Gosh, the D is amazing. A much fuller, richer sound off such a small instrument.

I had a D strumstick that I thought was a G because I had it lying around for years and I didn’t know before I rediscovered it and I finally tuned it correctly today and I love it even more

If they could combine the G and the D strumsticks together into one, 6-string instrument, then you'd have a guitar-dulcimer, or 'guitcimer' if you will. Add chromatic frets, and you'd have a mountain-style guitar!

I have the D and it is great - 200 bucks for an American made instrument is fantastic!! We play 'throwed stones' and do other sixtys psycodelic music like sunshine superman with the stick. It is awesome and has the Gawk factor you need if you play in the street.

This is an ancient instrument, found in many cultures. Check out Mongolian
folk music, you will see a very similar instrument. I have a strum stick, and find it to be a very useful instrument. If you write a song, and it does not sound good on a strum stick, your song may not be that good.

Thank you for sharing this comparison. I like the mellowness and tenor (?) sound of the D strum stick. I was wondering how it would sound with nylon strings or whether it could handle wound bass strings (for the two support strings). I heard that nylon strings sometimes make these sound too quiet.

    Hello from France !
What a great instrument here ! I'm planning to buy one.
Could you make a video showing differences between the sound of different kind of woods (or explain it quickly if not possible) so i can decide which one i will purchase ? Thanks !

The D is kind of midsy so I would say it might be better for accompaniment and the G, since it's higher might be nice to play along with a guitar, then the highs would contrast the midsy guitar, like a mandolin or something. But that's not to say you shouldn't do just the opposite. There are no rules. Just getting the creative juices flowing.
Makes me think. Any chance of getting a bass Strum Stick? That might be difficult since it's not chromatic and bases usually play with other instruments. Might be worth it anyway. People will buy it. Which makes me think again, the amount of uses for a double neck at this point are getting pretty high. You could have the G and the D in the same instrument. Or you could have a G, and a G bass. etc etc.

It can be versatile if it was a professional using it with technique's but not to beginners, that is alot of potential in this instrument i know i been playing it for the past few days, and the construction is high quality if it was £95 i wouldn't complain lol

G sounds more like a Dulcimer, and C more of a lute/mandolin. Clever, but why not 4 strings?

Each to their fancy, of course. I play the D more often than the G, but I use them both in a house band I play in. Retuning one or the other lets me quickly be ready for songs in C, D, E, F, G, and A. That’s an old video, check this comparison, vimeo.com/146809355
And also see this page for audio comparisons of many models.

The 'new' Seagull Merlin clearly takes its inspiration from instruments like this.

The diatonic scale and DAD tuning that Strumstick and Merlin use are derived from mountain Dulcimer, the Strumstick design is 36 years old. Whatever gets people making music!
