  • Last year Puro de Surales single-handedly aware'd me that 1) Ecuador makes cane juice rum and 2) it can be friggin' amazing. I absolutely loved that bottle ( • Cane Juice World Tour,... ), to the degree that it easily found its way into my top five from last year ( • The Top Ten Spirits of... ). And now I'm delighted to report that it has some competition.
So that's the theme of today's flight, two relatively new cane-juice based rums from various towns in Ecuador - with Surales also hopping in at the last second, just for fun. Stats:
    - Ecuador Malacatos Single Origin Rum (Malacatos, Loja, Ecuador; bottled by 1423 SBS Origin; wild-fermented, column-distilled cane juice, distilled in 2022; 57% ABV), 87/100
    - El Amparo Rum (Jipijapa, Manabi, Ecuador; farmed and distilled by Carlos Baque Zorrilla; wild-fermented, column-distilled cane juice, L. 1/23, bottled circa 2023; 57.5% ABV), 87/100
El Amparo from Velier is super-unique: imagine the cane juice rum you'd break out for your amaro-loving friends from Greenpoint and you'd be pretty close. The Malacatos is more classical savory caney stuff, a hair on the austere side but really beautiful (especially with a splash of water). I don't think either matches the Surales, but both are total bangers and all three are well worth your attention.

Really enjoying your videos. It would be fun to see a video of your whole collection.

Yikes, I'm afraid that would just be a video of a whole bunch of boxes and industrial shelving... 😂

Good stuff. I would advise to lock the focus on the camera though, it is hunting quite a bit.

Yikes, sorry. Shows what happens when I try to set up too quickly...

Unrelated, but do you think you’d do a white dog/unaged whiskey video? I think it’d be neat. Also, I watched another one of your videos where you lightly lectured on Hume’s Of the Standard of Taste, which as a phil student I enjoyed. Can we get another philosophy vid or would it be too off topic

I do have some new make to review! I dunno, I suppose I'm holding out for poitin and other examples I can probably rate well. 😅
As for philosophy content, be very very careful what you wish for my friend...

Rum fire is not sold in Alabama, and is hard to get in the South. I can get it but it would cost around $65 with shipping. Would you say it is like Caroni at all? I really miss readily available Caronis. I've been subsisting on samples from MoM and they are damned expensive in their own right. Maybe I should be satisfied with the Wray and Neph overproof that I can get literally a mile away from my house.

It's terrific but no, it's not going to be particularly Caroni-like: Caroni is intensely industrial and smoky, like a tire fire, while Rum Fire is much more fruity and high-toned. That said, it's hard to think of what really does it better: old Angostura/TDL? Sherried clairin? Vendome-still rum from St. Lucia? They're all closer, but they don't quite nail it....

@@differentspirits4157 Thanks! You helped me find this rum. It's a seven year old from Trinidad:
Nose Offers golden syrup and black treacle. Some cocoa, spices. Bourbon smoke, char, vanilla.
Palate Dark chocolate, burnt sugar. Tiramisu. Creamy.
Finish Crème brûlée and custard, a little cocoa and coffee, a hint of tar.

      Signature #2 Boutique-y
Nose Through oily walnuts, rich molasses, dark chocolate, oaky tannins and spicy nutmeg there are pitted Medjool dates, raisins, papaya and banana bread.
Palate More woody spice, a hint of engine oil and sweet tobacco makes way for coconut husk, juicy pineapple and roasted apricot. An underlying note of sugarcane is present among darker notes of game meat, coffee beans and returning dark chocolate, before herbal notes of black tea and eucalyptus emerge.
Finish Salted caramel, tropical fruit and drying oak.
Overall Dark, deep and refined, this is one delightful blend. The mightiest of Mai Tais awaits.
