All other major sports leagues see lack of parity as a bad thing, and they take steps to avoid it. FBS College football is the only sport that seems hell-bent on consolidating as much power as possible to the fewest schools/conferences as possible, while telling the rest that they can go eff themselves.

Hey, I went to Stanford and ... OK, yeah, you're mostly right. Stanford is not a football move, obviously. It does offer a lot for a conference to brag about in terms of academics and non revenue sports, but it isn't going to move the needle in a football media deal. Cal is, if anything, worse in that regard.

This Depressed Ginger guy keeps pumping the BIG propaganda. I have a good feeling he is a BIG guy. You noticed he will tell you all the reasons in the world why Stanford and Cal joining the ACC makes zero sense because the two teams don't add any value to the ACC, while on the other hand, it makes perfect sense for BIG to add the two teams on top of UCLA and USC from CA. He never explains how the networks and BIG can justify the additions without showing where exactly the additional eyeballs and money will be coming from.
Only those asleep at the wheel did not realize BIG would add Oregon and UW from the get-go when it added USC and UCLA. Noticed how fast the BIG added Oregon and UW once the four corner schools left for the BIG12? BIG had everything planned way ahead. It just did not want to risk getting sued by the PAC for tortious interference.
If it were all about academics, the BIG would have added Stanford, UCLA, USC, and Cal in that order, not USC, UCLA, Oregon, and UW. BIG wanted the L.A. and CA market and they have it now. Let's ignore for the moment that no one in CA cares much about college sports. So how will FOX, NBC, and CBS find the extra $140MM for Stanford and Cal in a few years?
Lastly, Stanford funds tons and tons of non-revenue sports that no other school in this country currently does or will ever bother to do. So BIG, solely for being greedy just for greedy sake and being hubristic, will gladly add Stanford because of its superior academics and its success with non-revenue sports that almost no one really cares at all?
And don't get me started with Cal.
The math and eyeballs are not there, so I don't get this Depressed Ginger's logic, or the complete lack thereof, at all.
It's obvious that he loves some BIG hurbis.

Personally, I like the PAC West theory. IMO that's actually the best fit for Stanford, WAZZU, Oregon State, and Cal. None of those schools have ever truly been big power houses in football. If the PACifist 12 and MWC were to merge, the "PAC West" name wouldn't work since there's already a D2 conference in California/Hawaii which already uses that name. But, with that said, if there's a merger, they'd have to keep the MWC name over the PACifist 12 name considering how badly Larry Scott and George Kliavkoff (and to a lesser extent, the school's presidents) have tarnished the PACifist 12 branding. Whether or not the merged P12/MWC conference retains Power Five status would ultimately depend on how the NCAA sees it.

Honestly, because of travel, MWC makes a lot of sense for Stanford and Cal short term. Stanford could straight up pull a ND - join the MWC except for football, which it would remain independent in. If the MWC says no deal, then they can ask the Big West or the WCC. I think they pretty much have to join *someone* for basketball, to qualify for March Madness (even though they aren't going anyway, not any time soon), but for other sports it really doesn't matter that much, they just need someone to compete with, to qualify for national tourneys. For most sports you'd honestly rather travel to San Jose State or Santa Clara than to Maryland or Nebraska.

[NOTE: I'm a modestly knowledgable college football fan, but there are likely many other commenters who have read these remarks whose expertise exceeds mine.]
The addition of Stanford & Notre Dame would provide an additional storied rivalry (Stanford vs ND) plus allow Stanford to continue its rivalries with UCLA, USC, UWashington & UOregon. This would also allow continuing potentially great rivalries with UMichigan, Ohio State & (prospectively) Northwestern, another academically superior private university.

Why does everyone ignore that ND is contractually OBLIGATED to join the ACC if they decide to join a conference? Unless the ACC dissolves or ND sues to get out of the contract (that will be a 9 figure shot in the shorts for ND), they're ACC bound conference wise.

I think you're confusing ND's obligations to the ACC when it comes to their Olympic sports and not its football team. I haven't looked too deeply into it, so I could be wrong, but ND football remains independent and go to any conference it wants to without any contractual concerns to ACC.

@@dgart7434 You may be right on that. However, we are talking an existential crisis for the ACC. They will try and force NDs hand. ND is too big a brand and too valuable to just let them walk away on the cheap. The prestige of ND joining the ACC would instantly save the conference, in my opinion. FSU and Clemson would probably pipe down and play ball and allow the ACC to poach what best schools are left of the G5 to keep pace with the Big 12, 10, and SEC.

