    As a born and breed New Yorker almost everything you said about New York was incorrect ... Manhattan is very different from everywhere else in NY , you can definitely cross over to the other platform without paying ,there are a lot of stations that do have the times of the next trains as well, and it all can be tracked by an app in real time . Most homes have here washing machines but unless it’s a condo you do have a public laundry room. It’s extremely packed like no room to during rush hour or at any time of the day where people aren’t at work in the city Each borough(Manhattans ,Queens,Brooklyn,Bronx.Staten Island) are all vastly different from each other. I do agree with the whole metro card thing not being able to pay without one, but they take months to expire and you just trade them in for free when they do, with whatever money you have on it ... Literally a million more things I could tell you about NY that you haven’t experienced, you really have to live here for a bit , it’s not a place you can just stay for a week to get the full experience

Please I implore you to research beforehand what your talking about in order to not offend/degrade a great place of promise and of prosperity where various cultures clash in an ethic and racial pot of rich diversity with new ideas, lovely food, and amazing traditions.

      Juneilys Miranda NY just go at a different speed, a speed of purpose and integrity of intensity and of promise but because of that they shouldn't be judged or called "trash", ironically you yourself are being rude by using such terminology. Please don't judge people by the actions of the few but by the many. There are kind people here, people who care about others, who give food to a homeless kid who can't afford it who give a place of shelter where one has no place to go. Their nice and compassionate and social and multifaceted, their good people and I don't think it's appropriate to tarnish that reputation through misinformed and hurtful social constructs known as stereotypes.

    NYC subways have recently been converting all their stations to have the train arrival times. Many of the subway systems are original, and therefore could not support the technology at first to track trains, but we are slowly making our way. We are also converting to a new MetroCard system. Most metro stops have boards with times on them, the cards at plastic not paper, some stations places to cross over you just have to know which stops have it (usually the people announcing will say when you can switch trains), and google maps is a great way to track trains, type in where you want to go and click the metro directions, it tells you where the closest station is that takes you where you need to go, it tell you which one get on, the time is leaves the station, how many stops you stay on for, and also walking directions to the stations and where to go after to reach that place. It’s very nice and easy to use, I got the hang of New York pretty well after a days and could get around really well without maps as the streets are just numbers in order.

    Your New York experience is one interesting thing! Joel, if you wanna live in Chelsea you better bring the stacks!! The average Chelsea apartment is around $2,200 monthly, and just so you know, most New York City apartments don't come with a washer and dryer; there may be one in the basement of the building, but rarely in your unit unless you live in a newer, swanky high rise. Also, a lot of New York City Apartment buildings are pre-war, and very old; before washers and dryers were even a thing. So the space, electrical, venting, (necessary for the dryer) and water sources are very expensive for developers to install, and would make for higher rental costs for the tenant.

      2200 is cheap as chips compared to Chelsea in London! For a decent place you're looking at least 2000 sterling, but for anywhere with a bit of space, upwards of 3000!

    Wow, you guys are really mistaken about the relative sizes of NY and London.
    The area of London is 607 square miles. The area of the five NY boroughs is 303 square miles, about half the size of London. If you look on Google maps you can see why. Measured North-South NY and London are about the same at 34 miles. I am using the M25 to define the outer border of London. However, measured East-West it is a very different story. London's area is roughly circular, so it is more or less the same distance to the M25 from the center of London regardless of which direction you go. However, NY is MUCH larger in the North/South axis than it is on the East/West axis (this is from west Manhattan to JFK airport in Queens). This distance is only about 17 miles.
    My guess is that NY just SEEMED bigger because it was less familiar.

    • @joed4928

      That's just the city of NY itself which can't be compared to Greater London. Greater London would have to be compared to the statistical NY metropolitan area, which is the largest urban land mass in the world at nearly 4,500 square miles.

    • @tlhuffman
      @tlhuffman 6 лет назад +13

      The "NY metropolitan area" is also usually referred to as the Tri-State area. This includes Long Island and large parts of New Jersey and Connecticut. However, that is surely not what Joel and Leah were referring to. They never even went to Connecticut. There is no controversy about how to define NY City. It is the 5 boroughs. That's it. When people refer to "London" in common parlance that generally means greater London, which includes a single Mayor of London, a single Metropolitan Police District, and Heathrow airport. It does not generally refer to the ancient, tiny city of London, which forms the financial district. If "London" meant only the City of London, then "London" would exclude Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, Hyde Park, everything south of the Thames, etc.

