⚡CORRECTIONS⚡ Hey dudes! Just to correct/expand on one or two things I said in the video. Battery tip - 'Resolution down to 720 and FSR up to full' - I've been told that you'll actually need to take the resolution down further to have an effect. Try 960 x 600 instead 👍 Battery tip - 'Half rate shading' - In some games this makes text look super blurry. In the couple games I tested it looked fine but just checked some others today and it deffo makes things much blurrier, so use that as you will! Super sorry for the mistakes/lack of clarification! Hope you understand. Solo team here so mistakes happen 😅 Have a great day!
Here to whip my tip out for all of you to see: if you hold down the "..." Button and move the left stick up and down, you can adjust the brightness without opening the menu, so you won't have half the screen covered by the menu while you're adjusting the brightness
So, pro tip: Framerate and refresh rate should be adjusted in tandem with eachother for ultimate smoothness. So if possible, cap the framerate in the game settings to 30 or 40 if it is a demanding game. If there is no option in the game settings then fall back on the deck option. If you capped to 30fps then your refresh rate should be 60hz because 60 divides into 30, this means you get even frame pacing. 1 frame will be on screen for 2 screen refreshes. If you capped to 40fps then change the refresh rate to 40hz, that way its 1 to 1.
About the resolution: lowering from 800p to 720p will not activate FSR, even if you turned it on. It only adds black bars at the top and bottom, but the resolution "density" is still the same (try switching between linear and FSR at that resolution, nothing should happen). FSR only kicks in for lower resolutions, or when you dock your Deck to a 1080p (or more) monitor/tv. About half-rate shading: while this does save battery, I found that it tends to make text look super blurry. So if you notice blurry text, it's probably not the resolution or FSR, but half-rate shading instead :)
Clicked in your video as I saw the guitars in the background and thought, this guy must know about tweaking settings to get things just right. You opened the video with a genuine greeting and a smile and the content was great! Subscribed. Nice one!

Really great video mate. I ordered my steam deck this week and cannot wait for it to arrive. I've watched a lot of tip/setup videos already but thought your battery saving tip was great. I hadn't even considered motion blur or haptics/rumble as a factor!
Hahaha thanks man! I never know whether I should include those bits, but I’m glad you’re enjoying them 😂 Thanks for the kind word dude, massively appreciate it 🙏🏼
Here's a tip thats been a life saver for me is the night mode timer I have it set for like 20:00 and it takes out the blue light in your screen you can also change how harsh you want the tint to be it's in display options has actually helped my sleeping habits alot 🙂👍
Night modes might actually be bad for you because the orange resembles sunlight. There's no proof that warming the screen helps sleep. It's better to simply not play in bed, because then every time you lay down your brain thinks it's game time.
Thanks for the tips. I just got my deck YESTERDAY! I ordered it last Thursday, and got it yesterday! I was expecting the 1 to 2 weeks like it says on steam! Now after watching tons of how to videos I’m finally ready to get started.
Another battery saver tip is turning down the TDP and GPU Clock settings. It takes some experimentation on a per-game basis, but there's a good chance that you don't need to have the Deck going at 100% to maintain a playable framerate, especially if you're targeting the 30-45fps range. I was able to get a rock solid 30fps in Witcher 3 at native res at mixed medium and high settings with the TDP bumped down to half and GPU a couple of notches down from full. That gave me an estimated battery life of about 3 hours.
Another great upload Mike, thanks. Ive been looking on SDHQ who are slowly compiling deck settings for games. Not in game settings but the minimum wattage, threads fps etc from the right menu button. It's a work in progress but a great one for battery life especially on AAA titles.
The seek girl went full circle, love it 😂 not only are the videos informative and entertaining, they are so well edited that it flows perfectly! Thanks for another great vid! 🎉

Finding a game I don't already have or have played on steam deck has been quite the challenge

I really miss being able to suspend games in sleep mode when I’m playing via cloud for game pass - that alone almost makes me want to buy some games separately!
