Nah, anime has been doing this for decades. I know OG Naruto had fixes for DVD like the Lee vs Gaara fight and that was the early 2000s. Most people just don't know because it's impossible to find the TV version nowadays cause it came out 20 years ago
Yes because the ridiculous animator that made it was so overworked that he had to redo the whole thing and that guy is incredible.
He did not have to redo the entire thing. He just made minor body and facial corrections.

That episode was Super's biggest red flag. They never should have started Dragon Ball back up without proper time management. They may have learned their lesson now, but what were they actually thinking back then to let this happen?
This is, tragically, pretty standard for weekly anime. I remember Sailor Moon Crystal had the same issues of janky rushed to broadcast faces that got way cleaned up for the blu ray.

All because Fuji TV wanted Toei to schedule Super right after kai ended lmao. They thought with money they wouldn't struggle with a mere 3-4 months of the prodcution for the show 😭
2015 era Toei was garbage, all of their productions were a train reck, Saint Seiya Omega was another bad example, first season was great animation wise, second season makes you question why are you still watching this.
Thank goodness Super Broly changed their entire production schedule, and now even notoriously budget shows like Digimon get very good consistent animation.

If and when Dragon Ball Super comes back, Toei has no excuse for the art and animation to look any less spectacular than current One Piece.
On Portuguese television there is still the incredibly beautiful 5° episode, it was even shown last weekend.
I find it funny how people say that the animation got better because they did this but no they just redrew some frames the animation is exactly the same
I remember when the whole drama started when Super aired for the first time, people had to be constantly reminded that animation is not drawings. Some never listened.
The drawings the animation consists of got better.

@@Kiwipai Yes, the correct words for that would be "drawing is better". In my language we call it "line". When we talk about visual style in 2D animation, we use the word "line", like "I like the line of Dragon Ball, I am not fan of the line of Dragon Ball Z" or something. The line refers to the outline I think and it means how it's drawn. But generally it's just drawing if you want to refer to it. Because it is, a frame that has been drawn. Animation itself might be amazing, even if the drawing was terrible.
@Kiwipai no because animation itself refers to how something moves just because you swapped out a couple of frames doesn't mean that the animation now moves better the animation is exactly the same there's just a couple of key frames that are now swapped out. The pace of the fight is still exactly the same the flow of the animation is still exactly the same it's just now those really horrid looking keyframes are now gone replace with ones that look somewhat better.
It's like how people conflate art style with animation when they talk about something like Ben 10 Omniverse compared to the previous series before it. Omniverse does not have worse animation compared to the previous series which one might like or dislike more than the previous series but the actual animation the way things move is actually better than the previous series.

this is actually super common in anime. Since the live release has a very short turnaround schedule they’ll often note on the DVD releases that they have been updated. It is a very common practice to update for the home video release, which becomes the permanent release.
I hate that more streaming service anime doesn’t switch to home release footage.
Thats good. Every conpany should do this and release the best version for home release.
I’m in no way defending the stress and time constraints put on animators when making anime, but I thought it was not uncommon for anime to have a couple low quality broadcast versions and fixed home release versions. One of my favorite examples that we can still see is episode 61 of Hajime no Ippo. The production company sent the broadcast version to be dubbed so I think the bad version Is the most common to see.
IIRC Sailor Moon Crystal was the major series I remember doing this, where the animation was, uh, quite shoddy as it aired, then fixed by the time it got to streamers. But for sure, with the time crunch involved in daily/weekly broadcasts I am not surprised in the least if this is industry standard.

A few episodes of Evangelion literally weren't finished when they were put on the air for their original broadcast
Transformers Armada and Transformers Energon were infamous for having unpolished/unfinished animation in their dubs that was already fixed by the time they premiered in Japan, where they were made. The anime boom was such that Armada actually premiered in English first, like the first half of SD Gundam Force!
JJK season 2 episode 17(BEFORE BLURAY). That was the result of a stacked team working on a single episode with almost no time.
They still exist on pirate anime sites.

this is why archival is important, otherwise how would I be able to go and intentionally grab screencaps of the lesser versions of the episode in order to make bad faith arguments on why Super is Bad, Actually

