Our Journey! How did we get here?
In the winter of 2019 we moved in to our self built van full time to begin living, working and travelling Canada. We quickly fell in love with chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path, living off grid and being self sustaining. We drove our van thousands of miles through various countries-Canada, USA, Mexico & Guatemala. All of which we documented here on our channel, be sure to check that out! After many years on the open road we found ourselves 15 acres of remote woods on the East Coast of Canada where we are building a homestead and renovating our fully off the grid cabin. We are diving into this chapter of our lives in no experience, we're so happy we can bring you all along as we learn to do it all with our own two hands. Thank you for being here with us for cabin life, van life and all the in between!

Axe?? holy cow, was not expecting the wildfire aspect as you all had not mentioned it, it has been devastating for all. My area in Ontario has been impacted by smoke heavily and kids can't play outside. People across Canada have either lost their homes or can't leave home safely, it is a nation wide crisis. We need to stop calling this wildfire season, that is not true, this is climate change and we have to call it what it is, or it will never be addressed properly. You all need to get a minisplit for heat and keep that fire as a back... sell of your incinerator toilet and buy a composter... not just you, we all need to see our own use of fossil fuels as a last resort, not a go to.. you two are miles ahead with your solar system though.. Cheers.

Y’all should buy those fly traps from Home Depot. ( I think it’s by RAID) one of my friends lives on a farm and she put about 10 bags out ( spread them out) Holy moly the bags were full of flies 😳 She keeps buying the bags because the flies are not as bad anymore and they are attracted to something in the bags.

Love the long format. As an Albertan who has been dealing with fires for the last two months with little change I think you showing your emergency preparations are a good thing for everyone to know whether they live in a city or in the woods. Many Albertans have had little to no notice of having to evacuate their homes leaving pets and farm animals behind.

@stormfaith being able to evacuate livestock quickly is often not an option. Where do you evacuate them too? Do you have trailers and trucks to evacuate them all at once? How quickly could you load them all onto that trailer? Sometimes you have only minutes to evacuate.

I live in Sonoma County in Santa Rosa where we had devastating fires. We bought a Minnie Winnie RV and honestly mostly to be able to evacuate in the case of another fire. We have all the stuff ready to go all the time but especially in fire season. Keep gas full like you do and non perishable food and water We always have backpacks with non replaceable belongings ready. Keep our Jackerys charged, meds etc. It is really scary when your area is affected. Thank goodness our neighborhood was spared but just 10 minutes from us lives and homes were lost. You are doing the right thing to be prepared. I am keeping you all in my prayers. Someone posted in a comment here about livestock. We have a very rural area here and livestock was saved wherever possible but when you aren’t expecting a fire it is hard. It was devastating to people who had to run for their lives and leave behind animals. Our fairgrounds and neighboring communities helped out by providing shelter and trailers. In times of disaster lots of good work is done by brave and generous people.

I have been so worried about you four and Tyler and Todd and their little family. My dad, uncle and son, who now lives in Wyoming, were all volunteer fire fighters so when I hear wildfires, I listen very closely. I have been out to visit him when the Hoback fire was happening near Pinedale, Wyoming. It was like driving into a war zone when we drove into their remote little town. Helicopters flying in, filling up, flying towards the fire, all in a field right along the road. I had watched the Canadian news daily, listening to the updates. I was building a floating deck and drawing up plans for my tiny house...which brought all of you to my mind again and again. I have watched you guys from the beginning and at 58 learned how to use a chainsaw, lol. I don't need a four bedroom house for just me and my little dog so I have the plans at the builders and hopefully by next winter I will be in my tiny home. I appreciate all that you do and a long the way teach us all that we can do anything we put our minds to.
This is the first time I've dared to write and I'm sorry it's way too long. Good luck, stay safe and prepared.

That was my worry as well.
Here in Alberta, the fires are very far north, and while they do effect quite a few people it’s not as many in a small province, such as yours. But the smoke has been just unbelievable.
I’m so glad that you were safe, but, being prepared is so important.
this is a good life lesson for anybody that wants to preserve their treasures not just in case of natural disasters, but all the time.
Always assess what is most important in your life and either make copies of it or keep them very safe.

