  • Being there is a massive shortage of HGV drivers in the UK, I decided to share my 4+ years of experience in truck driving in the UK, to help you in your quest to either learn more about or become a qualified HGV truck driver in the UK.
    In this video I go over what you need to become a driver, who this job would most likely suit, different types of driver roles you can go into, truck driver pay, specifics about the tests you need to pass, and much more!
    Truck driving can be a fantastic career for a lot of people once they get to see what it is actually like so I hope my perspective helps, and if it does consider subscribing and sharing with others who may want to get into the HGV driving field.

    I was a HGV, or as the EU would have it a LGV Class 1 driver for 35 years. In my honest opinion as things are these days I wouldn’t bother. There is no shortage of drivers, but there is a massive shortage of decent employers. Many drivers are doing other work solely because of lousy management throughout the industry. When one considers the rules and regulations, together with all the ridiculous fines one can incur, one would be better off doing something else, in my humble opinion. Drivers get no respect, little or no consideration, and are thoroughly undervalued, the transport industry sucks. 🤬🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧

      Every industry sucks… I’m going to become a HGV driver but quite a lot of you are big babies. My uncle was a HGV driver, he loved it. Also I’ve been an apprentice plumber for the past 2 years, I’ve had no respect, paid between £5-£7.50 an hour and then I was let go because my boss wanted to hire his son as his apprentice. I’ve worked in warehouses where the management talked to me like crap and changed my shifts at the last minute when I’ve already started commuting to work. HGV drivers are definitely not the most disrespected, you get disrespected for sure and yes the planners can cock it all up. But your in a truck all day by yourself, you see grumpy FLT drivers/warehouse staff on your deliveries and then get back in your truck to drive alone. It’s not as bad as you make out

    There was never any 50k jobs unless you count tramping, they have always been there. The money did rise especially in the Midlands and a 28k went up to 32-33k. The media over hyped everything and people decided they wanted to be a HGV driver, then the companies who were paying 35-40k decided to advertise for new passes and then they lowered the rates again as an excuse for inexperience to keep their profits high. IR35 destroyed the industry not a shortage, agencies started to advertise showing wages with holiday pay included to make it look like a great wage - it's a big con, avoid the industry until things change like facilities and respect including working drivers into the ground. If you work for someone where you have to reduce daily rest at least twice a week then find another employer.

    • @jlesterhealthcare6555

      @@manfredschmalbach9023 Hi, I can't understand why the comments are not shown unless removed by the poster or YT? Anyhoo, I got your mail about it being worth it being a HGV. Well, depends on your age and when I say that I mean are you young? Do you want a family? Do you have family? Are you prepared to work a standard 50/60 hr week, early starts, late finishes and prepared to get home when all your mates are getting ready to go the pub? When did you pass your driving test? I'm 52, I moved into driving full time about 12 yrs ago, was an Electrician all my life and simply fed up of the same crap everyday and new regs and qualification costing me a fortune just so I could turn up and do my job that I had done since I was 18 along with the H&S on sites...crazy? I had what they call grandfather rights on my licence so was able to drive 7.5 without any training, did plenty of agency driving, slogged my guts out, less money than I was used to but I was happy, not getting call outs etc... I trained and passed my class 1 in 2016 and loved it and then the IR35 closed my freedom down on the agency route so I had to go PAYE, I get the nicer truck but long hours, things that pee you off will be the 12 yr olds employed to do the route planning, be prepared for a pep talk if you get infringements by someone that doesn't drive a car let alone a lorry, thats the stuff that will get your goat up! So if you are prepared to be married to your job then it's great in all honesty. If you have a Mortgage its one job that you can always find work in so no worries about paying the bills. If you find a place and your happy stick to it and don't listen to the hype in the drivers room on site's about "I get paid this and that" for doing these hours, working for these people..total rubbish! Is it worth it? Yes but avoid the class 1 stuff if you have a young family, like me if they have grown up then go for it 100%. You meet some great guys and help is only a question away if you need it. I've been parked up on bays and helped new drivers reverse their trailers, strapped loads, checks etc....we all look out for each other. Any other questions fire away. cheers for now.