    • @joed4928
      @joed4928 6 лет назад +3

      Greater London is just an annexation of outer suburban and rural London suburbs to create a centralized form of gov't that's easier to manage. It's really just the UK's equivalent to the NY metropolitan area. The only thing is the NY metropolitan area's outlying communities remained individual communities governing themselves therefore there is no Greater NY mayor, etc. But Greater NY itself is the largest urban land mass in the world, and that's why it feels much larger than London overall.

      Well take a second about what you're asking people to do here. To completely give up their own lives, friends, apartments and everything to live for months out of time in a foreign country just to provide entertainment for you. I know that's not what you meant when you typed it, but these are real people with real lives and pets and friends and favorite restaurants and families that they like to visit so that really is an unrealistic request. It's probably been hard on them to do this six-week thing, even though I think they're doing RUclips full time now. However, I do support visiting more real American places but you can't do it for months at a time that's just unrealistic. But I think you can get a good flavor of a city or town in a week, and that hopefully it's something they might do in the future.

NY is The largest city in America so can you imagine how much it cost to make updates to subways? Its lots of red tape an bureaucracy thus, very few updates in 50 years.

    Updating the subway system is a huge issue a lot of the local politicians run against. Just to correct a few things:
    1. A lot of subway stations do have electronic boards but not all of them.
    2. You mostly don't have to get out of stations and pay again if you make a mistake but there are some stations where that does happen.
    3. Yes, New York stations are soooo dirty.

    Yeah all New Yorkers grumble about the NYC subway. What struck me about the London subway is how many of them come during rush hour! I missed a train once in London and the next one came in literally a minute... That would never happen in New York-- it's just a product of an outdated system that we use in NYC. Unfortunately, the MTA doesn't have the money to upgrade a lot of the stations-- there are just too many in NYC. It is a project they are undertaking though. I love how you guys gripe about the flimsy metro cards-- the biggest mark of a tourist is one who is stuck at the turnstiles because they don't know how to swipe it properly lol.
    Lol I love how people told you about safety in NYC. NYC is very, very safe now! I would not have any qualms about walking about in many areas, especially in Manhattan. Brooklyn itself has also become very gentrified and is very safe as well.
    And you guys finally sang for us!! Even though you had adamantly told me no when I asked in a previous video!! ;)

      NYC kept its ticket prices artificially low to help democratise the infrastructure and enable the poor, in a winning example of pluralism. However it has now suffered from a good decade of lack of investment and is starting to crumble. London on the other hand charges the world's highest transport fees (equivalent to Concorde prices per km), though gives free travel to kids, teenagers and seniors. It has however been swindled for decades by contracting firms that pretend to upgrade the network and has a similar financial black hole as NYC, hence the high pricing. In short London forces the people to pay for arguably one of the best transport networks in the world (the real legends would be Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong, Singapore, Seoul, Madrid), when it works, as in reality its plagued by breakdowns, closures, overcrowding and overheating though the majority of journeys are fine (the vast Bank-Monument station for example, capacity 100,000, closes every few days due to overcrowding). Meanwhile NYC doesn't force its people to pay, even supplements them, but that too has negative effects. The jury's out on which one's better a fate. The cheap one where you get shambolic management and aesthetics but a modicum of functionality as what you pay for, or the expensive, corrupt one where you get so-so service, a better environment and a modicum of functionality with the majority of your money going to fatcats.

      The problem is MTA (the organization the runs the subway) is a state run agency, so its a constant battle with the rest of New York State for funding, and digging through the extra layer of bureaucracy, and the rest of New York State is a little resentful of how much attention/money NYC gets. Were it city or regionally run, I'd think folks in NYC would be much more willing to charge themselves for upgrades since everyone has first hand experience with using the system every day.

