- An Albanian American proud of his heritage discovers his motherland is beautiful, rich in history and hospitality, but beneath the surface systemic corruption has captured opportunity and justice from too many. For over 100 years Albanians have raised a flag, now they must unite to raise a country.
Gjon Juncaj is a U.S. federal prosecutor. Gjon was appointed to the U.S. Department of Justice in 2001 through the selective Attorney General’s Honors Program. He has served the Justice Department in Buffalo, New York, Washington D.C., and his hometown of Detroit, Michigan. Born to ethnic Albanian parents in the United States, since late 2015 Gjon has had the privilege of serving as a Resident Legal Advisor at the U.S. Embassy in Tirana. His primary mission in Tirana is to assist with efforts to provide Albanian citizens with a legal system based on independence, integrity, and the pursuit of justice This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Amazing and inspiring speech, honest and full of hope.
Faleminderit.
I’m an Englishman living in Albania for 23 years. Why ? You may ask ....it is because of what Gjon points out. The hospitality, the faith, the family values and community support. There is no country that I’ve visited that matches Albania, not even my own.... sure he’s right to point out the corruption and weak goverment structures . The failure of the law makers and injustices, compound a mentality that does trust easily . Albania’s ambition to become a member of the European union, is also thwarted by ineffectual decisions to meet the requirements to become a member. In Albania its ‘I am first’ une jam I pare. The rest of the world are better at hiding their corruption, albania is learning....
Im an albanian born and bred in england and I'm in no way shape of form a nationalist, slightly patriotic but thats about it. I always feel a deeper connection to albania, im not sure what it is, it may be the nature if anything in my case and add to that the hospitality where you get random people talking to you on a night out whereas that is of rare occurence here in the uk.
Bravo Gjon Juncaj well said!
We shouldn't just think about why things happen. We should Contemplate how they happen & we should be able to prevent them from happening again.
We need more voices like yours..Thank you!!
Making Albanian Americans proud!

E gjithë Madhështia i përket Perëndisë! [14:31] Exhort My servants who believed to observe the Contact Prayers (Salat), and to give (to charity) from our provisions to them, secretly and publicly, before a day comes where there is neither trade, nor nepotism.
Such a cute man! Somehow this made me feel sorry for him being an Albanian, a part of the tragedy of being in the same boat
Great talk !
Hallal, kenaqsi te shohesh nje gje kaq te bukur.
Well Done Gjon. Shume Faleminderit. You For Sure Are A Real SHQIPE! I Am Very Impressed By Your Speech. Your Speech Really Inspired Me. Looking Forward To Meet You.🙏🇺🇸🙏🏽🦅🙏🏾🇦🇱💪
If we love our country we have to change it today. Don't wait to vote to change it. You can change it by being the best example for all people around you. There is not more effective way than giving your best as society than waiting for government laws to give solutions.
11.19 "Albania deserves better", fjali kot pa lidhje te hedhura aty o Gjon, pse meritojn shqiptaret me shume kur s'bejn asgje per te merituar me shume? apo kot flasim kot t'ja bejm qefin shqiptareve...shqiptaret jane ne kete gjendje sepse nuk punojn per nje Shqipri me te mire dhe e meritojn, deshiron situate me te mire? puno, dhe atehere do e meritosh, merita vjen me pune jo me fjali kot te hedhura aty pa mendim
E di edhe në kohen e Skenderbeut ishin nje fare e keqe qe iu kundervune atij duke vene perpara perfitimet personale.
hello
Gjon, well prepared talk. I have always thought that the justice system is the pillar of any civilized system, an idea which emerged somewhat from your talk. However, I find your view too poetic, reflecting the fact that you had an emotional relationship with Albania, not a physical one. This is why I think that your statement: "they (the corrupted) are few and we are many" is deeply misleading. Albanians are massively involved in corruptions of some kind, it is not an isolated phenomenon to few cliques. Corruption in Albania merely reflect the degradation of the morality of the population. Therefore, you pointing the finger to "few" just feeds the typical evasion from responsibility that has made them corrupt in the first place. The right way to resolve corruption is to tell ALL the people that they are corrupted, they they know someone corrupt, that they have a family member corrupt, that they have witnessed corruption, and that they can take action if they wanted. Putting the guilt to some "external few" is just counterproductive and surrealistic. And I think you think this way because you want to believe that Albanians are your brothers and sisters, and, like most normal people, you cannot accept that your brothers and sisters are corrupt. Guess what Gjon, corruption needs a principled fight that starts within the families and the clans. You need a new morality to fight corruption, and that morality cannot be built by externalizing the guilt. Hope you understand my point.
