I need that *NiCkLe*
Did he throw a Nicole on the floor just so he could do that
Katie Dennis now i know why nickelback is calling so. I don't like to look in a dictionary
Time to make music with that sample.
*I WANT A NICKEL*
now to figure out how to write a piano piece with these concepts in mind
Just write a repetitive melody with every measure's 3rd or 4th beat being a random acciaccatura leading into a random quarter. I feel like that would have this sort of predictable random glitchy feel, although I don't have a piano in front of me to see if that would sound like garbage or not.
ruclips.net/video/qXeAeNMTZ9M/видео.html
Too late
It sounds so good.
Jezuz.
Thanks, man.
Someone made a Melodyne tutorial on creating guitar slides within a piano piece, that could help, unless you're going entirely acoustic.
Just get a module and push a button. :P
I had to rewind the intro a few times to get the high five. There’s nothing better than a-oh look, a nickel!
Awkwar d ahaha your comment is fu--oh look, a nickel!
... Nickel!
Nicke!
ni-
You guys ever had macaroni salad?
“Oh look a nickel!” You Better get your Nickel Back.
*_OOOOOOHHHHHHH_*
Look at this graph!
Oooh nice
look at this photogra- oh look a nickel!
Hey.
Never go full random.
Full random works well on granular and graintable synths tho.
Lol... inspired by the movie Tropic Thunder
how random is random?
Perfectly vidible on his chart😂😂
making something sound chaotic is a very deliberate endeavor
Man I remember my friend who was really into Aphex Twin and Autechre doing these glitchy beats on his S-1000 in the late 90”s.. Basic drum loops came from a TR-606 and then he added sampled sounds from a broken CD that he played, TV and radio static and synth sounds that were pitched and what have you. it took ages to edit the sounds and the midi. But damn it sounded nice. Now it’s done pretty simple. Time flies.
unsnails
MrDinovog lol you got pinned
MrDinovog AAAHHH! ITS THE LICH!
Funny how right when i saw this he said it
only came to the comments for the un..snails
Isn't it cool that you can set up a sequence with this and run it forever and always have new music to listen to?
Max Aiello check out Tom cosms automatic glitch machine. It's exactly that.
yesssss, i like applying lots of random lfos to parameters from lots of plugins to make tasty eternal ambient drones
3:19 mirrored Andrew looks like a pineapple
Lol 😂😂
Well this video was totally un-
predictable.

The amount of effort you put into each video and the results you yield make this legitimately one of the greatest channels on RUclips. Wow.
Step 1. Be andrew huang

Thank you - you're so good at teaching stuff about producing and music theory!! I especially like your FM synthesis video - really helpful and welldone
Me: **watches and is very confused with no idea as to what's going on**
Also me: Oh okay. **likes**

thanks for this !
I must apologize because I've been watching your videos for like 2 years and just subscribed... I thought I had done that a long time ago. Jeeez. Just recently getting back into production since I've been gigging live on keys for the last few years, so these videos have been on repeat. Thanks for the gems!
3:19 pineapple man
Hey Andrew, I have been watching ur vids for bout 2 yrs and love them, keep up the great work #NOTIFICATIONSQUAD
You got a Nickleback.

