most in comparison they are an astonishing 10 DBs quieter than the 450s so now I will have to go return them and go on eBay. 450 all the way. my 150 Dollar I sport (in ears) sound better.

What a terrible review. The new version is definitely better. It has padding for where it would be sitting on your head to provide comfort which is needed after longer periods of wearing them. If that's not a big improvement already, I don't know what is. I'll take that over the "shiny box it comes in". As for the padding being "extremely unnecessary... don't quit your day job mate. Leave the reviewing to people who aren't completely biased. Anyone would think you were a designer of the original or something.
Yes. You MUST get a Sony MDR XB950B1. Best headphones anywhere Bluetooth or non Bluetooth!! Get them on EBay for as low as $40 USD. And get the wire for them to use them non Bluetooth as well. Phenomenal sound!
I have both headphones the xb450 just dead after 7 years from using it and yesterday i bought xb550 and i have a big problem with them when i use them sometimes the screen on my phone press things by itself and the volume turn off by itself too i dont know why but maybe it's just fault from the company-facility ... I am gonna change them or fix them ... By the way now xb450 cost 50€ and xb550 cost 40€ only
Have both, this is how those are: 450s: More mids 550s: Less mids So 550s feel more bassy and 450s more balanced. Other than that, they are exactly the same. Oh yes, 550s has nicer and ticker padding and isolates better.
Both too heavy bass to me. I paid 25 clearance Walmart for the newer ones. Drowns the mids and highs are too overwhelmed by bass. I guess it's not clarity people want today. I do...I'll grab some AT m40x and or m50x. See if any better.

Nice vid, I have the new ones, when I got them on argos they were £25, now they r £40 and the old ones r £24 the new ones broke within about 9-10 months so now this review was just what I needed
After using both of these since 3 years (2 years with 450 and 1 year with 550) i think 450's have better build quality. 550's plastic just broke on my hands, but still 450's stopped working too. Sound quality it's a moot point, it was difficult for me to change from one to the other. Can you guys recommend me a good quality headphones for a similar price?

Go for 550. Bass is more punchy and sound clarity is better than 450. 450's bass tends to get muddy at higher volumes. Hope it helps.

In my opinion - The 550 has a better headband as in durability. Although I did step on the 440's by accident and nothing happened to them, the 550's have an aluminum headband. I weigh 240 lbs and nothing happened to the 440's!! But I purchase headphones for the sound quality, NOT the durability. And the 450's have MUCH better bass. Highs and mids are the same. If you want MORE bass for MUCH less expensive since the 450's are the old Model, go for the 450's. I hope this answers your question. Let me know and thanks again!

I own mdr xb550 ap the bass is controlled and clarity of sound is good. The headband is made of stainless steel it is their in the specification...bottom line, 450 or 550 it is good...it came from Sony. ..I'm a Sony guy☺

Hi, I think you might not monitor this thread anymore, but based on your review I tried to find the 450APs because I don't care for the cushioned headband, but because they're older, I can't find the ones that look just the ones you have. The ones I find come with a box with big chinese letters in the front. There are quite a few videos of those here on RUclips. Like half the people say those are fake. Or do you think the packaging is just different depending on markets? Thanks.

I would be weary of buying any of these headphones that claim to be, "New". If a company has purchased a close out of these as new they would be in their original packaging. I purchased mine used. And 2 family members did the same. I JUST went on Ebay for you and saw a few used. One in particular from a grant_robertson (521) with 99.1% positive feedback. He has them for only $13 plus $4.11 shipping!!! Get them quick. His description sounds very good as well. Good luck. Let me know how it goes for you. Thanks again,.

In fact at any of these formats, you would only hear a difference in HIGH frequencies....not the low frequencies. And they both are IDENTICAL at HIGH frequencies at any format. Heyo! Just curious to know if the sound is similar on both, and are the bass for both as muddy (uncontrolled, not tight) as people say they are?
Hi Matt, Thank for watching and your inquiry! Like I explain in the video the frequency response is claimed to be the same on both. Bass low frequency of 3 hz. BUT! What I did to test if this was true as with rock music, there was a noticeable difference. And the reason why this was so important to me is that I needed true 3hz. We technically cannot hear anything below 20hz. But I absolutely can hear the difference between let's say 3 and 15 hz. (The lower the number, the lower the Bass sound). So, to test I went to RUclips and searched for all Bass frequency test. There are many videos playing a bass beat note as heard in old school bass music less all other sounds. This is when I was able to verify that the 450's were absolutely much better and actually produced the 3hz. The 550's absolutely do not. And if they do the bass is like you say, "uncontrolled and not tight". These terms are very subjective as what you mean may not have the same meaning for me. So to try to make this clearer.......With the 450's the Bass hit was far more aggressive hitting "tighter" but at the same time had more "Booooooooom". The 550's did not hit as hard and you can hear that the bass does not hit the lower "booooom" frequency. They both have the same mid and highs that are limited and not as clear as lets say Bose headphones witch are phenomenal. (Thats why they cost over $100 more! lol) But the bass is just as good as bose headphones. And please note that mids also play a huge part in what I think you mean by uncontrolled. When headphones dont reproduce proper mids, your bass reproduction will suffer greatly. The 450's handle both equally to produce what I believe you refer to as, "Tight". I hope this helps!!

