For those who fear tearing the colth, you can pull a single thread and cut there instead. Takes a danm sight longer to pull the thread but you will get a clean on grain edge if you are hesitant about tearing.
I was given a length of double width Blackwatch. It was a bit over 9 yards. The person who gave it to me tried using it as a great kilt, they didnt like it. So I cut it in half to make two 4.5yd great kilts and gave one to my brother. I am now waiting for the weather to cool down again (Aussie summer) so I can wear it.
Just found your channel about kilts. I recently inherited my Dad’s kilt and accessories. I would like to wear the kilt… the problem is my Dad was 6’2” and I’m 5’10” and it falls way past my knees. Any suggestions on shortening the kilt. The kilt was made in Scotland by Hugh MacPherson. I can remember going to the Highland Games in NC as a child and my Dad wearing the kilt. That would have been in the early sixties. Any thoughts or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Enjoying your videos and you have a new subscriber.😎
It can be hemmed up from the bottom by a local tailor or seamstress. If they are willing to work on vintage clothing. It doesn't make for as nice of a finished product as a kilt made to the perfect length. Especially with all the pleats stacked up, it can create a bulk at the bottom of your kilt.
Man, the second question I get answered is it's own video! This is great! Thanks for the advice, guys!
Did you do it? If so, how'd it go?
@@ianthekiltmaker It went great! I trusted someone else with the scissors (opted to cut it all the way across)

I have torn 2 inches from a cut end.
Such fussiness is un-Highlander-ish. Just rip it. Rip it good. 😁