Thanks for another great video! Let me just add Decky Loader to that list for anyone who's willing to go into desktop mode and enter some commands -- it's amazing for VibrantDeck and ProtonDB Badges!!
Another good tip: the Steam Deck while docked can be woke up via the Steam Controller(via dongle) or keyboard. Useful for lazy couch potatoes that don't want to get up.
Bro showed off Persona 4 Golden in the video. I've never hit the subscribe button so quickly. Hoping I can get my hands on a Deck sometime next year, I got a Switch earlier this year and I love the hybrid setup so I'd love to be able to do the same thing with my PC games!
Cool video, one of the trick I would have added is to use the Steam Link windows app to control your SD remotely, it really makes a world's difference when you can control the SD with a mouse and keyboard directly from your computer.
Great video as always! I also have the 256gb version and regret not buying the 512 gb version because of the screen. I actually bought the non-glass screen protector you mention in your video but it made the picture too fuzzy for my taste. It’s possible to buy the 512gb version non-glare screen as a replacement screen but it’s a quite complicated installation process. Do you dare installing one so I can see how it works out? ;)
Hey man! How're you doing. Oooo i've been playing through 'Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars' recently. Not my usual kinda game but it was developed by Yoko Taro who is one of my favourite game directors. Im really enjoying that! Also about to start God of War Ragnarök 😏 How about you dude?
@@mike.barnes I like to play the AAA titles on my large 4K TV, so the Steam Deck has become my go to device for indie titles, but also for games that I slept on 10 years ago or were Xbox exclusives (like Quantum Break or Sunset Overdrive). In the last few months I purchased a lot of games on sale for less than 5€. They are too many to list them all, but currently in my rotation are Strider, Yoku's Island Express (so charming and chill, this might be your kind of game), Rogue Legacy, Dust: An Elysian Tail, but also Assassin's Creed Rogue or the original F.E.A.R. Voice of Cards has some really cool art, but card games are a genre I never managed to get into. Who knows... maybe the Steam Deck will be my gateway.

@@mike.barnes Metallica, system of a down, megadeth, pantera, and machine head are some of my favourites at the moment. Looking forward to that video!!
For the battery life, graphically less demanding games can easily reach 5-6 hours of gameplay with only a reasonable framerate limit, which those games often do on their own. As I don't like the way FSR looks I stick to native all the time, despite this being the biggest battery saver next to medium settings. I don't dock my Deck, I link it instead. At my PC the Deck still forms a great controller, with it's unique inputs and on my TV I don't mind the upscaled, letterboxed image streamed from Deck. But this requires a solid 5GHz WiFi connection, which just worked for me. After setting up a good Desktop Configuration, my Deck also serves as a Linux tablet, I have it in Desktop Mode about half of the time. With practice duel trackpad typing with trigger clicks becomes very smooth, this comment was typed in this way. One example of things this allows is it becoming a great music player with software like Elisa, even in Game Mode if added there.
Works great man! Obviously you have to get used to playing with controller and using the touchpads for any mouse input, but for msq and casual stuff it's incredible! I do like to ether switch to pc or dock to a monitor while doing raids and stuff though as there's a lot of info for a small screen
Hey mate! DMC5 has been flawless since day one on Deck for me. It has always been super stable and performant for me. I’ve always just had it run default launch settings, so it sounds like your crashing is down to something local on your end. I’ve logged close to 40 hours too. Have you tried resetting the in-game display configuration?
@@piercebros no.. I think it may be a deeper problem than that unfortunately. Some games that should run crash at times and I’m not sure why.. seeing your settings it made me question what could it be. I had to turn my settings down on DMC and SOMETIMES I’ll get a few hours in without a crash but sometimes it crashes back to back.. I’m hoping it isn’t something with the hardware. I really don’t want to have to make a ticket and turn it in to get looked at.
