  • BBC Program, Remembrance - The Sikh Story Full program, first aired on the 9NOV2010.
    Documentary examining why followers of the Sikh religion were marked out as a 'martial race' under the British Empire, and how thousands of Sikh soldiers valiantly laid down their lives for Britain's freedom across two world wars.
    With contributions from eminent historians, military experts and war veterans, the film features the last-ever interview with legendary WW2 Squadron Leader Mahinder Singh Pujji, and the first television broadcast of a rare audio recording of a WW1 Sikh prisoner of war, handed to Britain in 2010 after 94 years in German hands.

Sikhism ask Sikhs to stand up for equality for all no what what race, religion and sex they might belong to. Overall, I don't want to say any religion is bad. There are just bad people in all religions.

      @@darshilmehta9905 that is a very one directional view of PEACE. Arms are NEEDED FOR PEACE look at all the advanced countries of the world, which one does not have an army? Where there is civilisation arms are needed for order but when arms are in the hand of EVIL DOERS AND TYRANTS, it is only suffering and chaos. If the arms are in the hands of JUST PEOPLE, it means that the RIGHTS OF ALL ARE UPHELD AND THE UNPROTECTED CAN BE PROTECTED.
      Therefore, if the poor and weak are being chastised and Sikhs give their lives fighting to protect them whilst Jains and Buddhists cannot fight effectively as they are not as well practiced in war due to becoming PACIFISTS IN TIMES OF PEACE - who is the most peaceful? the ones who die fighting to establish peace or the ones who sit idly (helpless or not).

      Thanks to British for their treacherous compliments to the Sikhs whenever they defended the interest of British empire. first when they fought heroically at the battle of Saragahi 1897 which has no parallel in the war history and in recognisition to that heroic feat whole British parliament rose and gave standing ovation but in return in india they were given an unique treat by firing on them by British army at Jalinwala baugh. hundreds of unarmed, defence less and innocent Indians at Jalinwana baug.in Amritsar were butchered to death 1919 not withstanding the exceptional contribution of the indian soldiers in Ist world war (1914 --1919); next time dividing the india gave a life time etching gift to Sikhs by allowing Lahore and Nankana sahib to Pakistan and thus causing millions of Sikhs and Hindus to flee their home and hearths.British was having at least 25 lakhs indian troops at the time of partition who , had they deployed them to control the partition riots, millions of lives would have been saved and so the honour of uncountable sikh and hindu women in the hand of muslims of the west punjab. Do the British have any answer for my this query?.it is rightly said without contribution of indian soldiers the advancement of Japs in the Burma was well nigh impossible and that too they were facing at the same time the stiff resistance from the nationalistic force I.N.A. had there not been a dramatic change in the last leg of the IInd world war due to dropping of atom bomb on Japan the advancement of the Japs along with the I.N.A.soldiers could not have been checked into india and probably partition of india would have been avoided: even other wise the British government could have slowed down the furry of partition violence by ensuring exchange of poulation on the basiss of religion and ensuring influx of total muslims from india into Pakistan then only demon Jinnah who gave call for direct action causing death of many hindus would have come into senses but again British played the mischief card in promoting his ill intentions to take out flesh and blood from the heart of the mother india by dividing it on communal line..A.K.ROY.9340731080.

We both have jobs in different cities now after graduating for Physio Assistant, so we don't hang out that much now but we keep in touch. A further betrayal not mentioned is that while Sikhs were serving the British in the occupation of Japan, a line was drawn through their homeland of the Punjab and many lost their ancestral land, property and lives of their family members in Lahore and its region. For all the loyalty and bravery they gave through 2 World Wars, they were not even rewarded with a country to call their own!
    On a personal level, whenever I travel in India and need advice or assistance,
    My respect for Sikhs and their culture determines that I will always ask a Sikh

    I love this video. I am an American Muslim and to see the history of Sikhs in th World Wars was very informative. Very similar to the African-American Soldiers (Buffalo Soldiers, Harlem Hellraisers, and the Tuskeegee Airman) in the U.S. Army. Great documentary.

      Kwenstantinos, It is not about how a person looks like which makes him a sikh but it is his faith. BTW the ones you are talking about "Turban and Beard" are sikhs and they are the Sikhs who are very preservative; As for on how I see them they are the most faithful and loyal people you can ever meet.

    • @Shinde77
      @Shinde77 10 лет назад +1

      Arshvir Singh actually it is also about how a person looks. A Sikh is someone who follows the Sikh Rehat entirely, does their daily Path, is honest, believes in one God, loves everyone, doesn't break the golden rules, and takes Amrit to become a true Sikh, thus not cutting any hair on their body and carrying the five K's and covering their head always with a Turban/Scarf etc.

    The contribution of Sikh soldiers is indeed underestimated. All the fatalities recorded in the service of the UK in WW1 and WW2 will find an honourable place on the National War Memorial to be built on Dover’s Western Heights. Perhaps our only guarantee of avoiding a repetition is to educate our youth about the cost of our present liberties and freedoms resulting from the sacrifices of two previous generations in which Sikhs distinguished themselves with extraordinary acts of valour.
