CLIP DESCRIPTION:
John Q. (Denzel Washington) offers to sacrifice himself for his son.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A national health care crisis in the United States yields this tense drama from screenwriter James Kearns and director Nick Cassavetes, who experienced a real-life dilemma with his daughter's congenital heart disease that mirrors the one in this film. Denzel Washington stars as John Q. Archibald, a factory worker facing financial hardship as a result of reduced hours in his workplace. When his young son, Michael (Daniel E. Smith), is stricken during a baseball game, John and his wife, Denise (Kimberly Elise), discover that their child is in need of an emergency heart transplant. Although the Archibalds have health insurance, they are informed by hospital administrator Rebecca Payne (Anne Heche) that their policy doesn't cover such an expensive procedure. Unable to raise the money himself, John persuades the hospital's compassionate cardiac surgeon, Dr. Raymond Turner (James Woods), to waive his lofty fee, but is still left with too much of a financial burden to bear. With no recourse but to take his son home to die, John snaps and holds the staff and patients of the hospital's emergency room hostage at gunpoint. John is soon a media hero, the focus of intense news coverage, even as police chief Gus Monroe (Ray Liotta) and hostage negotiator Frank Grimes (Robert Duvall) try to resolve the situation before it leads to bloodshed.

"Somebody's gotta die in order for him to live, I'm his father, it's me." Need a lot more father figures like this.
Somebody else would have to off me I couldn’t do that 💯🤷🏾♂️
Yeah I wish my dad would’ve died, im not dying I just want him dead lmfao
Or ya know, maybe the healthcare system could be better? 🤷♂️
I was thinking of the same line
@D L What the flip does that mean?
This movie really breaks my heart. When I see Denzel Washington acting in this movie, I don't see an actor trying to play a role, I see a father willing to do whatever it takes to save his child. Even willing to kill himself, that's love right there.
MAnuscript421 right‼️ once u look past the acting it’s super more heavy to grasp
Especially after I have my baby I feel him deeply
@daniel perrault You might want to hold back a little, so far you've been clever and lucky, but one mistake and all of this will come to ashes. Immortality isn't about rushing into things, it's about outliving everything else.
amen!
That made me cry!! OH MY!!!
“I’m not going to bury my son is gonna bury me” this movie always made me cry
When you are watching a movie with Denzel Washington in it, you don't just watch Denzel, you *feel* Denzel. When a person has the ability to make you feel what their character is feeling in a movie, that means they are damn good at what they do.
AAAAAMEN ❗ I just finished watching this. 💛
"This movie really makes you *feel* like Denzel Washington."
- IGN
He’s not gonna shag you bro
That was very well said, I agree with you 110%
That's what parents do, you sacrifice yourself for ur kid no matter what. He's right no parents should be burying their kids, kids should be burying their parents when its their time. Nobody wants to bury anybody, but kids should never get buried at young age
Well said
Facts
Brings a tear to my eye. As a father of a beautiful 2 year old it all makes sense. I’d do anything for that little angel of mine.
When he says “he’s a good kid, he likes body building” it made me cry
This movie is so underrated and this movie was one of Denzel Best performances. He was robbed of an Oscar
Denzel one of the best actors this movie deserve an Oscar
Oh yes. This was it.
You know he won an Oscar for Training Day the same year this came out right?
@@scottwpilgrim wrong Training Day came out 2001 and yes he should've got an oscar not only Training Day but this movie as well
@@scottwpilgrim but this is a far superior performance than training day if you ask me.
this is what an Oscar winner looks like!!!
They should’ve gave him a oscar for this more than muthafuckin’ training day in my humble opinion
@@jerramaurice7836 you are correct!!!
@@jerramaurice7836 training day is a masterpiece
John Q, Malcolm X or Training Day. It could've been all of em if ya ask me
@@jeremybrown9611 exactly it should''ve been all of them
He deserves an Oscar just for this clip alone
👍🏽👍🏽
arturo163 I agree
Hell naw 😂😂
Chrisna 1311 u tripping
@Jose Rodriguez you dumbass. There's alot more oscar worthy moments Denzel has than in this movie. This movie is plain, basic plot.
