  • Yes, I was an actor in the Lords Of Chaos film, the black metal biopic from director Jonas Akerlund - and when I saw the film, I hated the result! Watch the video for the full story of how I came to find myself on a Budapest film set, acting as myself alongside Rory Culkin who plays Mayhem leader Euronymous so brilliantly, and how I felt about the whole experience.

Hey there! Here's the place to tell me your thoughts on the movie Lords Of Chaos, and/or the special features on the Arrow Blu-ray.
An aside: as of July 2019, I need to buy a new desktop PC, to enable me to edit the videos for this channel much faster. The slooooow editing process currently eats into my writing time, which means the channel won't remain viable without this hardware upgrade. I waited a long time to see the movie, I read your original interview with Euronymous in Kerrang magazine and the follow up stories about the murders etc. Personally Ioved the movie ,it was everything I hoped it would be. Rory culkins performance was breathtaking. The film was funny, shocking and also moving ( notably when Euronymous was pleading for his life ).I like the arrow blu ray but I was hoping for more of a deluxe kind of packaging I think the movie deserves. At the very least a slip cover. Still great though. Thought your interview was great as you were in the movie too.

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the movie. One thing I wish I'd said in the above video, is that Rory Culkin's performance is great in Lords Of Chaos. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to put that right here. :)

I remember reading your Black Metal Story in Kerrang! as a 20 year old in 1993 and was totally horrified that this was ACTUALLY HAPPENING and not an invention of some Hollywood horror screenwriter. I was one of those people who was still clinging to the remnants of hair metal at the time and wanted my Rock and Metal music to be fun and about having a good time. As soon as your article came out, things definitely changed. Some people I knew, many of whom had never listened to anything heavier than Firehouse thought what Varg and others were doing was cool and started to fully embrace Black Metal. Others, like me, was sickened by their actions and wanted nothing to do with Black Metal or ANYONE who associated themselves with it. Not only did your article brilliantly highlight these actions in Norway, but it caused a storm in the metal community in the UK. People who were friends one Friday were not speaking to each other the next depending on their views on what was happening. It was a story they needed to be told and thank you for doing so. I still have that edition somewhere in my parent’s attic.

Me: “He’s talking to me again!”
My partner: “He said golem, not Golmen.”
I saw Lords of Chaos at the Bergen International Film Festival last year. I was absolutely baffled by the American youngsters pretending to be Norwegians (and Rory Culkin as Øystein Aarseth struggling to pronounce his own name) and the fact that Bergen was always shown in perfect sunlight (!!). Your cameo, however, did not seem weird at all, in fact I thought it was a very nice, interesting touch! 👍

Suuuuuuuuper late to the party, but I really enjoyed Lords of Chaos. Was it 100% accurate? No. But Rory Culkin, Jack Kilmer and Emory Cohen gave great performances, and Jonas Ackerlund was incredibly meticulous in re-creating so many moments based on famous photographs from the time. I didn't realise you were playing yourself; but I think the fact Jonas asked you to participate is a testament to his own sense of authenticity. And I think you do yourself a disservice, you're clearly a method actor who's so dedicated to their art that you spent YEARS working as a music journalist in order to really understand the role. ;-D