Hey man! Im using 7.0-4? Ah man that sucks, i've played through the first couple levels and it hasn't caused me any problems so far? Are you having any problems in other games?
@@mike.barnes I am, sometimes I’m able to keep playing but other times it crashes after crash after crash. I’m not sure why.. but then there are some games that I can go days playing without a crash like rimworld, terraria, or vampire survivors. It’s weird.. might be a hardware thing idk.
2:10 4321 hours in "Seek Girl 3" is something else... That's 180 days without sleeping, and the game is only 3 years old. Someone's pipe must be red-hot by now!
You should look into music production on the steam deck, if it’s not terrible and you can boot windows I don’t see why I wouldn’t switch to steamdeck and run my daw there. Mobile studio!
I'm pretty sure that if you set your in-game resolution to 720p, the FSR upscaling is doing nothing since the screen itself if 720p (well 1280x800, but that's basically the same). To actually benefit from FSR while in handheld mode, you need to set the resolution even lower, like 540p and then use FSR to upscale to 720p. Otherwise, you're 'upscaling' 720p to 720/800p screen, which does nothing.
Sorry for the mistake my man! I thought that lowering that resolution a little would make a difference but you're right, needs to be lower. Pinned a comment with the corrections. Thanks for pointing that out bud 🙏

@@mike.barnes Man I've been doin great! Crazy busy, actually trying to work out a small video recording space for myself. I do a lot of design work and gettin into game dev, been inspired by you and a few other awesome new creators... got a lot of plates spinning but gonna see what I can do 😁
And yeah a tour vid would be cool for sure!
I hope you and the loved ones are having a great beginning to the holiday season!
Where can I get that desktop wallpaper? I absolutely love it!
Thanks for all of the great tips Mike !! 🤙🏽What game are you playing at the 1:02 mark?
Thank you Carlos! Its called 'Deaths door', I talk about it in this video incase you wanted to learn a lil more about it 😊 ruclips.net/video/QW7jycfpQeQ/видео.html
I really miss being able to suspend games in sleep mode when I’m playing via cloud for game pass - that alone almost makes me want to buy some games separately!
Such a great feature right? I know it's a little basic but it's just my favourite thing!
Thanks for another great video! Let me just add Decky Loader to that list for anyone who's willing to go into desktop mode and enter some commands -- it's amazing for VibrantDeck and ProtonDB Badges!!
Thank you dude! Yesssss great shout, got a lot of love for decky loader in the comments, going to download it today! Thanks so much mate 😄
@@mike.barnes Cheers Mike!
Quality vid as always dude 👌 Quick questions, What game is that at 1:03? And does the non glass anti glare protector scratch easily? Ta
not video poster but it’s deaths door
Thank you my man! Much appreciated 🙏 Tims got it! Deaths door 😊
Really nice videos!
Good video Mike! I really like your sense of humor. Unfortunately, I can't share any tips on Steam Deck because I don't have one 😅
Great video!
Another good tip: the Steam Deck while docked can be woke up via the Steam Controller(via dongle) or keyboard. Useful for lazy couch potatoes that don't want to get up.
Great video mate, because of your videos I’m buying one. 👍🏿
Thank you dude! Ehy nice one! What model did you go for?
Might go for the middle model?
My Steam Deck is arriving in the next week hopefully. I have so many videos and tutorials to watch about all the things this device can do.
love your vids mate
Thank you man! Really appreciate ya 😄
Anti glare screen protector was the best purchase for the deck, makes a world of difference, I'd say it's a must have, I think I got 2 for £5
How noticeable is image quality change?
Yep i got my SD too and love it.
I got the 1tb Sandisk Extreme
Anyone know what game was at 1:03?
Death's Door
Great video as always! I also have the 256gb version and regret not buying the 512 gb version because of the screen. I actually bought the non-glass screen protector you mention in your video but it made the picture too fuzzy for my taste. It’s possible to buy the 512gb version non-glare screen as a replacement screen but it’s a quite complicated installation process. Do you dare installing one so I can see how it works out? ;)
Hey Mike, what have you been playing lately besides DMC?
