Sandy, truly well done. This type of video should be noted with colleges, even to any person asking for clear and instructive guidance to an introduction to the mechanics. Truly well done, tip of the hat to you.
Thank you so much for this great video! I had to do the same thing on my Skoda Fabia 1.2 HTP (engine code AWY). Your video was a really great way to get the big picture before reading up on the details in the repair manual. The whole operation took me four days, because I was very careful with everything, did not know the workshop so well, and encountered some minor problem. But the engine purrs like a kitten and I am happy as can be! Thank you again, Sandy!
I guess im asking randomly but does any of you know a way to log back into an Instagram account..? I somehow lost my login password. I love any tricks you can offer me!
@Keaton Hezekiah I really appreciate your reply. I found the site on google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff now. I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
When you have a problem with compression in cylinders - VAG detected sporadic misfires - problem may be caused by bad piston rings. After head (valve) repair i have problem with new misfires and oil consumption. It's about 0,5 l for 500 km. Compression measuring detected low compression on second cylinder. My engine was completely repaired (head+ new piston rings, chemical cleaning of pistons, control of main bearrings etc...) and after that operation i haven't any problem. My recomendation is - when engine has got more then 120 000 km and you prepare head repair - you must change piston rings!
Superb. Thanks. My Missus yellow Polo has done the same thing so about to do hers. Great idea with the Instant Gasket syringe too. Be glad of an eBay link to a similar Valve Compressor Tool to the one you used if you've got time
the whole job took ages a bit fiddly, I never showed putting timing chain back on but the best method is to install guides, loosely install camshaft pulley, release tensioner then tighten up camshaft pulley bolt
hi, nice work! do you have an outline exactly what position must be camshaft and crankshaft mounts when the timming chain is new? i lost the old positions...
May I ask you where you got the instructions about tightening the head bolts? My engine code is BBM and i want to check to make shure its the same way for my car.
Hi mate love the vids! I’m planning to do a head gasket change on my 1.4 tsi 2011 polo. Do you have any advice or pointers carrying out such a job? I have all relevant tools a little experience, using this as a way of expand my mechanical skills. I’m sort of looking for a how to guide or just general information as you do have a lot of knowledge. Any advice will be helpful thanks!! P.s very informative vids, subscribed!!
I have taken the head off, it appears that the camshaft has a notch in it where it makes with the sprocket but nothing on the sprocket side, any ideas how or if the sprocket locks to the camshaft, surely it cant just be by the pressure of the bolt? Any help welcome
Thanks for sharing this. My daughter's polo has the dreaded cylinder 3 issue and low compression. I've replaced a turbo on a vehicle before and am quite happy working on cars, but is this a job that can be tackled by a home mechanic? Whilst the engine is stripped would you replace the timing chain and sprockets? The vehicle has done 55k
Yes this job can be done at home because I'm a DIY'er too. Good practice to change chains and sprockets make sure u buy timing tools from eBay as it saves a lot of guess work, all the best, sandy
Hello. Did you ever hear of this problem? Someone wants to sell me Polo with an exact motor like this, but I was instructed to never park the car with the shifter in gear. Only in neutral. They told me that if you leave the car in the gear, it happens that hydraulic chain tensioner tends to get loose and make a mess of the engine. It seems ridiculous to me, but I don't have a clue if it is true, or there is some problem with a particular car. Thank you for the answer.
Thanks for this helpful video, I have a polo 1.2 2004 with afault code p0303 I changed the spark plugs and coil ingintions but still the misfire on cylinder 3, So do you think from head gasket?
I think it was 2-3 hours, I had problems with 1 Allen key bolt in inlet manifold which had rounded drilled it out like this video suggested ruclips.net/video/Xob4hNPbypw/видео.html. Any advice just ask me cheers sandy PS u need along splined bit to get in to head bolts
Great video, I changed the sparkplugs on mine and found all three plugholes had oil in them before I removed the plugs. I have recently smelt oil when engine was hot but could not trace it till now as there was never any drips on the driveway. There doesn't appear to be oil coming from the rocker cover. I watched your video to get an idea of what the engine looks like without the rocker cover. When you are adding the silicone gasket @ 11:20 is it possible that the tapped holes near the spark plug holes are tapped all the way through and without gasket around these holes oil can get into the plugholes?