He's got two already. One for best supporting actor for Glory in 95 and one for best actor for Training Day in 02. Each Oscar you win over your first one gets exponentially harder and harder to obtain.
The most any actor or director, male and female, has ever won is four. Having even one Oscar is an incredible achievement, so Denzel Washington has been appropriately recognized for his talents.
That’s a real father ♥️
Sorry but Joesph frizle is😂😂😂😂 I’M SORRY I’M SORRY
Suckers
Yea right man this guy cant even go to the gas station to get cigarettes for 10 years
Something that you lack, bianca, given your sexual past
You must have grown up in a dysfunctional household if you think Denzel's character strays from the norm.
And when the Doc finds out the gun was never loaded. Another great moment too.
I was super captivated until he put the gun in his mouth then I could Not stop laughing. Just the way he did it and the look on his face was absolutely @#$&ing hilarious.
@@chaseclement512 lol same thing happened to me when I first watched this movie
When Eddie griffin tries to get Denzel to accept the situation It gets me everytime. Can't imagine giving up on my kids
It's obvious Eddie Griffin's character doesn't have kids... You never accept that your son is going to die, not as long as he still has a beat left in his heart and a breath left in his lungs...
@@eugoldlareg yes! Exactly! The one thing about people that absolutely makes me wanna attack them is their IGNORANCE! I’m so sick of peoples’ ignorance. You literally cannot understand what another person is feeling or going through if you haven’t experienced it first hand yourself
What’s funny is he’s had the most kids in real life then any one in that movie
@@jaytpharaoh8411that’s why he’s a pretty great actor himself
@@nsasupporter7557I hear ur perspective but to be fair I don’t think that’s what Eddie’s character was trying to do. Ultimately, he sees a man who has already been pushed well beyond the brink of morals and in some ways, sound judgement. All this is about to culminate in a suicide that may very well lead to no benefit for anybody at all. Could just end up with 2 lives lost instead of 1. He, like mostly everyone else in this scene just want what’s best for John and what’s left of his family. We must remember that yes he is ignorant because he just met John a few hours prior, but in that time he’s grown to care enough for John to not want him to kill himself in the face of an insurmountable situation he possibly can’t avoid live or dead. If John’s heart didn’t work and they both died…what about Denise?
This is the part of the movie I call " Denzel vs. The Cast " ! He was nothing short of brilliant .
I loved this scene so much. It really stood out for me with Denzel's acting. I really felt he was into this role of being a father protecting his son. I also liked James Woods. His character wasn't amoral. He pointed out issues with John's plan, but I liked how he had that brief moment of saying that he does like John's son as a person. I felt like that was a 'crack' in his attempt at stoic armor which John capitalized on, so it made his ultimate willingness to go along with the plan believable.
Ikr loved this scene 2
"That Mike is going to die."
"No, I don't accept that! Ever!"
Man that part gets me.
“You done Lost your damn mind” 😭😭😭
“Man, that means you’ll be dead” 😂
"Maan thats just crazy!" 😂
That “Noooo🥴 I don’t accept that” is LEGENDARY💯💯💯💯
Yes this and solitary confinement in the hurracain is his best acting ever.
this scene gets to me everytime.
no parent should ever have to bury their child.
Omg I'm so sorry but i died laughing whem eddie Griffin said "man you done lost yo damn mind lmao😂😂😂
When I saw this movie at the theater, the audience applauded at the end like they were watching a live stage performance! I'll never forget it.
I also seen that happen a few years ago for Bill & Ted but for this I get it.
Bro when Denzel act you really don’t know if he’s acting or serious 😭 this man so good !!!
This is why Denzel is my favorite actor of all time. Classic film.
This movie started my interest in movies with people that commit criminal acts but aren’t monsters. I know it’s fiction but there’s something powerful about how desperation and fear will sometimes cause normal people to do whatever it takes to save someone’s life.