I was an active fire fighter and live in a place called St Andrews, Victoria Australia. At the base of the Kinglake mountains. We experienced, fought, lost so many friends and homes, stock and pets, in what is now called the Black Saturday fires. It was terrifying shocking and like living in an apocalyptic nightmare. As a firey we learnt there is no such thing as fighting fires, we hope to try and send them in different directions. It was a wind change that allows me to still be here to watch you two and tell this short tale.
The Forrest is a beautiful place we have to accept that to enjoy such beauty comes with risks. I am so glad that you and your beautiful puppies are safe. Always have multiple escape routes leave when winds are high and humidity is low. Many people I knew stayed to protect their homes and died, there are many who stayed to protect and survived. ❤

As an Australian who lives in the Blue Mountains in one of the most fire prone areas of the world , I understand all the stressful waiting. I'm sending love and thoughts and I'm glad you are both safe (and the girls). It is indeed a price we pay for living in the middle of a massive forest.
I have been on notice for evacuation many times and i've been evacuated several times over my lifetime - including the 2019 fires which made international news , this fire front was just a few km's from our house. Probably some of the most stressful time in all of that is preping and having stuff ready by the door.
I'm sure many are giving you ideas but i thought i'd my thoughts.
We have an evac kit (LOL in winter the box becomes our black out kit). I pack this fairly early in the fire season. It includes documents of importance.. passports, birth certificates, marriage certificates, land deeds etc. It also includes things we can't replace including things like our wedding album (pre-digital times). Besides what we want to save, the evac kit also includes wool blankets or clothing (wool is quite fire resistant) , hand cranked torch, some water etc. We don't go overboard here because of our fire plan (mentioned below). these are things we'd need in very worst case. This kit varies a lot on your fire plan but you should have the essentials. Your local fire brigade could advise. In many bushfires you either have just minutes notice.. if you are the ignition point on a windy day, through to days and weeks or agonising waiting, preping and tracking. If you are in the situation of only having a few mins then the evac kit is what's gonna go with you as you walk out the door.
Every Australian who lives rural or on the edge of a city area has a fire plan. Every year all fire stations have info nights and drop in times when you can get advice on your plan. The plan can include lots of things but first and foremost it will have a very clear plan for the point you decide to stay or leave and you'll know exactly how to make this choice.
It depends on your comfort level, your fitness, your expertise and skillset, dependants etc. It also factors in enviromental factors like your local topography and what directions you are most vunerable from. The plan is super clear all the way through, you don't want to be working it out in a fire.
An exmample.. a catastrophic fire rated day (we have a daily rating here in australia) ... it will be high temps (maybe in the 40's) and high winds (in the mountains where i live it can gust up in the 70-90km per hour). This condition is general considered... if there is fire, it is unlikely we will be able to stop it.. it will be up to mother nature. So if there was also a fire in area ... i would want to know where (toporgaphy between the fire and me - i live in amongst giant forested canyons ) and wind direction and speed and i would track this.
Depending on how close the fire was .. 5kms, 10km, 20km, 50km (these are the watch zones i set on an app we have here) would mean something different in plan. I'd know to gather stuff together, at a certain safe zone, put it in the car and prep the land at another , and leave now at another. I don't know if Canada has an app and alert system for tracking fires? We do, its not perfect but its a starting point. For us our local firefighters in our community are our best timely info and most communities have a bush fire safety group (on FB or something). You obviously can't rely on having access to online (thats why you have a fire plan) but the information flow is far faster there and very local compared to the official app.
Besides a fire tracking app you also want something like windy for tracking wind speed and direction.
Your fire plan also should include a "shelter in place" plan. We personally have never had to fall back to this part of the plan, but you should have it. Again it depends on your situation. In Australia "Shelter in place" is the alert given when the fire is too close now to be outside. It is now too dangerous to leave. Rural properties have different plans to semi-rural towns.
If you only have one way in and out then that needs to a serious consideration depending on where the fire is and which way the wind is blowing. If you are really pretty remote in deep forest then you have many ways you could loose access out of the area and you need to consider further distances to clear those conditions to get to a safe zone. You'd need to factor that in to your choice when to stay and leave.
If i lived where you do, I would consider putting in a "shelter in place" fire shelter (and i would hope to never use it, but i'd be so thankful if i did need it). With your incredible skillset for building i think you'd probably do something amazing. There a resources far more knowledgable than me out there on how to build these for your area.
In some ways fires, like all of mother nature, brings us closer to the land we live on. We learn our topogrphay, our natural fire breaks (like lakes), and natural fire corridors, we read the land. We learn the topography around us and we learn it in relation to north, south, east and west. We also learn to read the weather. We can recongiste a 20kt wind from the south west when we stand in the garden, and there is something very connecting about that ... there is also plenty about fires that a stressful and horrible, fear inducing and cry worthy. I'm sending love to all for a fire free summer.