    Come to New York for a couple of months to get the real experience, I recommend Staying in Harlem so you can travel more to get to common places like Times Square, the Oculus, Flatbush and more.. you’ll be guaranteed a real experience. Also just tell the guy in the booth to give you a free swipe bc you got on the wrong side of the train and he or she will let you go through. We have Metro Cards instead of all the fancy stuff you spoke of bc ppl in Ny are smart and can scam their way through stuff like that. Every single station shows you the train times you just didn’t know where it was bc sometimes it’s blocked, you went on the touristy side so you didn’t meet the rude ppl,you can have your own washer and dryer if you live in a brownstone or condo/pent house, if not your building has their own laundry room or you just walk to laundry which shouldn’t be much since you walk at least 16,000 steps a day. Yes we do cook home food where do you think all the thanksgiving food is cooked the kitchen. Our kitchens are small but we work with what we have. If not we just go to the corner store and get a hero a roll a chopped cheese chicken over rice or w.e with a Arizona. Or we could order Chinese food or get fast food somewhere. But just know we can do both cook home food and order food cuz we nice like dat. I agree with the trains being dirty but if that’s an issue try the bus next time wayyy cleaner. I’m just saying this to educate you guys cuz deadass everything you said was incorrect except the whole trains being dirty dilemma and that’s not cool bc you are making my city I was born and raised in look unclean and bad and that’s not the case. Please don’t take this as a hate comment bc I love you guys but after seeing this I just needed to spit some facts bc this was incorrect from my whole 13 years of living here. But still much love 💕 just needed y’all to know this was way off

    I've never been to London, but I've been to Seoul, and I ADORED their subway system! Everything is always on time, they're fairly clean, and if you make a mistake, you don't even have to leave the station. Just traverse to the other side of the station--all in the same underground area--and everything is Gucci. I spent a month there, and it was just so easy to get everywhere. They also have reloadable what they call T-Money cards. As far as I know, people mostly use it for transports (including cabs and busses), but you can also use them for some convenience stores and similar places. It's just a quick scan, like just tap your card on the reader and go through. It's amazing! Public transit in the States is balls... The majority drive cars, so our governments, state or federal, just don't invest in it. It's a conspiracy, I think, for oil and gas companies, but that's just speculation. Probably.

      An addendum as I get further in your video-at the train stations here in Chicago we DO have the touchless system in place-you just wave your prepaid entrance card in front of the sensor pad to open the little entry gate. Also, we have electronic signs that tell when the next train is coming and announcements in case you are blind. We also have cute little field mice 🐁 that make there way into the stations for warmth,but alas, we can have rats as big as cats. Did you know there were no rats in the America’s until the Europeans accidentally brought them on their boats? They ran down the tie ropes onto the land and it was game over. Also, I have often thought that you both have a very Latin look. Joel,it is your brown eyes and brown hair. I used to live in Spain, and you very easily could pass as Spanish. Have you ever had one of those ancestry DNA tests done? That is something you could do on one of your shows! I know Lea’s family is from Greece, but I don’t believe any of us is pure any one group. I think it would interesting for her to see her background as well!

    Regarding the pace, I think if you traveled during peak times, it can feel a bit like sensory overload. NYC folks will swing either from being very kind and engage in casual conversation; or the opposite, crisp, a touch rude, and comfortable to share their opinions. Land wise London is actually 150 square miles larger then Manhattan (which doesn't include the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens & Long Island). There are certain parts of NYC that can feel a bit spacious, and other parts that will feel like people are on top of each other.

    I grew up in NYC, but no longer live there. I miss NYC. I found some of what Joel and Lia said odd. Obviously, they're not from there. I've missed my stops a few times in my life. But I've never had to leave the station and pay to come back in. You just keep going to a larger station, get out the train, up the stairs, across the station, then back down to the platform and take the next train, going back to the stop you missed. On the A-train, there are local and express trains/stops. You just take the express then local, or take a local to an express. As a life long NYer, I learned to sleep in the train, and wake at the right time, when going to work or school. Now, no matter where I am, if I have to wait for any length of time, I can close my eyes, take a nap, and wake just in time to go.

    Come to San Francisco!! You can purchase a clipper card, upload $ for multiple days, and you can use it everywhere...for all public transport...subway, buses, train, the ferry all take them. And it’s a swipe card. No paper, or cards you have to slide to get to the platform, and you do NOT have to pay twice if you went the wrong way. Just take the stairs and proceed to the other platform. You don’t have to exit and reenter. Super easy. And there are tons of maps and signs, electric signs showing incoming trains with multiple times of when the next train or bus is coming. And people are friendly to ensure you get on the correct platform and train. Californians are friendly. Come to North California.
    And if you don’t like public transit, there are lots of walkers and bicyclist. SF feels like quite a large city, but surprisingly it’s only 7x7 miles across. So you can technically walk everywhere if you’re not in a hurry.

