I forget how I stumbled across this manga, but the cover was certainly what grabbed my interest. Even better to discover it's a "backwoods" horror. I think what affected me the most was just how miserable and deliberately unlikeable the lead and his wife are. Initially I couldn't wait for the mountain man to show up, especially to kill the hell out of Seiichi. But the artwork and scares just kept me wanting the story to continue, even though Seiichi's irredeemable-piece-of-shit levels continue to go past 11. Particularly chilling is the conclusion of the story and the realization that this has all been an origin story for a slasher. He was already an asshole and a psychopath, but the incident at the mountain showed he finally found a home.
I know you normally cover manga but the anime Tears to Tiara probably seems like it's up your alley. I believe it started as a video game series but I could be wrong