I did this for a science project once. If you want to attract lots of bugs to keep them away from you, get a gallon jug. Cut it in half. Put dry aromatic cat food in the bottom half. Line the rest of the insides with fly paper. Cut four finger sized holes in the jug, one of each side. Tape the jug back together. Place the jug(s) away from your living area. Watch the bugs come rolling in. Of course, you might attract more than just bugs where you live, but it will definitely divert the bugs to something more appealing than yourselves. After all, the bugs are just using their senses to find you. Give the bugs something more appealing to go after.

I am a native Californian from Northern California. We know this all too well. 75% of my friends and co-workers lost everything in 2018. I had family members all packed and ready to go. The worst part was that so many of my friends ended up living in old camp trailers and their cars for several years with no air conditioning and where I am from we are talking 110-degree summers. The fires are horrific and terrifying because you have no control over them. They are burning super hot because we don't garden our forests anymore. The underbrush is left to grow as kindling. Glad you are cleaning out your woods.
Always keep a go bag, that is ready to go at a moment's notice. You never know why you might need to have it. Also good, is cash as ATMs may not be working. Fuel in your cars. Think about the things that you can't replace, and figure out a system to make sure you are able to take them with you. Most importantly, every single one of my friends had to drive through walls of fire to get off the mountain. Sometimes you just have to do what you have to do. Keep your chain saw in your case in working condition, and maybe have a second one on hand just in case. Have leashes for the fur babies, because when emergencies like this happen, they don't understand and can run off in the wrong direction or you may not be able to find them in time to get out yourself. Have a plan in place of where you are going to go when you get out. The temporary shelters often don't allow dogs period. So have a plan.

As someone with a prolific raspberry patch here are three tips. 1. go buy some clothesline and use that to string up instead of the jute twine (that will break and decompose over the winter); 2. cut back the dead canes every spring, they're very easy to tell apart from the living ones; 3. these are going to spread like wildfire once they are established, so be prepared to be cutting back raspberry suckers all over that blackfly neighbourhood (you can also dig them up and plant elsewhere or give away).
    Enjoy!!

Hello ladies, so sorry about the devastating wildfires and the effects on people's lives. I often wondered whether you were okay. Grateful that you were not affected. Always a bit worried about your remote location, but also grateful for the peace and tranquility of those lovely evenings you're showing in this longer video. That coming together after a hard day's work and unwinding with your loved one. I miss that.
Here in South Africa, our Western Cape province is experiencing heavier than usual winter downpours and severe damage from stormwater and flooding. Roads swept away, farmland and infrastructure destroyed. People being evacuated from their homes and in many instances losing the little they have. That is when one realises the force of Nature. How fragile we are...
On a lighter note. Never have I ever laughed as much as when I saw Jazz hanging from her pants in that red tractor!

