Hamilton And Russell FURIOUS At Mercedes After Belgian GP DISASTER!

  • Sunday’s Belgian Grand Prix was one to remember for a number of reasons. For Red Bull, it was a disappointing race with Max Verstappen unable to make the progress Red Bull thought he should have and Sergio Perez falling from the front row to 8th place. For McLaren, they were left wondering what could have been if Lando Norris had got a better start. For Mercedes, it was an incredible drive by George Russell to cross the line in first place, securing a one two finish. His disqualification was all the more painful for how bold his strategy call had been to secure the race win. After the race, Lewis Hamilton was furious with his team for his race strategy. Today, I’ll check out the fallout at Mercedes after the Belgian Grand Prix and why both drivers are angry at their team, so don’t go anywhere.

I have seen this mentioned in a few places with people saying that Mercedes tried to trick the FIA or alleging foul play but this rumour is based on a miss understanding of the documents released by the FIA in regards to the disqualification and a misunderstanding of parc ferme rules. There is an excellent Reddit post I have linked below explaining it. Thank you for mentioning that though because I was really considering doing so!

so let me understand this, hamilton started p3 he overtook both perez and leclerc and made sure he leads and controls the race, imagine for a second if leclerc and perez were both ahead of mercedes and leclerc instead wanted to go one one stop and then made it work like russell would russell have been able to even finish on the podium? i don't think so because piastri or leclerc or perez they all pitted because lewis was ahead of them and he had pitted so practically lewis gave russell a chance to be on one stop as others could not be on one stop, so now explain it to me how was it not a completely unfair call from mercedes to let russell win it when they knew the drs is really short to overtake and hamilton's tires delta would have been offset because of russell's tire-wake? when it comes to hamilton his haters just never accept when something is wrong

Yes, drivers have done it before, but in this era of acute tire management and pit stop strategy, keeping news like this from your leading driver is almost an insult. I think that when everyone cools down, Lewis will realise that his team actually did the right thing by him and avoided a disqualification like George. For Russell, I would say they simply failed to factor in a one stop strategy, so they should have added an approx. extra 2 KG of fuel if they were only doing a one stop strategy and that would have to be computer modelled, however it seems they exceeded the manufacturer's tyre wear recommendation anyway, so go figure that one. It was thus never viable. It didn't cost Russell the win, as he would never have won on a two stop going on race pace. However it cost him probably second place. As was mentioned however, there was no warm down lap and that was the lynch pin for the one stop strategy not working this time around, without extra fuel to compensate that reduced weight.

The rubber of the tires weighs~10Kgs each tire, 10,000 grams, and GR was off by 375g per tire at the end of the race. If you estimate that GR did an extra 15 laps, and would have been precisely at weight without those 15 laps, then the issue is 25g per tire per lap, which is a tiny amount of rubber, and given the size of the rubber marbles you see at the edge of the track entirely plausible. So GR changed the plan and Mercedes f'ed up by not telling him about this. Also others have noted that Spa is one of the few tracks where you can't pick up marbles on your post race lap, which is a standard game drivers play to add weight at the end of the GP.

One does question if he just lost 1.5 kg of rubber on that strategy, that they did not factor in to the car weight? Apparently an average, an F1 car can lose about 1 to 1.5 kg of rubber per set of tires during a race. Since F1 cars typically change tires 1-3 times during a race, the total rubber loss can range from around 3 to 6 kg over the course of a race. This includes the rubber that is worn off the tires and deposited as "marbles" on the track. Some drivers are apparently asked to pick up marbles, by driving around the edges of the track, if they are deemed to be underweight by the team. Seems like the one stop strategy was an impromptu decision, so it seems like they didn't factor in the lower weight that could result in at the end of the race. Seems like a fundamental team strategy error that simply got overlooked until too late.

If Mercedes planned the strategy well there was a better chance that George could have pitted on time and overtook a few cars for a better position as Piastri did, since Mercedes had the pace last weekend. Now because of greediness they have to pay the price with been disqualified, which was not necessary 🙄

Total let down by the Merc team. Not George’s fault tho. He said the car was improving lap after lap, getting more grip and feeling good. His job is to drive the car. His team should have advised him to change tires. It’s possible they still could take taken P1 and P2. They’re to blame.

I find it ridiculous that the final weight of the degraded tire counts as a violation for minimum weight limits post-race. That has nothing to do with the car the team brought to the track and considering it is a spec part equal to everyone it has everything to do with the final condition it was brought across the line with.

I'm a casual but it's blindingly clear to understand, that (on the tyres) 1 stop is more detrimental than a 2 stop because of the Vulnerability to be caugtht later on ( less rubber, less grip, LESS WEIGHT!!!). If the lack of weight is down to a 1 stop, then it should be waved, as all the teams admit that they CHEAT normally by adding weight 'AFTER THE RACE' by doing extra laps driving over the debris to put weight back on the car. Which means that many, many cars are underweight during racing! A one stop car = will way less, what's the shock & surprise???

But then they removed 2.5 liters of fuel and weighed it again so now it is too light. But that second weight is not the condition the car was in when it crossed the finish line. In all my 50+ years of racing from karts on up, you weigh the car in the state it existed when it crossed the finish then test fuel, tires, whatever. But I have never seen any car weighed again after component testing. If that is the normal F1 post race inspection procedure that is just plain stupid! Where can I go to read the actual FI rules on this?