      @@crazy-diamond7683 Thank You for the effort of a detailed answer.
      1) RUclips hides comments following some undisclosed "algorithms". They do it all the time.
      2) I am a German "Gramps rights" driver nearing my sixties these days, was driving exceptional vehicles and loads all over Europe and Asia through my 20ies and 30ies with really great pay, best conditions (including secondary full rights drivers in the following special car to give me breaks), I drove a lot of dimensions in the "police escort only" range, took deliveries of mobile cranes and special equipment vehicles like tunnel machinery "on road" as far as Ulan Bator, Khandahar and Bagdad (before the Bushes started their destroying spree over there, and the Vice Cheney started to steal the oil for Halliburton, of course), had great fun, lived the good live most of the times and was even able to pay off a house and a specialized boatbuilding workshop while doing so. Kept my license alive and valid taking medical tests and all for two decades without using it much besides some yacht transports for my clients/customers only, because of vastly deteriorating payments/wages and red tape going overboard, including export restrictions for a lot of the type of machinery I used to transfer/deliver.
      3) So, I was thinking of the younger, interested adventurous people like I was in my twenties when writing "it's important, RUclips!", because we should tell them frankly: there are a whole lot of better adventurous jobs with a whole lot more money in it than driving lorries, andnext to any other job works with a lot less being permanently screwed and pushed around by an armada of clueless pencil pushing morons putting up red tape to invent "fees" and "taxation" paying for their pension planing only while not being useful or even productive their whole work live long ...
      Cheers mate!

    • @jay-mistry
      @jay-mistry  2 года назад +1

      You should be fine being used to driving buses. But agencies will be good for you to build up some quick experience with, and then what I would do is if you want something more stable just keep applying for multiple different places that you wouldn’t mind working at and just send your CV and call them up immediately and have a chat with the transport manager there and arrange meetings.
      I reckon you shouldn’t have any trouble since you have driving experience in larger vehicles

  • @ciarand2823
    @ciarand2823 5 месяцев назад

    I was a newly qualified driver when this video was uploaded and in the couple of years since I've learned a few things:
    1 there is no such thing as a driver shortage, hasn't been since Eastern European drivers flooded the UK and ireland back in the late 90s early 00s. There's also a lot of people out there with their hgv licence doing other jobs not even using it.
    2 haulage is a cut throat game, every year there's a list of long established family run haulage firms going out of business because there's so much competition undercutting them.
    3 the firms going out of business are usually decent ones that look after their drivers and pay them a decent wage, whereas the massive competitors coming in to take over their work are paying crap wages, which is why they're able to price everyone around them out.
    4 anyone willing to take on a new inexperienced driver is probably desperate, and this usually means they aren't treating their drivers well, bad manners, bad pay, whatever it is will become apparent fairly quickly, taking on new passes is a red flag.
    5 there is no respect among drivers, if you leave your tools or your satnav or your wallet laying in the truck parked in the yard over the weekend, don't expect it to be there Monday morning. If you're in the back of the trailer make sure your cab is locked or some absoloute chancer will be in your cab seeing what they can nick.
    6 there is no solidarity between drivers, if someone parked behind you in the services witnesses your curtains being slashed and your load being stolen at 2am don't expect anyone to beep a horn or wake you up.