This was an amazing video! We live in New Mexico USA and have experienced more than our share of wildfires. From what I’ve seen on this video, you have been doing exactly what you need to do to prepare for a wildfire. One thing you have available as a last resort is the lake where, if all other escape routes are blocked, you and the dogs can retreat into the water.
One comment that Crystal made was thinning the forest. Absolutely need to do this and limb the trees up 1/3 of their height to prevent a fire from laddering up into the crown of the trees. A key phrase for you is “ defensible space”.
Hang in there ladies, you are doing everything right to prepare yourselves for any future challenges!!

We were evacuated for a month on 30 minutes warning during the CZU Lightning Complex Fire in 2020. Fortunately, we had our bugout bags ready to go and our checklists posted on the fridge so we were able to act, because it's hard to think under the circumstances. Please put "clean out the fridge and freezer" on your checklist -- many of our neighbors didn't, and their fridges were totally gross. We all felt lucky, though, because our friends on the other side of town lost everything they owned except their lives and their children.
If you're told to go, or even if there are evac warnings in your area, GO! You can replace everything as long as you are alive to do it.

As an Aussie I recommend you have a backup to an evacuation plan. So if you are in that worse case scenario and are stuck and can’t get out that you have wool blankets you and wet and take down to your lake to take cover in while the fire front passes. Also a fire safe box you can keep your important things in too. Unfortunately fires are something we all have to get used to in this changing climate 😢

      ps.:
don’t piece spaghetti before cooking! Let them fall in a tall pot of happily boiling water -add salt, just enough for the amount of the spaghetti- by twisting the top of the bunch you want to cook. Both hands on upper part, twist and let go. The bunch will open up like a blooming flower. Let it happily 😉 boil; scoop all the amid foam as it forms, lower the flame and start the timer.
To check if the consistency of the pasta is OK: ‘fish’: (spoon and fork) a couple of spaghetti quickly out of the water, blow on them and gently bite. If ready, drain them quickly from the water, dress in a large hot pan and serve -almost straight away, adding some extra virgin olive oil on top of the “hill”.
      Enjoy 😘

Global warming is no joke and with it comes crazy weather and natural events, some quite devastating. Stay prepared and take care of each other ❤ The longer video format is wonderful - such a nice way to spend the morning. Glad you were able to remove the tree from your garden bed. Also, not sure what types of berries you are growing. I just planted blueberries and raspberries this year and while I knew blueberries require very acidic soil conditions to thrive, I had no idea that raspberries also like acidic soil. I’m using fertilizer specifically made for acid loving plants, like azaleas, blueberries and raspberries - purchased fertilizer from local big box store, sprinkled around base of each plant, watered it in and it’s helped significantly.

Fires are scary. Acting in an emergency situation is scary. Having a list to work through for loading vehicles, prepping to leave and knowing where to go is essential. Most people don't do well under pressure, so following instructions made in better times is best. Having bug out bags ready, all documents and insurances loaded to the cloud and battery operated radios is great. There are websites and apps to help prepare. As an Aussie its a thing we always need to be aware of. Also a 100% wool blanket (or several) can be a life saver. Remember its radiant heat thats a huge enemy. ❤❤❤❤❤

