now to figure out how to write a piano piece with these concepts in mind

    • @CronaTheAwper
      @CronaTheAwper 6 лет назад +23

Just write a repetitive melody with every measure's 3rd or 4th beat being a random acciaccatura leading into a random quarter. I feel like that would have this sort of predictable random glitchy feel, although I don't have a piano in front of me to see if that would sound like garbage or not.

Someone made a Melodyne tutorial on creating guitar slides within a piano piece, that could help, unless you're going entirely acoustic.

Man I remember my friend who was really into Aphex Twin and Autechre doing these glitchy beats on his S-1000 in the late 90”s.. Basic drum loops came from a TR-606 and then he added sampled sounds from a broken CD that he played, TV and radio static and synth sounds that were pitched and what have you. it took ages to edit the sounds and the midi. But damn it sounded nice. Now it’s done pretty simple. Time flies.

Can I suggest for those who don't have the space or money for a modular that they delve into the world of Max, specifically Max for Live? I feel like everything you went over is very achievable with a drum rack and Max, with the further flexibility of finely tuning things with the wide range of programmable modules within it. :)

Great video! Love me some glitchy beats. I would also recommend the Glitch VST to those on a budget (The older version 1.3? Is free. It might not be a 100% stable in a modern daw on windows 10, but 99% of the time it works just fine). Just running a simple drum loop through that gives some really awesome results. Also try running some synth stuff or guitar riffs through it, super rad.

One of my proudest patching moments was making an auto-glitch patch on the TC Electronics Fireworx years ago. I can't remember exactly how it worked, but it's a combination of random modulators and intermittent envelopes that drop delay, chorus and reverb in and out of the signal path in a choppy semi-beatsynced way, rapidly modulating the delay parameters to do that classic "buffer loop" glitch effect. It still gets used occasionally when I'm feeling lazy!

Overwhelmed by the mass of wires, then at just about the end of the video I realize that the main module is "just" (???) a beefed up version of the analog arp unit we had back in '87 in the e music class I took in college. That thing had just 8 or so knobs I think. One must have been a clock pulse speed, and the rest were CV up/down offsets. You ran a CV line into it and at your arp came out the output CV line.
We had *nothing* like a CV driven effects unit, though. Just a basic reverb box.
This gear looks like a bit too much for me for just a hobby, but thanks for the show!

My favourite example of balancing predictability and unpredictability is Autechre’s 1994 track “Flutter”.
It was part of their “Anti EP” which was a protest against a new law that was being brought in by the U.K. government to crack down on raves. The new law specifically prohibited gatherings that played music with a “succession of repetitive beats”.
So what did Autechre do? They made a track (“Flutter”) where no two bars share the same rhythmic structure. Genius!
They added a disclaimer, however, that DJs who played their track "have a lawyer and a musicologist present at all times to confirm the non repetitive nature of the music in the event of police harassment."

I wish you wouldve shown a way to do this in ableton alone. While i love the module videos, i dont have one myself and i feel like its an expensive thing to get into. Maybe do a video on cheaper modules or just dont forget about ableton videos. Thank u ily 💛

1:11 ---- 1:19 I was totally convinced that you would start to sing the explanation along with the rhythm.

Nice to see the z8000 getting some love here. It's essential in my rack.

I'm so glad that you are taking more about how to make music. It has been pretty helpful so far

I’d love to get into modular. I already have too much music stuff in my tiny LA apartment but if I ever get a proper studio, there’s going to be some eurorack modules. I’ve messed with some stuff that just sounds fantastic and the possibilities are near endless

I love how hooking up the modules looks way more complicated than actually "writing" the music.

I have a different take on this.
1- Have your anchor beat, something very simple with kick and snare/clap.
2- Write a drum sequence over your base beat, it should always vary (off-beats for instance!), but it doesn't need to go crazy.
3- Sprinkle your sequence with glitchy stuff
4- If desired, change the anchor beat every once in a while to emphasize interesting portions of your song, but be conservative about it unless you're really going Autechre with it