Denzel ain’t an “actor.” They’re just documenting Denzel’s many reincarnations. He’s so amazing!
This movie is why I want to be a dad so badly 😭 I want a child to love the way Denzel loves his son ❤️
Hell yeah brother there's some good destined to be father's out here, just need a woman to understand and communicate that's all im asking for
My man 🤝
Denzel Washington and Uncle Phil from 'Fresh Prince' are the father figures I aspire to be.
i wish someone would meme the "i can't accept that" quote
I always do that at the store when they give me big bills I DONT ACCEPT THAT....EVER!!! I want singles for the club 😂🤣😂🤣🤣
@@reecemannsays you a damn fool lmfao 😂
@@eazy1174 Im just being a realist about it brother 😂🤣😂
Eddie Griffin did a spectacular amazing job as part of the cast!
This movie made me cry so much
Fax❤️🙏🏾
“Let go & let God!” It was a serious scene until Eddie Griffin said that. It hits different coming from him, the comedian.
"You'd like him" 😭😭😭
This movie broke my heart when I first seen it. Denzel’s acting is amazing in this... I cried most of this movie 😥
I was 9 or 10 when I seen this movie and I was balling my eyes out throughout this movie.
The fact he didn't get an Oscar for this shows Hollywood awards mean nothing at all
Fax this bigger than any Oscar they mean nothing this is a soul movie ❤️🙏🏾
This is in my opinion, THE most underrated acting ever filmed. This scene and the following scene when he attempts to kill himself and the gun doesn't fire. Ive seen great acting... Never seen any acting better than Denzel in this film. Period.
this remains the only movie to ever make me cry
Have you seen Big Fish?
Do what ya gotta do as a Man. Let God handle it sounds like an easy way to wash your hands. How bout pray for the man and do whatever to help with his struggle. Good samaritans or passer byers? Jesus in disguise..Never know who ya decide to help or not help what that would mean to them or for you later on down that long and winding road. Mysterious ways, whos got the lead, us or Jesus? Mmm. 2sides to every coin. Well done my good and faithful servant.
YUP‼️
Watch A.I Artificial Intelligence
Watch the green mile
Is it me or Denzel looks like a 24 year old kid instead of 48
Black don’t crack
This was the last movie he looked like "Denzel"...Out of Time the following year was the first time I was like, "Man, he's almost 50". Dude didn't seem to age for a good 20 years.
I'm with Denzel I would never except to bury my son he is supposed to bury me by any way I'd make sure
Accept*
James woods saved the kid! And then he had a piece of candy!
He was on there!!!!???!
@@savonhdtv6009 he's... The. Doctor.
Ooh piece a candy
The way he put the gun in his mouth was histerical and the way he looked afterwards 😅😅😅😅😅😅
When Denzel says "You'd like him" and James Woods said "I do like him" LOL...it didn't feel real at all
@@nitroburner1838 It was a man losing his man and the doc was playing along. It felt real to me.
"John Q." is "Dog Day Afternoon" with a hospital instead of a bank, and heart transplants instead of money.
StillConscious.
Right
..if Denzel is in a movie youre not just watching.. You are Feeling the scenes!
That Denzel is an emotional wreck in this.
That's acting
He’s easily one of the top 3 actors ever!!
A real father would give his life to ensure the safety of his children.
better the medical care improved made equal in america health care awful
I forgot undercover brother was in this movie 😂
*Eddie Griffin
What he said "I reject that" you can hear that he was about to cry. The depth to that man's soul! 😢
Fantastic movie. A father doing ANYTHING he can to save his son
I could never watch this movie without crying. So real, and hits close to home.
I cried during this
When I saw this in theaters, the entire audience gasped in shock when Denzel’s character said he would sacrifice his heart.
But training day he got the oscar for lol he was 100x better in this movie but unfortunately certain people can only be seen a certain kind of way to certain people
One of the most amazing movies I have seen as a parent, I agree.