Oh. you guys, I'm SO sorry about the fires. My land in California burned in the Butte Fire back in 2015. Our home survived, barely, thanks to our heroic firefighters. If our house was a cat, it would be down to five lives now! It's nearly burned four times over the years. Sadly, that's just life in the California Sierra Nevada Mountains in these days of increasing heat and drought. My heart hurts that BC, Nova Scotia and other forested areas are now suffering with wildfires. I'm going to share some tips from my experience with wildfire in hopes it might help you or someone else reading.
You two are exactly correct to prepare, prepare, prepare, and stay alert. When you think you've thought of everything, keep your eye out for additional things and actions that could help. Summers sadly are no longer always times when we can let our guard down and relax. I stay alert and ready to assess the situation if I smell smoke or I hear the CalFire planes roar overhead. I hear the aircraft a lot since they are based just south of our property. I'm ready to evac at any time.
You're already on it keeping the vehicles full of gas, good job there, and the functional chainsaw in the truck is good. I'd also recommend:
    - Keeping a full, primed water fire extinguisher in the truck.
    - Truck parked facing outward; make sure it's tuned up, full of oil and coolant, and running reliably.
    - Bandanas in the glove box that you can soak with water to breathe through; smoke is a killer even if the flames don't get you.
    - Always have your bugout bag packed and within easy reach. Three days of clothing and personal items is good, or a little more.
    - Wear cotton clothing and heavy leather boots to evac; don't wear synthetic clothing that can melt and burn you.
    - Don't forget medications if needed.
    - Cash in case the power is out at retailers.
    - Have a ready-to-grab file of documents like car titles, birth certificates, passports, etc.
    - You got the TP, check! Add a small shovel in case wildland potties are necessary.
    - Personal hygiene items often get forgotten; hand sanitizer, feminine care, wet wipes, small towels.
    - You might end up in a hotel, but be at least a little prepared to camp. Hotels can fill up during massive fires.
    - Three days of food and water per person and critter.
    - Flashlights for each person and extra batteries.
    - Don't forget a can opener to get into that canned food!
There are more things you can probably think of. There are lots of excellent checklists you can find online to create a system that works for you two, including prep lists for your house, bugout bag lists, etc.
Oh, another good strategy is to have a multilevel evacuation list posted in your house. Level one is what to do and grab if you have no time to prepare. Level two is for 15 minutes of prep time. Level three is for when you have a half hour or more to prepare. Obviously, the safety of each other and the doggos is paramount. I learned that when I didn't know if I had a house left or not; all I cared about was my hubby being safe.
Regarding social media and news, you're correct that incessant doom scrolling on the situation is not healthy, but it is a matter of finding a balance of keeping sane and still staying up to date on any fire activity in your area. I highly recommend looking for wildfire-specific monitoring apps that give you stats as close to real-time as possible. In our area, I use Watch Duty, Flightradar24, Fires, Windy, CalFire, and a website that shows the growing network of live webcams across California's forests. Find what apps for fire, wind, weather are available for your area and learn to use them skillfully and fast. The Flightradar app is excellent because you can follow the paths of firefighting aircraft in real time; wherever they are circling is exactly where the fire is.
Twitter can be another helpful resource. In general it is a cesspool and I avoid it, but it can be helpful in providing some real-time reports from people at the scene of an emergency. Use hashtags to search for the event or area you need info on. You can also search for and follow accounts that report on wildfires, such as your local fire department.
Facebook can also help. In my area, we have a Facebook Fire and Police monitoring group that is excellent. Local volunteers monitor scanners and update the group on emergencies. There are also FB pages for our local fire departments, police, and other first responder groups. You might find something like that in your area.
Again, my heart goes out to you and all those impacted by wildfire. Lastly, I'll say be gentle with yourselves and each other. That level of stress and worry can cause serious mental stress; I personally have fire PTSD from the terrifying things I've been through. I am sending you lots of love and wishes for your beautiful home and forest to remain unscathed.

For the water storage, put a couple of drops of bleach in each container. There are guidelines for exactly how much, but within those guidelines it is still safe to drink and will keep it from growing mold. For the future, because you are off grid, you could consider a sprinkler system for the house, solar panels, and battery building.

Hi ladies, I don't normally post, but watch you each Monday morning ( in Australia) and wanted to empathise with you and your fellow Canadians about the wild fires. In 2019 we had wild fires in our back yard all up and down the east coast of Australia and literally across the back of our house. We lost millions of animals, including koalas, kangaroos and many many more beautiful native animals. If it wasnt for the skill and dedication of our wonderful fire fighters and helicopter pilots dumping water on the fires, our home like many others would have been burnt to the ground. Unfortunately some fiefighters lost their lives helping protect other peoples' properties. 😢
It breaks my heart to think that so many people have gone through and are still going through what we and my fellow Australians have so recently been through. It is so important to have a fire plan and I'm so glad you girls are taking measures to make an escape plan. Thinking of you all and when you come across a firefighter, give them a hug and tell them what wonderful people they are. We are forever in their debt.
    Stay safe Canada ❤

Hi girls, I've been watching you for years. I'm 69 years old and once again I want to say how proud I am of you. My husband would have loved you too. He believed women should know all the things you're learning. My daughter is in her 40's and is amazing like you. She bought an old house in New Mexico and has been remodeling it. So I've been seeing her progress with yours....... I love it all.
Your home is amazing be proud of everything you've done. You have both grown in knowledge, skills, and self confidence a bunch and it is heartwarming to see.
I didn't realize you lived anywhere near where you have to worry about the fire. For what it's worth I am keeping you all in my prayers.