*Wat a handsome boi*
You sir have he ability to shake the heavens above us.
"Predictable and UN....fejurbejur"
6:28 it's been so long since I heard this background music I missed it so muchhhhhhh
You are one of the few youtubers I've been following for a couple years without getting bored of your content! Keep up the good...
SNAILS (got you there)
5:30 the robot -est? sounding Siri
5:28 is there to remind us that we are living in the black mirror version of the 2000's
Modules look like some of the most complex things made by man..
And yet you find a way to make them simple to understand
Something else to experiment is to place random short percussive samples on every 16th note, only they are pitched up 3-4 octaves. Sprinkle in some retriggering and you got something glitchy!
you should do more videos like this! this is super interesting and helpful
This is wicked.
Can I suggest for those who don't have the space or money for a modular that they delve into the world of Max, specifically Max for Live? I feel like everything you went over is very achievable with a drum rack and Max, with the further flexibility of finely tuning things with the wide range of programmable modules within it. :)
Matt Good its funny, I've had Max for Live for about 3 months now and haven't touched it
Don't spend money on things like this!
VCV rack!
VCV rack LETSGO
1. Establish an Anchor 0:54
2. Fills/Beat variations 1:07
3. MicroVariations
4. Unpredictable Sounds
5. Effect Automation, bitcrushing etc
I'm glad Andrew is pretty transparent with his sponsorship. Also, I am glad that his sponsors are not lame like squarespace...oh... wait...
This is a very goo-oh look a nickel
3:18 those are my kinda beeps
sample offset is always a fun way to glitch things out too. delaying an entire beat with every instrument in odd fill-spots can cause some delicious chaos.
case in point soundcloud.com/mandrasigma/it-came-from-another-dimension
5:20 my cat was like: wtf is going on there?
Great video! Love me some glitchy beats. I would also recommend the Glitch VST to those on a budget (The older version 1.3? Is free. It might not be a 100% stable in a modern daw on windows 10, but 99% of the time it works just fine). Just running a simple drum loop through that gives some really awesome results. Also try running some synth stuff or guitar riffs through it, super rad.
Epic Rap Battle:
Roomie vs Andrew vs Dave vs Rob
The mix on this intro is crazy
i’m willing to bet that he either genuinely got distracted by that nickel
OR
he placed the nickel for dramatic effect bc he’s a KING
you wnat to click on video capture
- Hey there’s a nickel! I’m going to get that Nickelback
That sequencer is just... I love that sequencer and I'm having one. I didn't know that existed. What a crazy module.
You caught me off guard with the high five sound effect... Oh hey a nickel!
you should collab with Look Mum No Computer! you guys could make a module!
Nick My Guy this!
+1
do it!
Un... SNAILS
Pepsi had an ad: "Nickel Nickel Nickel Nickel, Trickle Trickle Trickle Trickle."
Random is just a pattern so complex that we cant comprehend. The computer doesn't do anything without thinking
True
2:58 EFF = effect. That is how I choose to interpret it. :D
Just Monika.
Just monika
Just Monika
Just Monika.
Just Natsuki.
Just Monika.
The hi hat fills with the kick and snare reminds me of a breakdown.
I know nothing about music but these videos are oddly fun to watch
I bet you could make great music with anything :-)
Never go full random
Also, Linkin Park's Mr. Hahn was experimenting on glitchy beats using CDJ or DVS gear like in from "Session- Meteora" or "Cure for the itch"
I'm interested in glitch because when you make a glitchy sound work in your song it gives it a whole new level of earcandy. Always evolving yet in pocket
Take a shot everytime he says Unpredictable or Predictable...
Enjoy
Is there a way to let Ableton pick random samples from my sample folders?
That's a cool idea. Make a M4L plug-in and let me know when you do.
Close it eyes lol
Yes with Ableton follow actions and a drumrack
When he played the full random at 1:59 I totally thought of some one going to town popping bubble rap
That snail is so cute at the end.
A fantastic "glitch song" I know is called Gold Pilot. Check it out!
3:18 JoႱ
*YTP vibes*
One of my proudest patching moments was making an auto-glitch patch on the TC Electronics Fireworx years ago. I can't remember exactly how it worked, but it's a combination of random modulators and intermittent envelopes that drop delay, chorus and reverb in and out of the signal path in a choppy semi-beatsynced way, rapidly modulating the delay parameters to do that classic "buffer loop" glitch effect. It still gets used occasionally when I'm feeling lazy!
One long, smartly disguised ad. Can't say I wouldn't do the same if I was in your shoes Andrew.
Aphex Twin approves
Scandisk7 he would, this reminds me of St Michels mont
Autechre does not
this video was very un-fejubajuh
Caleb Packo un-SnAiLs
Overwhelmed by the mass of wires, then at just about the end of the video I realize that the main module is "just" (???) a beefed up version of the analog arp unit we had back in '87 in the e music class I took in college. That thing had just 8 or so knobs I think. One must have been a clock pulse speed, and the rest were CV up/down offsets. You ran a CV line into it and at your arp came out the output CV line.
We had *nothing* like a CV driven effects unit, though. Just a basic reverb box.
This gear looks like a bit too much for me for just a hobby, but thanks for the show!
12 yrs old here. Your videos are super helpful, thank you!
How are you so perfect
Hey Andrew Im a new producer I just started making beats a few weeks ago and I just started a uTube chanel a few days ago. I uploaded some of my beats please if you could give me some tips Id be very thankful🙏🙏
A few days ago I was thinking it would be nice if you could cover that but I never mentioned it anywhere. But here you are, doing it anyways
My favourite example of balancing predictability and unpredictability is Autechre’s 1994 track “Flutter”.
It was part of their “Anti EP” which was a protest against a new law that was being brought in by the U.K. government to crack down on raves. The new law specifically prohibited gatherings that played music with a “succession of repetitive beats”.
So what did Autechre do? They made a track (“Flutter”) where no two bars share the same rhythmic structure. Genius!
They added a disclaimer, however, that DJs who played their track "have a lawyer and a musicologist present at all times to confirm the non repetitive nature of the music in the event of police harassment."
Like Glitchstep?
Like IDM
Yes or Psytrance,Neuro Hop and Breakcore. Breakcore example: Venetian Snares - Gentleman
Don't understand anything
Just kidding I understand my name
That’s was my fav beat you’ve made
Period
I wish you wouldve shown a way to do this in ableton alone. While i love the module videos, i dont have one myself and i feel like its an expensive thing to get into. Maybe do a video on cheaper modules or just dont forget about ableton videos. Thank u ily 💛
Early squaaaaaad
Or you could just make a song and then smash your computer
1:11 ---- 1:19 I was totally convinced that you would start to sing the explanation along with the rhythm.
Nice to see the z8000 getting some love here. It's essential in my rack.
I'm so glad that you are taking more about how to make music. It has been pretty helpful so far
This is my favorite you tube channel I LOVE THIS GUY!!
I’d love to get into modular. I already have too much music stuff in my tiny LA apartment but if I ever get a proper studio, there’s going to be some eurorack modules. I’ve messed with some stuff that just sounds fantastic and the possibilities are near endless
I love how hooking up the modules looks way more complicated than actually "writing" the music.
You are informative, inspiring, humble, and yet somehow you still end up FLEXING
I like what you did at the end there, because I TOTALLY thought you were gonna say "un-PREDICTABLE;" you like- dude. Woah.
Wow! That's fantastic recipie for some sweet-sweet chaos!
This is what i subscribed for
I have a different take on this.
1- Have your anchor beat, something very simple with kick and snare/clap.
2- Write a drum sequence over your base beat, it should always vary (off-beats for instance!), but it doesn't need to go crazy.
3- Sprinkle your sequence with glitchy stuff
4- If desired, change the anchor beat every once in a while to emphasize interesting portions of your song, but be conservative about it unless you're really going Autechre with it
One of your best. I love it when you get into music and sound design theory stuff like this!
I'm laughing soooo hard at the "Un....Snails" part!!
Dang. You're on a roll, Andrew!
