I don't think anyone could do Puddleglum like Tom Baker.

No indeed! But other actors have done good things with the role, including Bernard Cribbins in the BBC Radio version.

The first time I saw this in the BBC video and heard Tom Baker give this speech, one word whispered itself in my head and on my lips - "Doctor..."

For me, it's the opposite - I heard the Curator start talking in "The Day of the Doctor" (my first real episode) and I knew I had heard his voice before!

No wonder the Fourth Doctor looked so familiar when I first saw classic DW...marvelously done, Mr. Baker!

LOL I had the reverse experience; I'd grown up with his Doctor, then saw this series.

The best part is that Puddlegum is literally C.S. Lewis. Back when he passionately tried to debate in favor of his faith on university campuses, he ran into a few road blocks he couldn’t hurdle over. He lost his ability to prove his faith, and entered a recluse state of depression.
Puddlegum is his answer to his doubts- “If I’m wrong about all this religious stuff, it’s a better world than an Atheistic one, so I am going to go on believing.”
    C.S. Lewis is the man.

I've used Puddleglum as a muse when debating materialists on consciousness, morals, and purpose. This scene always pops into my head. I decided to look it up on youtube and here it is, saved from my childhood.

Where the heck did you get that bizarre story? Puddleglum was based on Lewis's gardener Fred Paxford, well know fact. Paxford was a tall, lanky man who would answer the question, "Isn't it a lovely day?" with the observation, "Aye, but that don't mean it won't rain tomorrow."
He was portrayed in the T.V. movie _Shadowlands_ by Norman Rutherford. Sadly, he was left out of the feature film.
Lewis never stopped defending the faith, not even after his beloved Joy passed away. He railed at God, but never abandoned Him, and eventually carried on.

@@MaskedMan66 Lewis had lost some debates in his later apologetic years (he stormed out of one and said his argument is in ruins- he was arguing the main points of his Miracles book). He began to focus more on his creative works after. When the Silver Chair was written, Puddlegum’s speech at the end was C.S. Lewis’ response to his own internal struggles- “I’m going to live as a Narnian even if there’s no Narnia- if we imagine a world better than the real one, it’s better to imagine.”.
Sometimes when a person becomes obsessed with proofs and can’t find an irrefutable one for God, it oppressed them (like with Rene Descartes). He started to incorporate more of what he was experiencing (Screwtape Letters) into his fictional works. Our heroes are human lol.
The Puddlegum character may be based on his family, but that ending speech was from C.S. Lewis’ heart.

@@TheChrispy771 I already told you that Puddleglum was based on his gardener. I have to see some reliable documentation for that tale you tell. Walter Hooper never said any such thing, and he was Lewis's personal assistant in his last years.
