This song is such an accomplishment. It's simple presentation with a single acoustic guitar played plainly, frames a melancholy poem about fleeting companionship, youth, and the fragility of human relationships. Conor Oberst comes to no deep conclusions, voices no outrage or hurt. He points out no injustice. It's unrequired. His story is mostly told in a series comments to his companion "Julie" It's moving impact results from rich images of a drug and alcohol powered adventure in New York City. Enough said. Mr. Oberst has gifted me a song that must be included in my top 20 favorites of all time, and it could still be climbing the charts.
I have a somewhat similar experience to this song in my youth. Although I could always felt it when listening to this song but I could never put it like the way you put it. I’ve screenshot your comment and will reread it when I find myself listening to this song
I feel like Conor Oberst doesn't get the recognition for the lyrical genius he is. He still writes real music, not autotuned, repeated tracks. He is the Bob Dylan of this era and I feel that the majority of the world has yet to experience his and mike mogus' music.
A lot of people were sobbing. I'm sure it sounds ridiculous, but it was pretty heavy at the time. Conor seemed very strung out, I remember thinking he'd probably be dead soon
@@DigitalAsh13 It seems like he’s more or less got his shit together now, although he has been through some heaviness in the last few years, what with his brother and the false sexual-abuse allegations and etc. Obviously you never know what’s going on behind the scenes, but at least to me, things don’t have the feeling they did then
@@ambientexpanse Yesss this is very true also!! Although I still remember seeing a few people attempting to film those like, minute long terrible quality snippets you could get on a flipphone back then, it was just a handful of people scattered throughout the crowd, rather than the entire audience glued to their phone screens, live-streaming or whatever the hell, missing the fucking concert that’s happening RIGHT in FRONT of them…that always bums me out the max, man. And also makes me feel super old: “Damn whippersnappers!! In my day we got INVOLVED in the show” lol
I was there and the lineup on this stage that day was hieroglyphics, atmosphere, death cab for cutie, cursive, bright eyes then flaming lips and the cure played the main stage. Talk about a killer lineup . This was video is actually from the 2004 Coachella the summer before I’m wide awake/digital ash was released in January 2005
Crazy how low key and indie Coachella used to be. This was the beginning of the big wave of festivals as this big cash cow, now they’re almost all identical
Yeah I went the next year, saw Rilo Kiley, The Faint, Arcade Fire, etc. Bright Eyes played again but if I remember right it was mostly the Digital Ash stuff (my favorite) with Nick Zinner on lead guitar. The biggest acts were NIN and New Order, which shows you how much has changed
Man... I try not to think about it too often but, after your listing of that line up I can't help but to feel athe sad nostalgia of "WTF has happened to music!? Summer concerts..?" There are still some great acts today but, they never seem to be on the same lineup for shows. I feel like (for me) that perhaps the last "great year" of album releases for a long time was during the year 2008. What we gonna' do about this problem?? 😧🤔
i showed the part where conor gets interviewed to my english teacher, to prove that you can be a genius and still say 'like' all the time. i love bright eyes
I need to find someone who loves this man's music as much as I do. Someone whom I can cry with and sing along to the songs at the top of our lungs. Someone I can get drunk as hell with while playing this or "Letting of the Happiness" or "Fevers and Mirrors"
"But me im not a gamble you can count on me to split. The love I sell you in the evening by the morning won't exist" ... Some of the best lyrics ever written are in this song.
Can’t believe he was at Coachella, definitely a different experience then vs now. It’s like how warp tour was back in the day...something actually worth going to.
Reading the comments on this makes me want to say a couple things.... A. This is from 2004, NOT 2005 B. There's an interview because this is from the Coachella DVD which showed Coachella sets/interviews/b-footage of the first 10(?) Years of Coachella. C. This was in April of 2004 and Wide Awake didn't come out til January 2005 so most of the crowd had never heard this song before D. Nick Zinner (from yeah yeah yeahs) played guitar for this set E. For the one comment about cursive/Rilo Kiley... (Not that you'll ever see this but I don't feel like replying to you) Cursive played right before this and they covered Milkshake, it was great. Rilo Kiley played same stage but 2005, also great set. Hope this clears some stuff up. Glad people are still listening to/watching this in 2020.