      It's not only long hours, there are unpaid hours when You can not drive but have to stay in the truck, either for not leaving the thing alone or for simply being too far from anywhere You could go, be it a girlfriend, a friend, a pension ..... They do not pay You for being away for three weeks in a month.
      I did transfers/deliveries of heavy vehicles (mobile cranes mostly) and special transports (overwide, overlong, overload) for twenty years on and off but quit once they started to offer payments so ridiculous I couldn't even fly home anymore but had to use trains for two, three or more days in a row from adventurous places all over Europe and Asia, or wait (on my own costs) for another transfer from somewhere near the backwater hick sticks I stranded last time. Worst thing was: There in deed _were_ drivers actually doing all that for the money they offered. So, in my book, the industry is so far off respecting Your life-time and Your health and Your daily costs at home no matter where You're at with their lorry that You better go educate Yourself to a well payed craftsman job until they reassess payments and start paying what our/Your lifetime is actually worth again in relation to house prices, to rents, gas prices, groceries, energy and all the other things You still have to worry about when starting to drive an HGV. When I did it, I could pay for two month of shared rent, living the good life with vintage car and motorcycles in plurale and all in a great city in Germany with a week or ten days of work. Today, You can call Yourself lucky to get enough to be able keeping the flat and a car You might even hardly use because You're never really at home anyway, and once You stop driving You're as broke as when You started. I'm afraid even a doubling of today's wages in the industry would not pay for a halfway decent life anymore, given house/rent prices alone ..... So, go become a carpenter, plumber or builder, make half of Your money in direct cash and be home after five thirty every night.

      Unfortunately haulage would not be sustainable 9_5, road haulage has worked around the clock for decades, early days just pausing slightly on a weekend, now a weekend becomes part of a normal working week , as do many other industries, if you want to be a driver especially distance work ,accept your gonna do almost two weeks standard working hours in one, its a great environment if your prepared to accept the hours, you may do less hours staying local, or tipper day work , and at that you know youve done a days graft , hats off to them guys,,, road haulage is not for the faint hearted, but will give you big shoulders, however you dont know what its like until youve done it , ??? ,theres ya anwer

    Hi international truck drivers !!! I’m a truck driver in the states . I’ve been driving big rigs for about 2 years now . I’m a OTR refrigerated driver . I’m normally out about 20 days out of the month . I’m just curious about if there are positions like that in Europe. Where I could just stay on the truck until I make enough to get a place and established. Also will my experience here count there . I don’t mind starting from the bottom again just curious

      Hey buddy. Yes there are positions like that out here but I’m not sure if your license will transfer. May need to check our official government websites for that or enquire with a hgv training school here and ask them.

    I saw you posted a video about Eckhart Tolle. Do you ever just meditate while driving? Do you think HGV driving is good for meditating? I don't even drive a car yet, I'm going to get my licence soon and then immediately become a HGV driver. As for meditation I've been doing it for years but I especially like to when I'm riding a bus or on a train, as well as being in nature

      Yeah as if becoming a truck drivers needs u to complete yr MTech first? Earlier nobody dreamt of becoming a truck driver, like it’s with a doctor, engineer or IT professions, so there was mot much competition in that field, truck driving was mostly a dominion of people trying to escape from completing their education. But nowadays that has changed, even educated people are choosing truck driving as a career becoz the world has become a vast factory producing goods in a week which earlier took years to manufacture. So logistics has turned into a highly profitable business, luring educated people into finding any possible means to enter and then make it big. Everyone isn’t here to stay a truck driver for 40 years and then to retire as a truck driver. Most people nowadays have a much higher goal, so they get-in in anyway possible. Cheap drivers low pays made laugh so hard🤣😂. You definitely do not what a good pay is then, drivers have never been paid like company managers, accountants and lawyers etc. You are bitter becoz u always the world is always going to be the same old place and nothing much will change in the trucking industry, so u made no effort to upgrade yr career as a truck driver. That’s all there is behind all yr blame game.

  • @prranjalsfortitude-bb1ns
    @prranjalsfortitude-bb1ns 5 месяцев назад

    There are two types driving trucks these days:
    1) People who were born CEOs but due to lack of experience, expertise, education, execution and efficiency, they landed themselves in what they could manage best.
    2) Practical people who know how to grow in their career and they found something of great interest to join the profession of truck driver.
    Type 1 will always blame others and complain about everything but never make much out of their career as truck driver, making them bitter and bitter and constantly nagging others.
    Type 2 is the prerequisite for becoming a well paid truck driver or to kick start yr own trucking/ logistics business at some point of time.