Love the long format. You ladies have worked so hard to establish your homestead, but please remember that the only thing that is truly important is your safety and that of Bella & Izzy. EVERYTHING else can be replaced. Do make sure that you tank up all of your vehicles & take your property/homeowners insurance as well as all of your vehicles & equipment policies. The only thing that is important is keeping your heads & hearts in the game. We love you both & well will pray for your continued safety.

I love long videos from you all. I’m always disappointed when any video ends, no matter the length. I’m so sorry for all those affected by the wildfires in your area, but immensely grateful that you all, and all of your beautiful property and possessions are safe.

Keep that area around the cabin clear, extend your fire gap and get the cabin clad in a fire proof material. So glad you got the roof done already. You really do need to protect yourself from an ember storm.
This is only going to get worse in future years im afraid you're doing great just keep up the hard work and you'll smash it.

I know its a shame to lose the tree cover, but you might consider cutting a more aggressive fire break around your cabin and the property in general. its really the only thing that can stop a fire in its tracks if it does come close to you all. that and roof sprinkers saved a lot of homes in our area when we were hit a few years back (interior BC). sending you all safe wishes and that no fire comes near you or your fam!

I hope you ladies remain safe and avoid those wildfires. I personally had worked and fought two forest fires and never want to be in one ever again. And I don’t want to see nice people like you two have to be in one.

I live in New York and the smoke from those fires literally made the air unbreathable for about 2 weeks, people here wore dbl sometimes triple masks and even that wasn't enough. But we muddled through it and was helped others with this. But this is something you ladies should consider, have a Go-Bag which is a bag that is filled with essentials which you can literally grab and go, during times of emergency have your pickup packed with...water, your Go-Bags as each should have a bag, 1 bag just with clothing everyone's clothing "what doesn't fit doesn't go" a cooler with non-perishable food and if you must bring any sort of documents just bring your passports and any other "valuable" documents put them on a flashdrive, put $$ in each bag, finally grab your doggies and run. I realize that this list may seem overwhelming but since you guys live so remotely you have to "over do it slightly" and please have a map as GPS may not always be practical and multiple if possible venue of escape. Ladies I love you so please stay healthy and safe.

Don't underestimate the importance of a fire road to act as a fire break around you property. Maintaining a good fire break in the forest can make all the difference in a wildfire situation. The best part is that you already have to tools to do this. Its just time and sweat equity.

Garden advice for you. Consider having your soil tested to see what fertilizer your plants actually need. Saves money on fertiliser, and helps you get your plant what they need!

It's a matter of "when", not "if" that fires will come to your section. I hope you are planning ways to defend your homestead. I'm glad that you have a drone to spot an approaching fire, and that you have an evacuation plan.

I am so happy to hear your safe, and don't mind the long format for something so critical. Generally, I prefer To-Be-Continued smaller drops more frequently than longer format. But you do you, we all will watch anyways.

Since 2017, California has experienced a devastating drought that caused the death of many trees in forests, followed by huge fires that destroyed whole towns with around 100 deaths. Many people had to escape with fire in front, rear and sides of roads. Terrifying. Some never made it out. Some were trapped in their garages, with loss of power, they did not know how to manually open the garage door. Most of the fires were caused either by lightning strikes or downed power lines from wind damage. You really do need to organize your possessions and important documents so that these can be taken with you if evacuating.
People living in and around rural forested areas have had their homeowner's insurance cancelled and their only option is to buy bare-bones expensive fire insurance through the state insurance fund. All homeowner insurance policies are now poised to be much more expensive to renew in 2023.