      And all the bloody time in the world! It's definitely good for health but sometimes you have to be somewhere before you have to be somewhere else and during those times jump on a bus and give yourself back that time, no matter how rich you are you can't buy back those hours getting from A to B, but you can always get that Fitness that evening on the treadmill while watching the TV or something so it doesn't have to be one or the other. You can be efficient with your travel and get your exercise in in a more efficient way. I would not spend two hours to walk one place, spend some time there and spend 2 hours walking back home you've spent your whole day, you could have spent more time with your friends or gotten home earlier. Personal preference I guess!

So you could make that in a much shorter time, time to a post outside and then spend the two hours you would have spent walking actually enjoying the pub or Saloon or doing business in town rather than just moseying along a long long road. Like if you ride the 6 train and want to get off at 103 street but miss your stop, ride to 96 street (you don't have to swipe your card again) and transfer to the same train going the opposite direction.

      In the vast reaches of the Midwest between the Appalachians and the Rockies nobody says "Twenty Eighteen".
      We don't tend to abbreviate unnecessarily and speak in a slightly more coherent form of American English then you might find on the coasts with much less of the heavy regional accents found in the Northeast and South, so we're perfectly happy saying the words two thousand eighteen to ensure that we are understood and are not quoting a football score or something.

If miss the Roosevelt Ave stop, i get off at the Jamaica stop and literally two steps to the other side. You just need to know which trains connect side by side
    Edit: there are signs for how long the train gets there, least around where I go for the F or E train and the 7. maybe not in other spots? but that how is for queens and long island city

    There are electronic boards with the arrival of the next train. There are maps on each platform and on each train. Granted, at some stations, if you make a mistake, you have to pay another fare, but that's at a few stations. You can usually get out and walk up and over to the other side. The subway is usually the quickest way to get around NYC.

  • @chicagog19

    I know the video is about NYC/London, but I hope you don’t get the idea that all the subway systems are like that in the US. In Chicago, we have a card called the Ventra card that works like your Oyster card. Our machines accept contactless payment cards as well as Apple Pay, Samsung pay, etc. Our platforms have timetables and LCD televisions that give updates about the subway system, such as delays. And if you make a mistake, you don’t have to pay twice.

  • @marieceravolo6517
    @marieceravolo6517 6 лет назад +14

    Pay twice?? Wtf? I’ve lived in New York all 28 years of my life and I never had to pay twice if I made a mistake. There’s either an underground or overpass, or you can simply transfer for free to another train at a stop to get you back on the right track. If you accidentally exit the platform then you can simply tell an employee and they will likely let you in for free. The subway is 24/7, one of if not the only metro in the world that is. Some subways have the digital boards that tell you what train is next, but we don’t need them because trains come so frequently, as little as 1-2 minutes during rush hour.
    The subways are dirty except the newer ones yeah I agree but that’s a charm I guess lolol how do you not have ac on your train? That’s so bad haha I would suffer.

    I love that the London tube doesn't smell like piss. I kept my oyster card for when I go back. I was there for about 8 days and figuring out the transit was so easy and straightforward. It was a TON of walking though, which we were not used to. We live in the DFW metroplex and walking that much is just not a thing we can do. I had a kettle growing up that whistled when it was ready. It was my grandma's. Now I have a keurig for hot tea/coffee

      That's been my experience as well, there's always some reason you will need to heat water and my mother always had a kettle on the stove for adding hot water to whatever she was cooking although we didn't use it for tea, it was very convenient rather than needing water while you were cooking and having to find a container filled up at the sink and by that time whatever you were cooking is ruined. It just seems kinda like Common Sense have a kettle of clean water on the stove ready for when you need it. And if that's for tea then so be it. :-)

      One of the best ways of getting an idea of how London is made up from different villages is to take the river bus from Charing Cross Embankment (it's very close to Charing Cross station and Embankment underground) down to Greenwich. It's about six pounds, but it allows you to see a lot of historic sights from the river and is probably faster than the Tube. Greenwich is an old part of London that's packed with beautiful buildings, the National Maritime Museum, the Royal Observatory, a beautiful park and lots of shops and pubs and restaurants.
      On the way back, take the DLR (Docklands Light Railway) from Greenwich to Bank (cost around four pounds) which is a driverless train that takes you through all the modern buildings of London's financial district. It's a bit like a Disneyland train - but with real buildings.
      It's a day trip that's relatively unstressed but gives you a great tour of the east and south-east of London at very little cost.
