- Every artist should be able to use their knowledge and skill to create things without the need for a strict reference. You should feel comfortable moving away from a reference photo if it will improve the final painting.
This is a skill that I really struggle with. Instead of copying from a single reference photo and trying to create a painting that looks the same as the reference I thought I would try something new.
I used a variety of images to gain knowledge of my subject then used all that information to create my own original wolf design straight onto the canvas.

I’ve been doing this method since childhood ❤ always studying the subject but rendering my own compositions and poses
It helps to KNOW the ANATOMY of a wolf verses a DOG, Study, learn anatomy of the wild life you plant to paint and not just think using from a photo, helps. I see too many people who have not observed enough, make this mistake. Knowing, the anatomy , helps to know which direction the fur falls over bone and the muscles, Sometimes Museums will let people see their books of reference when they create displays . Or if you know a Taxidermist.
Great advice. Thank you. 😊
I love seeing your progression. It really shows how acrylics can be used layer after layer! Thank you for your time!
Thank you very much! hope you are finding my videos helpful 😁
I love the softness you achieve
absolutely loved watching this painting coming together! thank you for sharing your skill, tips and advice
Your videos have so much quality that I wish you more followers Daniel.👍🏼
Thank you as always🔥
I LOVE this. You make it look so easy!
Amazing video, thank you for uploading
I especially appreciate the suggestion of layering the background. I tend not to give my painting enough layers and I can see now how very beneficial adding layers can be.
very good work with interesting build up of drawing forms and transition to volume with layers of color.
Thank you. Beautiful idea! ❤
Your latest work is incredible, wonderful art 😍
Like the changes you made to the fur on the neck. Such a beautiful wolf painting. Thanks for sharing all your tips & techniques.

so beautiful.. love it
Fantastic!! ❤
This is a very good video! Also I very much agree with what you said about the eye being one of the most important parts of the painting 👍
Thank you! 😁
simplismente espetacular!!!
❤ bellísimaaaaa obra
Superb
Amazing 🎉
I am amazed by this painting. I learned something new, a few things new. The glazing part was new to me and the background doing so many layers was something new also. What I don’t get is how you get the background from mucking up the wolf
Have you tried painting prehistoric mammals? That's a good method of getting away from photo reference... as there isn't any!
I'm practicing using a dagger brush for fur.
I love your videos. What do you personally think of painting by numbers?
Again awesome! When doing glazing with acrylics, do you just thin with water Only or with adding using glazing medium? If not using glazing medium, why not? I thought it supposed to be better than water only.
Can you please do more charcoal vids I really struggle with detail 💜
im trying to paint fur like you...im getting better and better but i use oil... maybe in 10 years ill be as good as you!! lol haha. thank you mann!!!!!
Keep it up! you can use a lot of the techniques I use with oils too, you just need to wait longer for each layer to dry! 😂
😍
How much water/fluid medium do you use so each layer doesn't completely overwhelm the rest?
Hey how long does it take for you to typically make one of your wildlife panitings? i chose art as my school electives and for one of my artworks i wnana do a realistic wolf. or a lion :/ but yeah
Preferred the first position of the wolf head personally. Maybe just me.
what brushes do you use? beautiful painting
Thank you! Here’s a video of my favourite brushes to use ruclips.net/video/LulcufMeULw/видео.html
Hi, it’s me again can I ask what your timescale was to make this one? also I’m interested to know what is your method for creating your reference will it be finding pre-existing photography or using AI and digital methods for creating your references because of the new technology? I understand that this video is about not using one specific reference, but that question sort of refers to your other paintings. I really love realism paining, very relaxing and I’ve been enjoying your videos are very much.
I think it was between 4-6 hours, there’s a real time tutorial for this one on my patreon. I think Ai is here we may as well use it. I like to think of it as a way to brainstorm compositions or help with things like lighting rather than generating an exact reference. Then use your knowledge and abilities to improve on and create something brand new 😁 most of the time for my more photo realistic work I am working from a direct reference. But with things like this it’s just years of practice and studying different photos to understand the anatomy of the subject I am trying to paint
@@StudioWildlife thats great thank you so much for your response :)
Do you prefer acrylic or oil paint ? It's beautiful !
Thank you! I prefer acrylic dye to the faster drying time but I do enjoy working in oils too
Very impressive work, how long did this take to complete and how many hours do you think you spent on it?
Thank you, I would say this one took around 4-6 hours. Because I was filming for my patreon page the process takes a bit longer
@@StudioWildlife cool thanks 👍
😮😮😮😮😮
Is the reason you use acrylics instead of oil is for the quick drying time?
Pretty much, when I use techniques like this that involve lots of layers acrylics are my go to. If I’m doing a painting in only 1 or two layers I’ll do a base in acrylics then oils over the top
Will this work with oils ?
Definitely although you might have to wait for each layer to dry. This video shows how I’d do something similar to this in oils in one sitting

Can these pictures be purchased?
Yea they can, a lot of my work can be purchased through my website studiowildlife.com. This piece isn’t up yet but you can contact me directly through my website if you’d like more info about it
Do you have a personal preference of your subject facing either left or right?
Not that I have consciously thought of but thinking back to previous paintings I do a lot facing towards the left! 😁
You look like ASBYT
I only paint,with a feeling...and it works without reference..
@5:39 the wolf temporarily looks the other direction. Must be 2 different versions of the same painting
I just flipped the video to keep you on your toes 😂
At the chance of sounding stupid ...how do I join your patreon
Here’s a link to it! the tiger tier has all of the videos :)