Akash Walia Thanks for watching. It's all about your laptop. If your laptop contains a dual purpose headphone jack then yes. A MacBook Pro that has a headphone jack contains both input and output sources from one jack just like a mobile phone. Most PC laptops contain a microphone and headphone jack separately And because of that, those will not work. What computer do you have exactly and I can tell you what you have?

Hi, Thanks for the inquiry and for watching! I have used and tested the HD4.20's and most Sennheisers.....and unfortunately, I always have the same experience....NOT happy at all with the sound. Opinions are subjective...but I'll explain I personally like a full rich sound. As if you are sitting in front of 2 huge speakers with 12" woofers, tight and strong mids for snare sounds, and highs that don't pierce into your brain. The Sennheisers, always sound dead and flat. And I believe that is their only intention. Very dull sounding. If you prefer the heaviness of strong but not overpowering Bass and tight mids and subtle highs, GET the 950's and use them without the Bluetooth but the chord. If you must use the BT function they sound better without the Xtended Bass button on. So to answer you specifically.....I absolutely recommend the 550's if you dont want to get the 950. Hope this helps! (Just remember, the 450's are MUCH cheaper and are actually better with Bass response as I indicate in my video)

Hi Thanks for watching. The 5550 sit slightly higher. They added a thicker cushion to give the perception of better quality but its actually lower quality foam and covering. Clearly a cost effective measure. Many companies do this and the consumer perceives the newer model to always be better.

I have the Sony MDR XB450AP, and, they are nice, but they're like, on the headband, they are more opened that they should be, plus when you hang it with your hands the adjustable things just open too!!, but other than that, when you have it on your head it's amazing, the sound from the exterior is almost un hearable if you playing music, but when not, it makes a little differente, I haven't tested the new ones but, why would the new ones have less bass than the older ones? Could be the material used? Aluminum and Plastic? I think they should do a version with only aluminum, by the way, nice video!!
Thank you for watching and commenting. Yes the new ones have different drivers....thus why the bass response is not as strong and rich as the 450's. They claim the same frequency response on the specs but that is absolutely false advertisement. Stick with the 450's until a later model is out out for the same price point.

Just saw this comment and I still have my 450s, I also tried the 550s, they sound the same for me, they issolate better but maybe because my earpads are too old, I also opened them one time. Both are nice but 550s headband is better to me.

I have both!! I produce music as a hobby, I spend hours hearing the same sounds of all ranges, over long periods of time. - I prefer the Old version, I was honestly looking to replace them due to damages (my fault) but after comparing them I INSTANTLY noticed 2 things, the new one feels way better but sounds just better than a pair of beats headphones WHICH IS BAD; flat its an unsaturated version of the old version with dull treble and dry bass. - they dont hit nearly as hard either so its not even that the mids are good because the mid bass freq is lacking the most in comparison they are an astonishing 10 DBs quieter than the 450s so now I will have to go return them and go on eBay. 450 all the way. my 150 Dollar I sport (in ears) sound better.

What a terrible review. The new version is definitely better. It has padding for where it would be sitting on your head to provide comfort which is needed after longer periods of wearing them. If that's not a big improvement already, I don't know what is. I'll take that over the "shiny box it comes in". As for the padding being "extremely unnecessary... don't quit your day job mate. Leave the reviewing to people who aren't completely biased. Anyone would think you were a designer of the original or something.

Yes. You MUST get a Sony MDR XB950B1. Best headphones anywhere Bluetooth or non Bluetooth!! Get them on EBay for as low as $40 USD. And get the wire for them to use them non Bluetooth as well. Phenomenal sound!

I am gonna change them or fix them ... By the way now xb450 cost 50€ and xb550 cost 40€ only

Have both, this is how those are:
450s: More mids
550s: Less mids
So 550s feel more bassy and 450s more balanced. Other than that, they are exactly the same. Oh yes, 550s has nicer and ticker padding and isolates better.

Both too heavy bass to me. I paid 25 clearance Walmart for the newer ones. Drowns the mids and highs are too overwhelmed by bass. I guess it's not clarity people want today. I do...I'll grab some AT m40x and or m50x. See if any better.

Ummm the "cheap plastic" its made of an unscratchable material, and the "high metal quality" you will be seeing scratches all over it.
Nice vid, I have the new ones, when I got them on argos they were £25, now they r £40 and the old ones r £24 the new ones broke within about 9-10 months so now this review was just what I needed

After using both of these since 3 years (2 years with 450 and 1 year with 550) i think 450's have better build quality. 550's plastic just broke on my hands, but still 450's stopped working too.
Sound quality it's a moot point, it was difficult for me to change from one to the other.

La banda de aluminio si es mejor en el 550 pero yo compre estos para tener e mejor bajo posible. Y los 450 le gano al los 550 y en sima son mucho más baratos.