Dundee Dek the most likely place to get oil leaking into spark plug holes is from a failed rocker cover gasket apart from that maybe seeping head gasket or head crack ! But I would go for rocker cover first, thanks for watching cheers sandy
Hi! Great video! I am about to do this same job on my 06 polo. Is there any other special tools that I should have other than the timing tools and the camshaft holder?
+pantsoamateo if you have to adjust the timing, check pimpowski.de/Steuerkette_wechseln.htm and pimpowski.de/Steuerkette_wechseln_markierungen.html for further instructions. There are three pieces of special tools you'll need.
Is this the result of the cylinder 3 misfire problem that seems to plague these engines? What is the total cost of having the head machined and rebuilt by the way? Good video 👍
Hello, I've the 12 valves... It's drinking about 1 liter oil in 700km! Compression is perfect. Is it possible a oil consumption from the head, valves seals? Thanks.
Hello , thanks for the tips , i have an engins block marked AMY looks pretty much the same as the one in the vidéo. My pistons are cooked ans melted as well. I removed the oïl pan ans the head but i'm stick now cause it seems i cannot acces the big end rods. Plus it is say in the repaire manual that on the 1.2l 6 valves you should not removes the crank bearings. Any idea?
it's thought on this engine that the use of inferior metal from Asia plus the close coupled catalyst cause's the build up of extreme heat around the valve seats, sandy
sandy, The Haynes manual says to remove the whole sump, yet noticed you only removed the sump bolts that attach to the timing cover. Is there any risk of leaks doing it this way and what sealant did you use?
Is it correct to insert the crank locking tools before removing the crank pulley as I just tried that and whilst trying to locate the camshaft lock I managed to snap the end off the tool. The tool bought from ebay seems to be of really rubbish quality metal. Just curious whether these tools are designed to take load.
Hello, my friend Roddy the mechanic never relies on locking tool to hold crankshaft whilst turning bolt as he said they are all made of rubbish cheers sandy
As it's the camshaft sensor that has snapped I can still strip it down as I'll need to reset the timing given that the camshaft needs to come out to get the head refurbished. In the meantime, Draper do a set for (81413). They look like proper metal rather than pig iron.
Quick question. I’m doing the chain on my 3 cylinder bmd and have locked in the camshaft and flywheel to set the timing. Now when I take them out and rotate the engine 360 degrees I can’t get them both to fit. Any ideas where I’m going wrong? Thanks
sandy anderson managed to sort it so cylinder 1 was at TDC and both tools could be inserted with ease. Put all back together and now car won’t start. Barely any compression. Where would I have gone wrong?
Great video, thanks. Did you just replace the exhaust valves? Do the guides just go in with a drift? Were the valve seats redone with cutting paste or machined? Thanks again
The tool in the crankshaft sensors hole must be retain the ax or i must lock with something the pulley in the front side and beat with the hammer the 18 mm Key? Thanks!
Does anyone knows what is the name and propose for the hose/pipe with white filter I suppose that got disconnected at 2:28? I have a problem with it....It slipped of the engine with all the metal part...
Hoping you might be able to answer a question here Sandy as I followed the Haynes manual to the book , but I still have a misfire on cylinder 3 :-( I used the 2 tools for the timing, but is it possible if both timing tools where correctly installed to have the timing 180 degrees out? My next plan is to do a leak down test as the head and valve stem seals were done by a cylinder head company so I am at a loss why I still have a problem. Any pointers would be welcomed.
If the car runs your timing should be ok, do a compression test or better a leak down to confirm where air is escaping. Did u swap coils does fault move? Can u hear a skip when u crank it over with fuel pump fuse removed or injectors unplugged
Hi need to do this to my 06 polo 1.2 6v just had compression test done due to loss of power after driving for awhile cylinder 1 109 PSI cylinder 2 121 PSI cylinder 3 25 PSI so serious problem could you list all tools I will need to do the job or where I could find out Thanks Tom