I mean, Super *is* bad. But the art style is not the reason for this. It has amazing ideas here and there, but terrible execution. Plenty of characters don't act like themselves, namely Goku and Vegeta changed personalities from Goku the genius tactician and Vegeta the berserker to Goku the idiot and Vegeta the philosopher. They also did tons of bs in terms of power levels. Like I remember when they said Whis, Beerus and Goku was... how was it? 10:6:4? I don't remember exact comparison. But the power levels were scaled somewhat that. And even if we ignore that, Beerus had to use 10% of power to beat Goku, right? Sure. But Goku was SSJ God. Then we got Blue. And then we got Vegetto. And fusion is not addition, it's multiplication. So by that canon, Vegetto should be *far stronger* than Whis. Which obviously isn't the case. And the whole potara retcon. Like the whole thing about potara was that it's mean to be irreversible. Old Kaioshin said that and he always had the biggest knowledge of all the people. If there were *any* rules that mortals would have the fusion limited *he would have known that* but for some reason they suddenly added the rule that was never here. And as far as Ultra Instinct is cool, it's literally against Goku's character. Because Goku is the one who *always analyze* the fight. So having an upgrade of "no thinking" is against him. People may forgotten (or never actually seen), but Goku outsmarted plenty of his opponents. His second fight with Tenshinhan for example. He found a flaw in Tenshinhan's technique just after seeing it for a few second or minutes. I can't recall if he realized it immediately or after one Tenshinhan's attack. But that doesn't matter. He found the flaw, that even TENSHINHAN HIMSELF didn't know of, thinking he's bluffing. And his later fight against Piccolo? He could have wiped Piccolo by kamehameha, but he stopped. Roshi says that "it's good decision, because if he missed, he would have lost too much energy", but the actual reason is, that Goku wanted to get Kami out of him. He even provoked him to go super big and right after seeing this technique, he already knew that he will provoke him to do so. That was he literally let himself get swallowed, attacked him from the inside and get Kami out. That's Goku. Not some mindless automatic battler. Also yet another problem is the bs with Freeza. He trained for 4 months and went from being weaker than Goku SSJ at Namek, to being strogner than Goku SSJB after decades of training. i think at least 15 years has passed. 8 for Buu Saga, 3 for Androids, 1 year in the Room of Spirit and Time and some few more possibly. Oh, and over 1 year till Goku returned from Namek to Earth when Trunks appeared. And Freeza was suddenly stronger than that? Then he should have train for another year and he should be unbeatable. Him hating training is a poor excuse, especially that he feared Super Saiyan legend, so why wouldn't he just train and get so strong that they would never catch up with him? So many retcons, plothole and inconsistencies in Super. Animation is not a problem compared to that. And all I said is just tip of an iceberg. I could have written more, but it would be too long. Probably nobody will read this comment anyway...
poor animators, they were probably working extra hours to deliver that thing on time and they got shit on.
I could've sworn that when I watched it on Hulu a few years back, the version they showed was broadcast rather than home release.

That start of that close up with ssj2 goku around 0:33 to 0:34 for the original actually looks really good before his mouth gets all weird. It has a sorta db super broly movie vibe to it.
It still somewhere out there online and pirate, my gripe is, with those unecessary remade episode of One Piece Luffy vs Arlong, Zoro vs Mihawk, this one not yet on the quality of One Piece
Common thing in a lot of long-term shounens that get Blu-Ray releases afterwards. Fairy Tail is also a big "offender" of this phemomena, where we got slide shows for some episodes and properly redrawn scenes in the Blu-Ray and subsequent releases.
A similar case happened with Sonic X and other animes, they give an unfinished version to the international and French dubs while the 4Kids dub and Japanese (S3 only) gets the finished animation
This was my childhood sleeper hit. I borrowed it from a friend, not really knowing what to expect, and I got something I obsessed over probably just as much as Pokemon Colosseum/XD

it's was always like this, the only difference is that during 1990 internet doesn't ecxsist and without taping it on a videotape would be hard to make all that attention on a frame or a bad design
first two arcs were HORRENDOUS i was there every sunday morning. What a horrible day that was for 5.
While most streaming services do have the updated Blu-ray episodes, it's takes forever for them to update them. Crunchyroll still had the broadcast version of most of their anime long after the Blu-ray release. Hell, I was catching up on MHA with a friend of mine, using crunchyroll at my place and blu-rays at his, and we both noticed that a lot of seasons 5 and 6 are still the broadcast versions on crunchyroll.
Well... there is always places where these are preserved and I hope you already got your backup of it as well.
I didn't know they fixed it. Now i need to check which version i have.

This is the thing about anime releases people didn't get with this episode. This is what always happened with anime. We just rarely saw it because what we got on TV before was the 2nd home release version, not the broadcast release.
I saw DBZ the first time before it aired in English. My aunt brought me a VHS she recorded while in Japan, with Cell becoming ultimate.
Cells face was shifting around on his head, like, every few seconds one of the animation cells was misaligned.
I already downloaded all of it years ago. I probably still have it.

I'm pretty sure a similar thing happened in episode 16 of Evangelion.
I stand by the fact that, despite the ugly frames at times, I generally enjoyed the flow of the fight more in Super than in BoG, it felt a tad more fleshed out and well paced, had that bit of Goku instinctively backing away from Beerus, and I'd even say despite the lower quality animation, it felt more intense due to the fact that the movie version felt a little more slow. But that's just my opinion, the fight is objectively animated worse, but I think it FEELS better.
Battle of the Gods version was barely fight. Goku just did like a handful of moves and got knocked out

I hate when shows instead of getting time and effort spent on them are rushed out because the studio wants to market them to make money quick rather than release good quality shows and to push BD sales because "it will be fixed" it's always been a thing but its much more apparent now with streaming and simulcasting.
Depends. Crunchyroll probably still uses the old footage from broadcast like they do with Attack on Titan if you watch it with the japanese audio.