    • @jay-mistry
      @jay-mistry  2 года назад

      Hi mate. Yes probably more money but also more things you have to do yourself too. Pick and find jobs, secure the client, taxes, expenses, break down costs, maintenance and servicing of trucks. If you’re on top of it I reckon it could be fruitful but if not then personally for me it’s not worth the hassle. I like a relaxed easy life, but for sure some people are wired differently and would prefer it. Just down to your own views on the matter bud

    Your channel has been a great find, excellent content. I’m currently working as my own boss and have for 16 years. However now wanting a change, I’m also a bit of a petrolhead and love driving. I’ve paid for my class 1 course, just because it made more sense to try and get C+E even though I want to go for class 3 to get experience.
    Hopefully I’ll pass everything and also with a company that helps with recruitment, however now they have their money they seem to be a bit slow, any tips on getting employment without any HGV experience? Thanks

    • @jay-mistry
      @jay-mistry  2 года назад +2

      Appreciate the comment mate. Glad you like the channel!
      And yes when it comes to finding a job, you will have to do what I did. Call many companies and hope one takes you on. I rang many tipper companies in my area and got one to train me for a couple of weeks and after that I was good to go solo.
      That will be the general process for any kind of driving job. You can also call up agencies and they are likely to take new drivers as there’s more demand right now.
      What I will say is don’t just send CVs, call up as that sets you apart from everyone else who send CVs.
      A lot of companies get hundreds of CVs sent per day, but a very small percentage of people make the call, and they are there people that can organise interviews right then and there on the spot.
      Hope that helps mate 👌🏽

    What sort of opportunities are there in your experience for new drivers/workers, so an 18 year old, I know it's possible, but how common is it, and do you think it is a viable option for a sixth form/college leaver?
    Cheers, great video

    • @jay-mistry
      @jay-mistry  2 года назад +3

      Cheers mate and good question. In my opinion if you’re 18 it will be slightly tougher for you. Yes you can take the test and pass etc to get your license but a lot of companies would not take drivers younger than 21, mainly for insurance purposes. However I personally say if you want to get it then go ahead and get it, and when you start applying for jobs, I would send a CV and call immediately rather than only sending a CV. You’ll likely get a lot of “no’s” or “too young” etc but it’s not impossible and after much applying and calling up you could get something. Getting experience is the main thing so like I said in the vid, once you land a job, it doesn’t have to be your last job. Use it as a stepping stone to build experience for the CV and reference and find a better job from that point onwards. Good luck bud

    Everyone wants more stuff now - but how about self-driving vans and lorries that might be here in 5 or 10 years at the latest?

    • @jay-mistry
      @jay-mistry  2 года назад +3

      In that case there’s still 5-10 years of opportunity in driving. However I personally think that automation for certain jobs would be too difficult to program when it would just be easier using a human. Eg navigating a quarry on the tipper lorries and knowing where to dump/pick up the loads. Also for other roles like pallet work or food delivery, it’s fiddly and easy for humans to do but difficult for automation to replicate. IMO.

    Hi Jay, it's me again 🙂. I've just learnt they don't have tippers or skip wagons where I'm going, but they do have tankers & are needing drivers! What do you think? Bearing in mind l want stress free A to B, easy life etc etc
    I don't want really long vehicle also. Any thoughts appreciated thanks.

    • @jay-mistry
      @jay-mistry  2 года назад +1

      Unfortunately I haven’t done that type of work, however in thinking about it, I think it probably is fairly good in terms of easiness. I know a tanker driver for water who says he’s job is decent, so it just depends if you can land and get one for yourself.
      I would say though, there’s nothing stopping you from switching to a different job even after a couple of weeks if you can do, that’s what I’ve done in the beginning and managed to find and try other jobs till I became happy where I’m at. That’s prob the best thing I could recommend for your situation also. You won’t know until you try it