Good tip? Boot into bios and change the VRAM from the default 1GB/2GB to 4GB. It'll somewhat improve gameplay.
Thanks for the tip dude! 🙏
Hey, 1:05 what game is this? Thanks!
LEGEND!
hey i noticed you've got some guitars on your wall, how long have you been playing and what kind of music do u play?
Hey mate, how're you doing?? Ahh i've been playing for about 13/14 years now. Im actually a music teacher in real life! I honestly play all sorts, really into altrenative RNB at the moment though (Steve lacy/Dijon). How about you dude? Do you play??
@@mike.barnes Im good man! Ive been playing since September last year and ive just mostly been playing a lot of metal. I have a guitar teacher too so ive been learning scales and stuff too to hopefully get better. Would you ever do any guitar related video? I would definitely love to see that!
@@simon-kc1yt Good to hear dude! Sweeeeet! What kinda bands are you into? Funny you ask that, Im actually going to be releasing a guitar related video in the next couple weeks! I noticed quite alot of people that subbed are also into music so hopefully they’ll be down for that kinda content too 😄
@@mike.barnes Metallica, system of a down, megadeth, pantera, and machine head are some of my favourites at the moment. Looking forward to that video!!
Actually so much useful stuff packed in this video! I will definitely be able to update up my lower tier steam deck with some of these tips!! mwhahaha
Hey Katherine! So glad to have been of help 😄 Thanks so much for coming back 😊
Another hilarious video, Mike! Your channel has me currently trying to convince my wife that I need a Deck.
Wish me good luck 😂
Game at 1:08 ?
Babe wake up, new Mike Barnes video dropped! 🥳
❤️
What do you call the game in on 1:04?
Deaths door! Such a great game. I talk about it in my video 'I played 3 Steam Deck games recommended by YOU' incase you wanted to check that out 😄
For the battery life, graphically less demanding games can easily reach 5-6 hours of gameplay with only a reasonable framerate limit, which those games often do on their own.
Does anyone know what game he’s playing at 1:03?

Map one of the rear buttons as a magnifier toggle button. 👍
If you’re looking for an SD card with 35,000 retro games pre-installed, I have a nice 1TB plug and play build for Umbrella Arcades.
What about final fantasy14? How is it good with mmos
Works great man! Obviously you have to get used to playing with controller and using the touchpads for any mouse input, but for msq and casual stuff it's incredible! I do like to ether switch to pc or dock to a monitor while doing raids and stuff though as there's a lot of info for a small screen
hey what proton do you use for DMC? It crashes on me a lot and im having trouble knowing if it's my deck or the game.. Have you beat it on deck?
The next iteration of SD needs to work on the next AMD APU and better battery when it comes to SD 2.
2:10 4321 hours in "Seek Girl 3" is something else...
That's 180 days without sleeping, and the game is only 3 years old.
Someone's pipe must be red-hot by now!
1:05 what's the game is it?
I subscribed!!
You should look into music production on the steam deck, if it’s not terrible and you can boot windows I don’t see why I wouldn’t switch to steamdeck and run my daw there. Mobile studio!
4:16 What game Are you playing here?
Devil may cry
Thats the one 😄
1:11 what game is that?
Deaths door! I talk about it in this video incase you wanted to check that out 😊 ruclips.net/video/QW7jycfpQeQ/видео.html
Holding the steam button and the right stick controls as a mouse. R2 becomes left click.
Tips out and deck docked 🤣
Thanks for sharing your tip 😉
ALL OF USA FELT THAT DOUBLE CHIN JAB 🤣
😂
You had me giggling like a kid at the end
😏
You don't look like a young man that needs to play those sorts of games lol. Thanks for all the tips. Looking forward to getting my deck.
