One minor technical point. Alcohol is also a macronutrient, and it has 7 calories per gram. Sometimes calorie tracking apps only count the carbs, fat, and protein, and undercount the calories in alcoholic beverages.

It helps people usually to understand that carbs can be separated from one another by using the glycemic index.
All carbs turn to sugar-glycogen in the body, but different carb sources do it at different rates because of how complex they are for the body to break down.
Refined sugar is at the top of this index. Things like brown rice are much lower.
Therefore you can use this index to decide what kind of carb to use in different situations. As the e gentlemen said, it would make no sense to have a brown rice drink between periods while playing a hockey game. You body will not break them down until long after the game. Therefore sugar-although discouraged in regular life-can be an effective means to provide energy on a very short term basis.
