FYI: I did germinate few date seeds and i covered it with a paper towel or kitchen paper serviettes & placed them on a lid of a random tub and kept it open but watered it when ever it was drying ensuring it isnt dry at all but wet at all times and took me almost same amount of days for sprouts to appear.

No need to put them in the refrigerator to place at room temperature with stones from organic dates almost 100% successful with germination time of + or - 2 weeks. Medjool, Deglet Nour, Mazafati, Ajwa on a seed from Saharan or Sahelian countries, cold stratification is not necessary.

the date palm is a beneficial plant, we are on a family palm grove project in CHAD the difficulty of the fact that it is a dioecious plant the differentiation can only be done during the first flowering at about 7 to 8 years on average. from seeds there are about 50% male and female. multiplication from suckers or plant in vitro has the advantage of time savings but the disadvantage of the lack of genes renewed over several decades of artificial multiplication. A method of analysis using leaf fragments on three-leaf seedlings has been developed and gives excellent results. as the proportion is one male plant to fertilize 40 to 50 female plants, this helps a lot with the composition and arrangement of the female males in the plantation.

I have a few seedlings and they were opened up (so that the leaves were tall and flat). However, some of them have sort of shrunk, they are still as tall but are now much thinner, they are no longer flat, it is like it has scrunched up and they are the shape of a skewer (so rounded and tall). I wish I could add a photo. Please let me know if you have advice. I don't know if it is under watering, over watering, they don't have enough nutrients etc?

Hello, how is your small palm tree doing now?
I skipped the fridge part. I simply put some date seeds in a glass of luke warm water for a few days and then approx. 1.5 cm deep into a pot of light soil mix. 2 months from there I have 2 leaves, like in your video, and another one smaller. I am so excited!!😅
I was hoping to learn how it went on, if you had a success and how it looks now.

    • @xXShmendanXx
      @xXShmendanXx 2 года назад +10

It is true that male plants cannot grow fruits. Females can grow fruits, but only if they are pollinated by the pollen of the males. You cannot tell if they are male or female until they start flowering, which can take years for some plants.

Growing date palms from seeds is easy but just like all fruiting trees you don't really know what variety of dates you're going to get and it might become a superior or inferior variety but unlike most plants we can't graft a cultivar on to it so it's a good idea to just propagat the shoots that stem from the parent tree

I thought it took them like 20 years to fruit and they were like 30 to 50 feet tall.
So if I have a male tree. can
I keep planting females so they stay under 15 foot.
Lot easier to harvest 15 foot or less then 50 foot.
Or is there a way to keep them about 15 foot?
Also I get winds like Saudi does.
Matter of fact. where I live is like Saudi.
Dry hot windy cold at times in winter. And when it rains it heavy and extremely rare.

Mine just germinated today 😃 after 1 month. Hopefully, now when I plant it in a pot, it can grow big and strong
a pro tip to make germination more successful is to soak them in room temp water for 48 hours before placing in the tissue paper. It helps a lot.
update: My date palm has grown a very tall leaf and is growing smaller second leaves. It has developed a thicker trunk too! It really pays off to see the growth

Why do i get so many different versions of germinating date palm seeds? I just watched 3 that said to keep the seeds at 70 degrees F. Here it shows them sprouting in the refrigerator. I'm so confused.

I am confused as well. To add to the confusion the seed shop I bought the seeds from said it needs both cold and hot treatment and that germination can take up to a full year. Maybe there are different varieties of dates?