Each pod plays a different pod each year. 4-team conference playoff with winners of each pod, but winners are matched up with the winner of a pod they didn't play in the regular season (to avoid rematches). 2030 B1G replaces underperforming/low value schools with ACC schools, if they can get out of their deal. Power five status is dependent on how much money you make. If they could get a tv deal that paid 15-20 million per school, because of the 4 pac teams and the best of the MW, then add NCAA tourney units and CFP money, how would they not then be power 5? Plus, the current CFP deal would owe the PAC 12 one 6th of the CFP deal

The logical thing seems to be for Notre Dame and Stanford to join the Big 10 together. They can have one of the protected rivalry games assuming that stays a thing. I imagine Notre Dame vs USC would be another. Notre Dame's tv deal expires after 2024 and how that all plays out is going to determine a lot. NBC is already part of the deal for the Big 10. The logical fit for Notre Dame has always felt like the Big 10 but they seem to fight it tooth and nail. I think if they join a conference it is going to be the ACC. From what I gather they are trying to push the ACC to accept Stanford and Cal. I'm not sure why ND even cares about Cal but apparently they do. Notre Dame to the ACC for football would obviously be a HUGE win for the ACC. It would be great for the Big 10 too but doesn't feel as important.

For someone who's a Big 10 fan (i.e., Yours Truly) I'm confounded why the decision-makers at ND would say to themselves, "Why would we want to ally ourselves with historic (& locally relevant) opponents such as Indiana U, Michigan State, UMichigan & Ohio State U when we can travel hundreds of miles to face obscure irrelevant opponents such as Pittsburgh, Boston College, Virginia Tech, FSU, Wake Forest and Austin Community College?"

I don't thnk the B1G is deliberately moving in stages. There's no reason to. It makes more sense to make your moves all at once then sign your media deal and wait for the next renewal. They were meh on UW and UO. There was zero reason to wait a year on them if they really wanted them. After the Apple deal was presented, UW and UO had to leave. They couldn't afford to be lost behind a paywall. The most likely option was the Big 12. Well, that allows the Big 12 and ESPN to compete for viewers in the Pacific window. Reluctantly, I think they took UW and UO to head off ESPN on the west coast.
If they really wanted UW and UO this whole time, why not take them when they took USC and UCLA? Why not build in escalators in your media deal if you wanted to wait a year? They did neither.
It was a rather lackluster, reactionary move. Not as poor as adding Maryland and Rutgers (Jesus!) but up there. They've still got a shrinking population problem that they are addressing in the most round about way possible.

The B1G was “meh” on UO and UW
      being brought in with USC/UCLA
because they would have expected full shares like the LA schools which would have cut into
the share size for each current school. When the PAC collapsed
The B1G saw UO and UW could be had at reduced shares and Fox was willing to keep everyone whole by adding money since they wanted more brands in the B1G.
The B1G would have been happy to wait 2 years while integrating USC/ UCLA into the scheduling.
But Fox saw an opportunity to keep ESPN out of the west coast
market by keeping UO/ UW out of
the Big 12 or a surviving PAC

Notre Dame is the lynchpin. I think Stanford definitely and probably Cal, too, go where Notre Dame goes. ND can save the ACC by joining in football (Stanford and Cal tagging along). Or ND could destroy the ACC by joining the Big10 (Stanford and Cal tagging along). Or ND stands pat and we are stuck in this strange limbo (this is most likely for the time being). ND is probably the one school that can pull off independence long term, and seems content to do so (Stanford could probably be independent for a few years in a pinch). Florida State however seems none too eager to sit around waiting for ND. That situation might be messy.

I'm all for a Pac-whatever re-alignment. Make it a purely western league. As some have suggested, team up with Boise State, Fresno State, San Diego State, UNReno, UNLV and San Jose State. With regional matchups like these, people would actually GO to the games. Boise and Fresno are both just as good as Cal and Stanford now. It could provide a much needed boost in revenue to the lesser schools, and, let's face it, Cal and Stanford don't need the money. They may not be invited to the BCS, but, if it was up to me, I wouldn't go if they asked me. The BCS is what KILLED college football, and there's no reason to even further dilute regional rivalry and tradition any more than it has been. If you can't beat 'em, f*ck 'em!

They go independent, they can schedule their former Pac-12 members because they are not the threat to these teams and there will be two non conference games available to each team. They will be following whatever Notre Dame does, that is the team Notre Dame is closely related to. The Big 10 doesn't want Cal. They really want Stanford because of their great non revenue teams and that is where their conference will gain in prestige. Stanford is picking up on recruits, so they can stay independent for a long time. They even have much more money than Notre Dame. There is a possibility that if their new coach can get excitement into that program, they may get a helping hand from Notre Dame to get some contract offer from NBC in the future. Stanford could bring money from endowments from many of their olympic graduates, but that only helps Stanford, not the conference. They are such a unique school, they should stay independent. The basketball team could schedule any west coast team as an independent, and try to win enough games to get into the NIT or maybe the big tourny itself, but they should remain an independent. Most colleges in America earn anywhere from a few hundred thousand to upwards of 100 million dollars a year, and a lot of that income comes from football, which is why they chase the dollars. Stanford earns 725 million dollars a year and that is not including football