Denzel is a damn good actor, one of all time in the history books
Act so good you think this real life video of dad getting told bad news
After becoming a father this is what a man does
Chadwick Boseman was heavily influenced by Denzel, some say he was gonna take his mantle, if he was alive and Denzel gave this kind of performance, can’t imagine what Chadwick would’ve done, RIP king
“You’ll like him” 😢
Yo this clip alone makes me shed tears “when he says I’m dead serious.”
You Lester Diamond the pimp from Beverly Hills?
We watched this movie in our Religion class 🙌
“Man that means, you’ll be dead” 😂 I know this is serious but I can’t help but laugh
best part of the movie
I swear this must’ve happened to him before, I can’t tell myself he’s acting in this movie, what I see is a father doing whatever it takes to save his son
I love this movie.
Denzel is a great actor because he understands the deep complexity of human experience... Never fully without sorrow even in happy times...
So, my question is....what kind of a parental, human being can watch this scene and movie and not cry? This scene kills me as does The Notebook and the intro to "Up".....like breaks me down to my core.
As a father I would do the same..I would give my everything for my child to live..and I know all you parents out there would do the same
Who was better than James Woods?........well maybe Denzel but Jimmy Woods brought the goods every time.
If my son is in so much danger under the Canadian Ministry of Child Welfare, that if I don't give up my heart, my son won't make it in your care - you ALL need to go to jail. For all the Canadian babies out there. And trust me, I am locking you up !
"Sick, HELP! - Sick, HELP!!!"......
Ngl this movie made me cry like hell this is so sad
"Moving Heaven and Earth is very simple despite the common folk say such things are impossible. Nothing is impossible once concentration and steel like determination are used." Hagakure (book of the Samurai)
Biggest/Toughest/Hardest sacrifice any parent could make ❤️
Denzel's acting is suberb.
Undercover Brother really brought the comedic element to this movie
Denzel was killing shit back then and he still killing shit now. One hell of an actor!
Without a moment of hesitation. Take my heart.
❤️🙏🏾
He doesn’t need to slap a comedian to get an Oscar
this is one of my all time favorite movies. the acting was perfect. everyone played their part perfectly.
The system is still broken.......if people got the real message this movie is about, healthcare wouldnt still revolve around money...yep back to reality...the battle between two political parties. The person with more money gets to live first because of that golden argument....WAITING LIST..when push comes to shove the ones with more money dont want to wait for more serious patients. Ya....i said it
This movie exposed the health system in usa
Smart dude man. He had to know the only realistic way for his son to get a match and surgery in time, or live i should say, was for it to be his heart and in that ER. He shouldn't have put a timeline on it, but otherwise its a solid plan.
If you DON"T cry during this movie..Whats wrong with you
I’m no gun expert but if the gun wasn’t loaded the whole time the slide lock would have prevented it from racking unless he pressed down on the slide lock to release it. Just an observation I couldn’t help myself.
“He’s a good kid”
“You’d like him if you got to know him”
Denzel is such a good actor, my god....
Manly tears here... 🤦🏾♂️
"And my son will live"
As a father ir couldn't be said truer than Denzel.
you hear a father pleading for the life of his child!!!!!
I’m crossing the line you crossing the line the whole damn system crossing the line who cares MAYBE YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT.
This scene always got me ..
Love this scene
Literally tearing up.
This scene damn near broke me
The selfness in this movie is so powerful it makes me cry I’m no parent but the lengths parents will go for there child is astounding
Fax fam❤️🙏🏾
Best scene ever! Gets me everything time!!😢😢😢 such a great movie!
"You'd like him"
I don't know how denzel prepared for this, but this acting seems genuine to me, like he imagines the movie plot Happening to his own children. I can't explain it differently
When his friend does the news interview...gotdamn!😢
"I don't accept that. Ever!"🎭🎬🖤☘️🤙🏻
i cry at the part when he told the doctor you would like him.
This was the first time I saw Denzel in performance....I saw this movie with my mom after my dad left when I 6, and ever since I.. I always wondered why I care about so much bullshit, probably a ♋️ thing, but damn..one day I wish to meet him..and just shake hands
