I for one would like asteroid collisions to be close to science fiction. I said close because smaller rocks would still hit us but the damage is next to none. Best to only reserve space threat concerns to solar flares.

All of you saying it's impossible? It's impossible that after impact it could break apart and cause a domino effect? Isn't this the reason they don't like the idea of blowing one up? and are hoping to just knock it off course? Think about it, if they are hoping to knock it off course with an object of this size why is it stupid to think a pieace the same size could potentially break off or multiple smaller pieces, which could then move off course , hitting another and then so on? Which in turn could eventually cause an asteroid to collide with earth, even an asteroid that was not on course to collide with earth? Just because the probability is low doesn't make it "impossible". Were the scientists who did the nasa briefing just bullshitting? There is always at least a .1 percent chance of anything happening . Even they didn't rule that completely out one of the guys literally stated this being the reason as to why they didn't like the idea of blowing one up? To say otherwise is ignorant, especially when you are talking about science.

That asteroid will move out of it's natural course and hit other space bodies and it will chains continuously until it hit a comet that will hit Earth which is supposedly to fly outside our solar system but because of this it changes it's path towards us.

that literally is impossible given that this is the moon of an asteroid and the spacecraft is not nearly big enough to do that.

I hope we get positive results in a few weeks as that’s when they’ll be able to see if the asteroid was actually deflected or not. The thing is timing, if we have 10 years to prepare for a civilization ending collision, that’s probably enough time to prepare and deflect it. If we only have a month, then good luck.

Also, who says that these things are on a rigid schedule--one every 60 million years? Guaranteed?!? No, its prudent to be prepared. When we look at the history of our earth, large-scale asteroid impacts like the one that wiped out the dinosaurs happen every 20 million years, the last one was 66 million years ago, we are way past do, its better to be safe than sorry.
