Raspberry Pi LESSON 1: First Boot and Configuring the Desktop, Panel, Menu and Preferences

  • Announcing the Most Awesome Raspberry Pi Lessons of All Times! This time we RUMBLE!
In this lesson I will take you through first boot of your pi, and then show how to improve the desktop appearance.
In this class series, we will be using the most excellent Sunfounder Ultimate Raspberry Pi kit, available at here: (Affiliate Link)
    amzn.to/3tSk9Mo
or for our UK friends, amzn.to/3I5d401
You guys get your hardware ordered so you can follow along at home!
You will also need a Raspberry Pi. I suggest the Raspberry Pi 4. If you do not already have one, this is the most suitable gear I could find:
    amzn.to/3pBMfKm
The Raspberry Pi's are sort of pricy right now, so you can look on ebay or elsewhere to see if there are any deals. You will need a SD card. If you do not already have one, this is a good one:
    amzn.to/3KcXTn2
I like using a wireless keyboard and mouse to have fewer wires. You can certainly use your USB keyboard and mouse, but if you want a nice wireless one, this one works on the pi.
    amzn.to/36Rv9Sk
You guys can help me out over at Patreon, and that will help me keep my gear updated, and help me keep this quality content coming:

I swear I always come back whenever I need any tutorial because I think you have the best tutorials on youtube. Thank you very much for your time and effort! Many of my friends were so surprised at how much I know and recommend your video. Although they complained about it being boring or too long, I think your video is perfect to weed out annoying people who only wanna do surface level works.

Sir, your contribution to education is of immeasurable and timeless value to all anyone who is passionate about technology and believe you deserve at least 10 million subscribers ( ...and 10 million is not your value, its just a number). I have bought a umpteen number of courses on many sites and many of them are excellent, but none of those excellent courses are even comparable to yours !!. Amazingly MY Pi WORKS just as Paul said it should! And I am using a monitor, keyboard and mouse scrounged from neighborhood front porch pickups! Some of the setup screens lacked some functions that were in the video, but I suspect it is because I have not updated my operating system. After all the warnings about corrupting the SD card, I am afraid to turn the power off to the Pi. I think this lesson should include shutdown instructions. Many thanks to Paul for this most excellent lesson on bringing the Pi to life!

Great kickoff to this series! I'm already watching it for the 2nd time. I always had a dream of installing a Pi in the dashboard of my truck. My wife and I travel around the States with our truck camper and I thought I could make a cool control panel. I would like to connect a cable to the OBDII port to display info that the dashboard doesn't give me. Maybe connect GPS also. I would also like to make it a screen for rear and side cameras. Maybe it could be connected to a cellular router. I'm sure you had nothing like this in mind but I'm hoping by the time we are done that I could figure this stuff out myself. I have a USB GPS unit that I've played around with already that I was able to read location signals. I got the info for that from your first Arduino classes. I've seen people install Android Auto on a Pi and do some of this but I would rather do my own and create my own system.

So Arduino is doing all the analog reads for rpm and speed, then pi needs to get that data translate it to a hud. Then the pi can do the dashcam stuff aswell. So homework back at you Paul..hehe

Paul, you're an absolute godsend!! Thank you for spending so much time helping us all with the configuration. It was a bit of a challenge for me as it took over 6 hours to write the image to the SD card. I had expected it to be quite slow given that Windows 11 took 6 days and five nights to install.
I also only have one monitor so I have to keep switching the display back and forth between HDMI1 and HDMI2. I could try watching you on my iPad but then munchkin-size would be reduced to amoeba-size. I don't know whether I should invest in another monitor. Would I be able to complete all these lessons using ssh and VNC or do you advise that I would be better off with 2 monitors? The trouble is that if I have 2 monitors then I will need a bigger desk, and if I have a bigger desk then I will need a bigger house :-(
Just one other thing, the Window Border tab isn't there when I go into Theme & Appearance. I thought that maybe I had inadvertently wrecked some of the settings so I started again with a clean image but had the same thing happen. Do any of you guys have the same problem? And, if so, what did you do about it?

Thanks for an excelent lesson. I learned a lot about the Raspberry Pi desktop and how to configure it.
When we start to learn how to use the GPIO pins, I think you also should spend some time explaining the difference between 5 volt devices like Arduino Uno, and 3.3 volt devices like Raspberry Pi. Can some components/parts in the Elegoo starter kit for Arduino Uno be used with the Pi? And what about the other way around?

That will come into play on future lectures about debugging.

I already have Bullseye on my RPI4. Will this work with your lessons as camera instructions have now changed.

System Tray: everything below the System Tray is right justified (I think). I like the Separator, because it puts a little gray line instead of the Spacer. (I think). Thanks for doing this lesson series.

Kit is ordered! Even though I have a lot of these components, there were several I don't have and the kit is a good value for all the stuff you get. No way I could purchase the ones that I am missing individually for the same money. Looking forward to the course.

Yes, for me it seems over time parts in my old kit get lost, broken or messed up. I like getting a fresh new kit every once in a while. Seems I never have enough of the little jumper wires.
