    I never let my vehicle get below 1/2 tank before I fill up. Never know when you might get stuck in traffic or in the snow, good idea to carry a small container of gas in rear of truck to help someone else out especially in the winter months and snow belt
    Your are exactly right on all points on this video.
    I know lots of people that will go until the fuel light comes on. Remember that the gas lubricants your fuel pump and if you are in a habit of running it down to empty, you WILL be putting a fuel pump on sooner than later
    Great video

    When you have 1/4 tank, find ⛽️ When you get to 1/8 tank your fuel pump isn't completely submerged & isn't being cooled, that reduces its life expectancy.

    Interesting topic. After Hurricane Helene so many of the gas stations in GA were closed w/ out power so a lot of people learned the hard way. I learned that on Chevy Equinox, fuel light comes on at 50 miles indicated range. When the counter goes below 20 miles, it just switches to - - double dash and stops the countdown. It didn't shut off, but coughed/hesitated from a stop at very near what would have been just beyond those last 20 miles.

    You really never want to run your tank below 3/4 empty because the electric fuel pump in the tank uses the fuel to cool the pump. The pump will last longer if it's kept cool and not hot.

    On the vehicles that I have owned that ran out the range was 12 miles to 38 to 56 miles. All were ford's- focus edge. F150
    BUT. had 1988 Bronco that gauge went below E and I drove back and forth to work (12 miles round trip) for 5 days. Never cut off. When I filled up put 35.6 gallons gas in 36 gallon tank. I don't think any gauges/informational displays are reliable to the point to test what they are indicating. If I remember correctly, the fuel gauges don't actually touch bottom of fuel tank, so you probably have around gallon gauge doesn't pick up. Like most viewers say, put gas in when below 1/4 tank. Nice video.

    THe fuel pump uses gas to cool itself. Also every tank has a sediment area that collects sediment and water! When u refill with low level frequently u r a candidate for clogged and frozen lines and a low tank condensates much more also! When that happens u earned it!

    I have a 2015 SuperDuty gasser (6.2L) and a 2023 Toyota Rav 4, and I don't make a habit of running the gas down to "empty," but I have on occasion when they were both new filled up at the empty message, and comparing the amount of fuel added to the published tank capacity, applying hand calculated MPG numbers, I estimate having about 50 more miles of range at the empty point.

  • @enonek2960
    @enonek2960 2 месяца назад

    Steve, thanks so much for this video. Having owned a Corolla, and now a RAV4, I find the REFUEL message and the miles remaining on the RAV4 display extremely frustrating on a road trip ( wife freaks-out). It always comes on when I have a little more than 3 gal in the tank. Thinking my MPG's suck I'll run another 50 miles, before I fill-up and its taking 12.4 - 13.5 gal to fill the 15.9 gal tank. I've learned to treat that REFUEL message like it was the red section of my the fuel gauge on my old Corolla. Now, I just think of it as letting me know I have a 1/5 tank left.

    I just paid $1,200 to replace the fuel pump in my 2012 Prius C after the engine died. A few years earlier I had to get the fuel tank cleaned after the car died. In that case the mechanic initially thought it was a bad fuel pump, but later determined it was just a very dirty fuel tank. I’ve never been good about managing the fuel levels in the car. I often ran the tank very low and frequently tried to get an extra gallon or so in the tank when filling up. After 302k miles on the car I guess these bad practices are starting to catch up with me.

    I had one time I went about 35 miles past 0 miles to empty in a 2013 Rav4. I was in northern Arkansas on a Sunday morning and had run through several small towns before I found one that had an gas station, let alone an open one. Later, I had a 2016 Mustang GT and got down to about 10 miles to empty and initially thought I could make to the office and would fill up on the way back, but because I was new to the car, I decided to hit the gas station on the way in. I'm glad I did because I proceeded to put 15.75 gallons in my 16 gallon gas tank. No way would I have made it to the office and back. That Mustang probably had the most accurate gas gauge of any car I've ever owned, at least on the bottom half of the tank.
    One other point, he mentioned don't let the fuel get too low because the pump might pick up any grime or debris in the bottom of the tank. Well, the fuel pickup is always at the bottom of the tank. Whether the tank is full or not, any debris in the tank that's going to settle to the bottom of the tank will be picked up by the fuel pump and probably already has been by the time you get down to the low fuel warning light.
    Edit: That's what the fuel filter is for.

    It really depends on the car. On my Versa, you had better get gas at 1/8 tank or it won't start on a hill. In my diesel Cruze I could go over 100 miles once it said zero miles to empty.

  • @teekay_1
    @teekay_1 2 месяца назад

    Simple answer... "depends on the car". No car acts exactly the same. I've had cars that would have problems when it got to zero, and I've had cars that could go 100 miles after it got to zero.
    Here's what you need to do:
    1) Know the fuel capacity of your car (it might be in the owner's manual, if not look on the web)
    2) Calculate your average fuel economy (hopefully you know how to do that)
    3) When it hits zero, fill up the tank and note the difference between how many gallons you put in and the tank capacity
    4) Multiple the gas left in the tank by your fuel mileage and there you go.
    It ain't that hard.

    It’s a bad idea to run that low on fuel. Any contaminants in the tank will concentrate under the fuel pickup that could cause the screen to clog resulting in an expensive repair. With more fuel in the tank, the debris could be anywhere in the tank not causing a problem.

      I think it's just different from one manufacturer to another, same with different models.
