What a great lecture! So true! I don’t like people in my face and I have the choice to walk away or tell them. Dogs dont have that luxury when they are on leash- and the only way they communicate is with their teeth. I learned my dog doesnt like attention from people, so I dont put him in that situation. He isnt there to be pet by everyone and thats okay.
Another informative video. One thing stood out to me. The client said that she became nervous when the stranger approached the dog. The dog then he threat displayed by growling. I think the dog sensed the woman's uncertainty or nervous energy and took the initiative to protect her. Keep up the good work.
Humane and intelligent. If you listen he is not repeating but carefully offering leadership and safety for all involved. I imagine this does involve a thorough knowledge of the situation and ability to communication.

This video was a game changer for me in the way that I developed the relationship with my dog. He’s nearly two now and a couple things happened just as you said, he matured and has a couple of traits which I have to manage. We have a very respectful relationship and I get that he doesn’t like everyone, and that’s ok.

I've been watching a lot of your videos lately. We recently adopted a female 6 yo boxer mix who seems to have not been properly socialized and may also have some fear-based aggression. She has never bit, but barks, growls, and sometimes lunges at new visitors and then, even after she settles down, will bark at people moving about our home. She is doing better on walks when we relax and keep her close, but we are not sure how to break her of trying to intimidate visitors to our home. I bought a Sprenger prong, but am hesitant to start using it because not sure if an E-Collar would be more effective training tool for her. She has never been aggressive with myself or my boyfriend who live with her. But she is definitely stubborn, as boxers are, and could use some good leadership. Your videos have given me such good insight on how to be a good dog owner for her and have shown me how my past sessions with trainers have set us up to fail. Thank you.
I have never ever trained any dog I have ever had with food or clickers etc just leadership & praise and I’ve had well trained, respectful & obedient dogs.

Listening to this video, I believe I literally began to feed the fear right into him according to what your saying about paying the dog to perform. He reacted to next door neighbor at night or just even unknown sounds and would low growl or bark. I would recall him backing up 10-15 ft and reward him for the recall/redirect. Sounds like I rewarded him for the growling or barking? Is this correct thinking here? Sounds like I should have bursted the bubble way back then.
I believe you are rewarding the dog for the recall. If the dog was barking and growling; and you feed the dog treats (no recall) I would say you were rewarding the bad behavior. If I’m wrong, please let me know. I’m open to learning too. 😊

My dog is a rottweiler with 2 and a half years. Since he was 7 months old 4 coaches have been with him to train the dog, but he is reactive, eats everything he sees above him. He eats the bed, towels and everything that stands above him, including the tab and does not like touches. The problem is that he is big and very strong. It weighs 60kg and behaves like that. Still threatening to attack people he does not know. Can you help me? I am from Brasil.
My problem is my dog barks and growls at my grandchildren and they have to be around her which stresses me out because I’m so afraid she will bite .. and confused about how respond to the territorial behavior ??
After watching this video I realized that I have conditioned my dog the same way (I adopted her when she was 2 from a shelter). And because I do not have her respect she has these aggressive tendencies. I can not take her for a walk, car ride, nor leave my front door open (the actual door open, we have a gate door so we can have fresh air in) without her barking and lunging at dogs, humans (especially if they are out for a run and they are coming toward us), strollers (not really into kids either, but it depends on the kids. Hates my cousins, tolerates my neighbors.), and bikes (motorized or not).
Upstate Canine Academy Simplified version: my dog barks and lunges at other dog and humans, and bikes (motorcycles and bicycles). These behaviors happen whenever I’m taking her out for a walk, in the car, and when our front door is open. At the dog park she is fine, but has a tendency to get protective of myself and my family. So my question is: How do I recondition my dog to respect me and not have these “incidents”?
Dyani - Have you tried spacing out the treats? So, for every 3-4 verbal praise and pats give your dog one treat. I have just started trying this so that I may begin to build a genuine relationship with my dog. Best of luck!
I'm not the trainer in the video, but... just stop giving treats with the completion of every command or cue. Even food or treat-based trainers SHOULD be weaning the dog off of needing a treat after EVERY act of co-operation. We have been working with a dog that was treat trained, which created excess excitement and a food drive that is not appropriate for our dogs in our situation, so we just stopped pretty much cold-turkey, but for many dogs in many situations, tapering off the food might work. Food rewards can be a useful tool, especially in certain circumstances, but they are only one tool among many.
The problem is not always the food, the food has become the cue for the behavior. Get one private lesson from a decent clicker trainer and you'll be fine. A basic rule of thumb is to ask the dog to do more for less.
It's already been said the owners should know the basic of how a dog and the pack work I would be asking question on the cost of his services and the time spent talking to repetitive. My training takes minutes to explain and is on the fly as he goes.
It is ALL about the the pack structure of the dog! You must be the Alpha leader over the dog 100%,you must boss over the dog! Unless your the Alpha male, the dog will do anything and everything the dog wants to do!
But it's important to understand how to establish a good relationship with a dog. So many don't. And it's because they don't understand what's going on. So they don't set a good precedent when the dog walks in the door. And, frankly, if they don't, the problems start there.
We learn through repetition Sandy....these owners HAVE FAILED THE DOG and must be educated.....repeatedly to undo the wrong way and reinforce the proper way!! Please make a video of you training a new, working dog in front of the owner .....
Some owners need to hear something in 6 different ways before they get it. Maybe you're the kind who gets it the first time, but most people need constant repetition to learn. And sometimes they don't understand it one way, but maybe they will understand it another way.

I believe you are rewarding the dog for the recall. If the dog was barking and growling; and you feed the dog treats (no recall) I would say you were rewarding the bad behavior. If I’m wrong, please let me know. I’m open to learning too. 😊

How would you begin teaching a dog not to expect food with every command? I've made the mistake of always using it and its now coming back to bite me.
