    Wow... what a great reaction, Doug! Really interesting and inspiring. I love how you dug into the Latin, we (incl my brother Gjalt!) really worked hard at this and we were hoping people would take note :-) Thanks again and keep up the good work!

      You are one of the great guys in prog music Arjen, there many but you are one of the finest. I have followed your career and one output after the other you rise the bar higher and higher, in the music itself but also the production quality, the guest musicians, the overall presentation, amazing, amazing!

    I love how Arjen has been able to find such wonderful female singers that are so powerful as soloists, and yet they mesh their vocals harmonically as if they've been a choir together for a generation.
    Live concerts have worked just as well, with Marcela, Irene, Floor, and Anneke, among others. They all love working with him because he's been able to find a texture in them they couldn't find within their own bands.
    Which is perhaps the reasons EVERYBODY who works with Arjen does so - he finds something they had inside them that could never come to the fore anywhere else.
    And Vai's solo here is no exception to that.

    • @RudyBleeker
      @RudyBleeker 2 года назад +2

      As I've heard Arjen say in another interview, along with his request for a solo he send Steve Vai a 3 minute long piece of music. When Steve responded with the question over which part of the music he wanted the solo, Arjen just said "over all of it". It took Steve a long time to respond and Arjen had almost given up hope that he would ever deliver, but boy did he ever!

    Oh yes Hellscore: they are a choir from Israel. They do a cappella covers of metal songs and have appeared on albums by Arjen, Therion, Orphaned Land and others. Noa Gruman is the choir conductor and is the lead singer of Scardust (would classify them as prog/ power/symphonic), and of course Hellscore is always present in their albums. Check both Hellscore and Scardust out, they are worth a listen

    Roy Khan was also the lead singer in Kamelot before Tommy Karevik. The Haunting live from Norway with Simone Simon's is excellent. Irene Jansen is Floor's sister and they have sang together in Ayreon and Star One and After Forever. Who I am from After Forever or Eye of Ra from Ayreon Universe Live. Marcela is in lots of projects. MaYan with Mark Jansen from Epica (Rebirth from Despair) and Gentle Storm (The Storm). Also highly recommend Fate of Man from this album with Brittney from Unleash the Archers.

    Kamelot - Memento Mori
    Roy Khan was their former vocalist, and this song is an epic masterpiece. It's also the conclusion to a 2 album concept based on Goethe's classic literature Faust.
    After 17 years this song only continues to amaze me.
    You definitely need to do Kamelot.

    Regarding the alternate version of the recording: This has nothing to do with the amount of vocalists. It's the way Arjen works. At first he records the tracks with his own vocals, just to make clear how it is supposed to sound, albeit an octave lower in some cases. Then he hires a second vocalist to do the so-called guide vocals. This is the preliminary version, and is meant as a guide for the actual vocalist. The idea is that the guide vocals are already really good, so the actual vocalist is challenged to make it even better. Because the guide vocals were already very good, Arjen decided to release those versions as well.

    Hi Doug :). I'd really love to see your reaction to Fleshgod Apocalypse - they're a symphonic death metal band from Italy. To me, they're the only ones that sound like they're a classically-inspired band, compositionally, rather than just adding orchestra to metal songs. It's as if Wagner became insanely heavy. I'd recommend The Violation, The Fool or pretty much anything from the King album.

      Great suggestions. That is really the golden era of psychedelic and progressive rock. Nothing against this newer prog and this a nice piece of music, but the blending of metal with progressive can be a very tricky (Rainbow did it great, imo). But this prog-metal mix, which dominates a lot of newer progressive rock, is a little frustrating for those of us who prefer the more traditional progressive bands, which evolved out of psychedelic rock. Not heavy metal.

    If the members of the current 'Star One' had wanted to imitate those of 'Luca Turilli's Rhapsody', that's exactly what they would have produced! Take it a step further and the likeness became 'Arjen Anthony Lucassen's Star One'. A strong resemblance which does not hide very obvious differences: the composition lacks creativity (sometimes, one has the impression of “forced” movements) and the orchestral arrangement presents less ambition. Arjen Anthony Lucassen has done so much better with the 'Ayreon' project. That being said, the result is still not uninteresting, it must be honestly recognized. Thank you, Master Helvering.