Nick Zinnner played guitar in 05 (I went that year. He may have been here this year as well, but as far as I know, he joined BE for the "Digital Ash"-era band, having played on the record
Sitting here smoking weed and remembering all the good times I had with friends that are no longer with me. Friends I’d listen to this song with. Sending all my love to them and you!
oh i love this song! the lyrics are so great. and i love how the sun's setting as he sings. ALSO, loved his hair, but it was the first time i heard him talk, his voice sounds kinda of funny offstage... haha.
Bright Eyes and the sunset two wonderful things. my two favorite things, and thousands of people got to experience them both at the same time i hope they walked away feeling more alive
this is beautiful. i am in love. every time i listen to his songs and see him sing, i fall in love even more. this is perfect. his lyrics are like poetry. the sky plus Conor plus his voice is beautiful!
This reminds me of Leonard Cohen at the Isle of Wight festival in 1970: just a guy and his guitar playing to an enormous audience, all of whom are positively rapt. Great.
I don't know if it is because of this great video or becaude my mom just opened the back door and let a winter breeze in, but I have goosebumps right now. Combanation of both I think.
its a movie of the coachella music festival that took place in CA a few years back. it has a lot of bands like the flaming lips, oasis, zero 7, and of course Bright Eyes.
it never ceases to amaze me how those with such an appreciation for a lyricist like dylan can not only ignore oberst's lyrics but criticize him for his work and his personality. in his own right he his an awesome songwriter, there is no denying it. you oughta give it a chance, otherwise there are more important things to criticize, and you have no business here
God, i love his wave at the very end. He's so shy. He has every right to be cocky because he's a true musical genius, and yet he's just reserved. Idk, i just love that about him.
he's just one of those people that you see them and it makes you want to go up and just give him a huge hug. and say "cheer up, you're pretty." also, i like the "it's not like fucking friendster" thing.
It's amazing how all of the audience are actually listening. Today everyone would've had their smart phones up and recording; watching the whole performance through the screen of their phones, missing the great performance just in front of them. Sad 😢
I was there. It truly was the last couple of years of 'phoneless' crowds, if you looked carefully enough every now and then you might see a flip phone whipout, but generally between songs--and also not worth it, bc the result was a blurry mess lol. I'm not gonna say it was the best time to come of age going to tons of shows (as I imagine that was earlier)...but I'm sure as hell glad I did it then, and not later, if yer know what I mean. His Digital Ash tour was also spellbinding with an entranced crowd...and Nick Zinner on guitar.
how fitting that the sun should be setting... this is such a beautiful video and Conor sounds amazing. I almost wish there hadn't been that little interview at the start, because it disrupted the flow of it.
He's like, the perfect idie rock star.... beautiful melodies, genius lyrics.. he's even pretty cute too..not like that really matters but it's one less thing for people to bash him on. If your going to spend your time in the spotlight, it does kinda help to be good looking
This is from a Coachella Documentary they produced a couple of years ago, I'm sure you can get it online somewhere. If not I got it when I booked my Tickets for the Festival, as a package. They also sell it in the Merch Tents at the concert.
Look for the Bright Eyes/ Neva Dinova Split "One jug of wine, Two Vessels" its only got about 6 songs on it but they are some of the most heartwarming.
Concerts are no longer a place where if you just want to go and enjoy the music by yourself and feel comfortable. Now its basically a hangout spot for social media pictures and tiktoks and sorry but I don't wanna have to be involved in any of that nothing personal.
i love how this song is viewed by most people as so beautiful but really its just conor talking about his addictions to coke and alcohol. its really kinda sad
my favorite thing about his music, easily, is that he doesn't use a chorus as far as words go. It's the same format that I try to write all my music in.
the sunset and bright eyes playing while at coachella. how amazing is that.
