    I was a medical social worker in a hospital setting for 15 years. At first I loved it, but when managed care came in they dissolved the social work dept. and put us under nursing. I really resented that as I was not able to fully utilize my skills and was consigned to photocopying and ordering equipment. I left because I was not going to be dictated to by a nurse and have my role diminished because administration wanted to get rid of "those mouthy women"(social workers) who can stop a discharge if it's not safe. I have an Ivy League degree and a masters in social work from UC Berkeley. I ended up being a therapist but it was not what I wanted to do.

      Wow, sorry to read this. Unfortunately some host settings like hospitals have done this but not all. Is it possible to look into another hospital setting? You may have a better experience in another hospital system or outpatient Medical clinic. Best wishes.

    Great and informative video! I’m currently in college to obtain my Bachelors in Social Work. I see quite a few of my peers going into medical social work after obtaining their masters. This video brought clarity on medical social work as well.

    Blessed to not report to a nurse. Our department director is a LCSW as is our manager and social work lead. I’ve been a LSW/MSW for over 20 years and a hospital/medical SW for 20 years. It is definitely not for the weak and many don’t make it

    Hello ❤, I am currently working for a big hospital organization, I am a financial advisor so I work with everyone. I have been told I should go back to school to become a social worker. What would be your advise or suggestion on where I should start? thank you for the video.

    • @MillennialSocialWorker
      @MillennialSocialWorker  3 года назад +1

      Do you know why you would like to go into social work or why others have stated you should? I think you should first start with your "why", what population you want to work with and go from there.

    Hi there great video! I am a LMSW with no medical experience. I have been a social worker for over 5 years now and all of my experience is as a mental health therapist. Do you have advice on how I could become a medical social worker without a medical background?

    • @MillennialSocialWorker
      @MillennialSocialWorker  2 года назад

      Hi there! There are some similarities in the basic skills needed for both fields of Social Work. I think a Social Work Career Coach or Resume-building Professional will be able to look at your skills and help highlight those that are relevant to Medical Social Work.

      Hey there! that's great. I wish you a successful completion. While gaining experience in your field of interest during your field placement is ideal, it doesnt mean you cant get a job in that field post graduation. Where is your field placement now?

    Can you give me an estimate of how much a Medical Social worker with a MSW degree makes a year and what benefits ( health care, dental, vision etc. )you can get working in a hospital setting?

    • @MillennialSocialWorker
      @MillennialSocialWorker  3 года назад +1

      Hello there. The amount of money you will make as a Medical Social Worker will vary based on skills, years of experience, location etc so I couldn't possibly give you an estimate. I will suggest using a website like www.salary.com to get a customized salary range. If you are employed full-time with an employer, you will likely receive all of the benefits you have mentioned.

    Can i become a medical social worker with just my bsw?

    • @MillennialSocialWorker
      @MillennialSocialWorker  3 года назад +6

      The answer is yes and no. A BSW degree however limits you to only about two medical settings such as extended care facilities (nursing homes) and a few outpatient clinics where you will mostly perform case management duties. If you want to grow in the field and expand your options of medical settings where you could work, I would advise getting your MSW degree if you are able to. A candidate with a MSW degree is preferred over BSW for most medical settings.

    What is the uniform as a medical social work?

    • @MillennialSocialWorker
      @MillennialSocialWorker  3 года назад +6

      That is a good question. It really depends on the company you work for. Some Medical Social Workers wear scrubs, some lab coats, and others business casual.
