Don't put the compressor outside. The air coming out will be ICE COLD. Instead, take a bed sheet and staple it to a large cardboard box side (like a fridge or dishwasher box) and stick it in the room with the compressor. It's almost as good as a sound absorption blanket, but only costs about $7.

I've been really looking in to getting an astro impact but I can't decide between the 1/2 or the 3/8. I was kind of leaning towards the 1822 nano max. Either way when I decide on one I'm always gonna wonder what the other one would have been better. So I'm sure eventually you'll eventually end up with money for both of them. But which would you recommend?

Kind of off topic, but reminded me: Years ago went to work in a small (non automotive) 2 man shop... first thing I noticed was their impressively huge sounding compressor 'short cycling'. That first day I opened the compressor enclosure and found it indeed enormous, complete with eons worth of undisturbed dirt/spooge/grunge everywhere, including the drain & surrounding areas. I busted open said
drain & the thing vociferously spewed loathsome looking oily water for over an hour. Cycling went from every few minutes down to maybe twice a day. Don't even ask what it's oil & air filter looked like...

    • @SmittySmithsonite
      @SmittySmithsonite 5 лет назад +3

HA! Reminds me of an old 120 gallon compressor my buddy had at his rented shop. Was an oldie. He used it for painting cars, and kept having moisture issues. Figured I'd go above and beyond, and drain the water out ... only there was no drain. Had to get under there with an adjustable wrench, and take the bung out of the bottom. That's when I found out, the air pressure gauge was WRONG. There was 175 PSI in there when it read about 40! BAAANG!! I thought I had lost some fingers ... and my eardrum! Sounded like I stuck my head in a jet engine at full throttle. Deafening! I was COVERED in a light brown, rusty crusty water and mud mix. Checked myself out, and I still had all my digits, thankfully! You can bet I won't do that again! 🤣

To the “O” family happy holidays.
    Thank you for two things.
    1. Helping me work on a ton of mine and neighbors vehicles. Rust belt here outside of Chicago.
After retirement after 30 years, I find great help in your videos teaching and building confidence in repair of vehicles.
    2. Finding a ton of helpful tools.
Beside myself ordering tools after seeing your recommendations and abuse.
My Bride even sneaks watching your videos. This is where she finds me tools for my birthdays and Xmas presents.
PS, Both myself and My Bride cried at your vehicle giveaway gift.
And that is a great thing to shed a tear for something that touches your Heart.
May God continue to Bless you and your Family.

My old boss many moons ago decided when he did a shop expansion to build a room for the compressor. It was a nice 5x5 cinderblock room for the 120 gallon tanked compressor.
All was well for about four months then the summer temperatures and lack of airflow over the oil cooler tubes cooked it.
Moral of the story, get a scroll compressor. Much quieter, faster recovery, and takes up less space.

Astro has been killing it for quite some time now. Haven't realized it until now, but I've got ALOT of Astro's stuff, and knock on wood, NONE of it has busted so far! I'm gonna have to git me that there compact impact you've got! Thing is sweet! Will fit a lot more places than my IR impact, for sure. I also hate the snap ring on my IR stuff - that was one of the first things I broke on it when I first got it. A socket got stubborn ... I got mad ... the rest is history. Now I've got 4 spares, and haven't needed any of them, lol.
My sister-in-law stopped by with her '04 Olds Alero the other day - this is the one that I had to Time-Sert the rocker stud back into the cylinder head, back when the car had 64k miles on it a couple years back. Anyhoooooo ... she's been having flat or slow leaker tires the past few weeks. The lips on a couple of them were tacoed - hit some real nice holes in our lovely MA highways. One in particular had cracked and was leaking THROUGH the rim! They're pretty wide and low profile for a sedan like this (more sports-car like), but the size of the tire matched the door sticker. They look like aftermarket mags, since they're a chrome 5-spoke. I started checking the rest, and I saw sections of the outer lip busted right off, or bent into a "V", with a crack at the peak. That got me wondering ... so I took a closer look at the hub for any markings. One said "GM" ... except it looked like a 5 year old had been playing with castings. Looked more like a "CM" than "GM". In other words, I think these were counterfeit chinese copies! First I've ever seen of that, but I've also never seen rims crack and break like this - normally they'll just bend on big potholes, but these ones just break, even with just minor bends! Never know what you'll see these days ...
Enjoyed the Trained By Techs show last night - was glad to see you and Keith on there! 👍😎👍

Like the fluid film treatment. And the lube under abutment plates, keeps pads from locking up. I throw the brackets in my blast cabinet abd bead blast. Last pair of rotors were oiled.
Air compressor, run intake outside,75%noise reduction. Done it, awesome.
A quality brake job in my opinion.

I like it "If Eric can't break it we'll sell it". I purchased a few tools from your recommendations and I've been very happy with the results. I'm sure this new tool from Astro will be no exception.

I hear that, Wyatt. Big Nasty has been the best thing I've ever purchased! Saved me countless hours of swinging a 4-pound sledge over the past 18 months or so. 😎
Same with that Super Scraper - I get differential jobs done MUCH faster now. Used to take me a solid hour on some vehicles cleaning up old, baked-on gasket material. That thing is awesome!

As far as the compressor being outside, I work at a shop with 3 big compressos. Two are outside in a shed just like you would have at your house. It's sits on a bed of stones. We've never had any issues with that setup.

    Eric,
Great video - thank you! Good luck with the new Astro tools and let us know how they hold up long term. I just finished with the front brakes (pads/rotors) on my wifes Jetta - you would be proud! I will have to to rent the tool to retract the pistons when I do the rears. I have the Astro 'hub tamer' set 78825 for when I did the front wheel bearings on my 02 Focus last spring. Great tool and I will definitely consider other Astro tools going forward.
    SMA#1
    God bless
    Paul

Hello Mrs and Mr O IF you want to lower The noise from your compressor i can recomend build a simple box of plywood around the compressor and insulate the inside. Give the box a few inch of ventilation top and bottom to keep the compressor cold and happy.
We did this at my work a few years back and it has been great.
Thanks for all of your time to make all god videos!
    Have a awsome christmas holliday.
