To me this song is about being in a relationship with a narcissist, whether that’s her mother or her partner, but the idea of constantly trying to please someone just to make them stop, the sarcastic thanking them for the trauma they gave you because it makes you interesting, especially the line “I broke my tooth, it was the worst she ever felt” implying that the other person is making the singer’s pain all about herself.
I haven’t heard this take on Sweet Tooth before and I really do find your interpretation interesting. However, I find it rather implausible that Maya would claim that her mother is a narcissist knowing that she once played this song for Uma to see her reaction (and also i doubt that her management team would let her release a song claiming something like that due to the fact that Uma is also a celebrity). I believe that Maya is indeed talking about her mother but is saying that despite their complicated relationship and not always being on great terms, she will still love her mom unconditionally (and vice versa) and whenever something happens to Maya, the first person she will call is her mother.
Near the end of the song, when she says
“I broke my bone, it was the worst she ever felt”,
I thought that it meant that because this character loves Maya so much, the idea of Maya being in physical pain brings this character emotional pain.
The line “I’ll do whatever to protect her,
I’ll say anything
Just to make her stop” reminds me of when you’re in an argument with a loved one and you will try to do or say anything to make the argument stop. But at the end of the day, no matter the amount of arguing, you’ll always defend this person.
Right after she says;
“I saw a movie everybody hated
In an empty theatre in Duluth
Swear I really loved it
Love is such a better thing to do”,
at first glance this anecdote doesn’t seem very coherent knowing that she’s talking about the movie The Tenant (2020), but the moral of this story is ‘Love is such a better thing to do’ and the only other time she uses the word ‘love’ is in the first line of the song;
“Told my mother that i loved her”.
I find this interesting since it perfectly illustrates having a complicated relationship with someone. Because even though sometimes it’s rough and you have a perfectly valid reason to not love someone, it’s still not the ‘better’ option.
Finally i think that in the line
“I'm grateful for everything you put me through
It's the only reason I'm any good to talk to”
is about learning valuable life lessons through the pain caused by the different aspects of their relationship.
After all you are entitled to your own interpretation and a song means something different for everyone. Your take on this song, although different to mine, may honestly be the most interesting one i’ve read.
I’m pretty sure it’s about uma Thurman and they’re relation ship since the song said “mom” a lot
her music video style is so distinct and genuinely so interesting. i don’t know how to explain it but most of the time i don’t really understand it but i simultaneously do. i can’t tell what it means but her facial expressions, movements and video editing fit every lyric perfectly and paints the song like an art piece instead of having the mv directly show what she’s talking about lyrically. i don’t know if this made sense but she’s so talented and i can’t wait for moss:,)

worst she ever felt" like a relationship where you're hurt/sick and the other person makes it about how bad THEY feel when they hear about it, so you end up comforting them or just feeling invisible
there's also the idea that having trauma is what gives you an interesting personality/creativity (i’m grateful for everything you put me through

I've listened to a few songs and i'm super impressed. Her voice is so soothing and the lyrics are totally hers. They aren't arranged in a way to be too catchy or vague in order to be "poppy" like the music industry usually does. They are unique and artistic like a poet.
