Simply review the public figures. The year prior to the introduction of mass vaccination for polio, 1952, there were 57,700 recorded cases of polio in the US. Of these, 3,200 died and 21,000 were left disabled. In 2022, the first case of polio in the US was recorded, after 32 yrs totally free of the disease. Herd immunity for polio requires 85 percent of children to be vaccinated. For measles, that percentage is 95 percent.

Nobody who was a schoolkid or parent in the 1950's can forget the horror that was polio--the leg-braces, the "iron lungs." The vaccine was truly a miraculous gift to humanity.

Here in Australia childhood vaccines are mandated for preschool and school attendance. And they are free to the parent. I was born in 1949 and my mother had polio in the early 1950s, fortunately only a mild case but a friend of hers was left paraplegic by it. We had several kids with leg braces at my school. I was about 8 or 9 when the first polio vaccine came out. We all lined up at school to get it. I was terrified, and ironically my father was the town's doctor sticking needles into our arms. My sister became an anti-vaxxer as an adult and refused vaccines to her son. He nearly died at age 12 or 13 from measles. I can never understand why people want to go back to some imagined 'natural' era as if before vaccines were available nobody ever got sick.

I'm in my 60s and my brother contracted polio in the last Australian polio outbreak, back in the 1960s, when he was 3. He lost the use of his legs completely for a while but, luckily, he regained most of the use of them and was left with only a slightly weakened left leg. It could have been so much worse.
I went to school with quite a few kids, mostly a bit older than me but some the same age, who were left with paralysed limbs, many needing to wear braces on their legs or with one or two withered arms, and it wasn't uncommon to see adults with the same. One of my then adult neighbours was left paraplegic from having polio in the 1920s. Polio is also the very unwanted gift that can keep on giving too - many people suffer from Post Polio Syndrome where, even people who seemed to make full recoveries can find themselves with paralysis, problems swallowing or breathing etc years or decades later.

You were born in 1949. The polio virus was discovered in 1908. The measles, polio, long covid, have overlapping symptoms. During the covid pandemic, ventilators were in high demand. The Iron lungs were used to treat polio patients. The ventilators and the iron lungs worked to help the patients breathe.

If these plans carry through, not only will many be impacted with lifelong consequences or lifetime disability, but there may be other changes. These vaccines may no longer be covered by medicaid, medicare, Obamacare (if that still stays around) depending on how rules change. Or private insurance may or may not cover them or be required to. Those that have the financial resources will still be able to get these for themselves and children by paying out of pocket. But the other groups may not be able to afford them out of pocket so will not have the protections the vaccines can provide. And leg braces and iron lungs will come back into style for the more vunerable citizens.

Just a small warning from The Netherlands. We have a religious group that refuses vaccinations on religious grounds. For some reason about every 25 years a polio outbreak will happen within that group that kills quite a few children and also older people that never had a vaccine. Others it invalidates for life with all the expenses and misery it brings and that is despite an overall very high herd immunity and high level of medical science and doctors and no denials of care.
Now I personally do not wish to curtail anyone's religious freedom, though have some problem with parents endangering their children that way for a believe those kids may or may not hold for later, but at least they have a good reason not to vaccinate in their eyes. For anyone else though to endanger your kid in the hope enough others will vaccinate their kids, so yours will be protected seems insane and how lower that trusts becomes, the more outbreaks you will have over time. It is a given, not a hypothetical chance unfortunately and it is also contagious when you are adult and run into a carrier of the virus while not vaccinated even when there is so called herd immunity, just your chances are better with herd immunity you will not. As those outbreaks in my own country proves herd immunity is not absolute unfortunately.
Especially if want to allow the freedom to not vaccinate for certain religious people, the need for the rest of us to be vaccinated gets only bigger to protect those people as well. If ask why I care about those people? Well I do not know, I just do not get off on suffering and others misfortune.

I feel sorry for the few children with congenital weak immune systems and who are unable to take live vaccines and/or react poorly to vaccines. These individuals rely on the rest of us to get vaccinated to make these diseases nonexistent. With vaccine deniers in control of public health, that protection will be greatly weakened as many opt out of vaccination.

Yep, that's 2 of my young grandsons (5 and 7 years old) who inherited a serious genetic condition that leaves them with a weak immune system. Last March, the 5-year-old was diagnosed with it, went through a bone marrow transplant, and until next August has to be sheltered from contagious diseases. That's when he can get his childhood shots all over again, regain his immunity, and be around other people. (Like, start school, now a year late.) Will he be able to get those shots? How much will it help him without the herd immunity of other kids getting their shots, say, if ignorant MAGAs exercise their FREEDOM not to vaccinate their kids?
Psycho Donnie's reign of terror is already a f*cking nightmare for my family. These two kids may not survive their childhood.
