As the nation dealt with the darkness of the Great Depression, a Black leader by the name of Father Major Jealous Divine rose from the shadows. His message resonated with many as he identified himself as God in the human flesh.
Preaching the power of the mind and positive thinking, the Peace Mission Movement was created. Followers would give their life to Father Divine, relinquishing all worldly possessions as the entered communal living. While his movement wouldn’t last long, Father Divine goes down in history as an influential leader who was able to provide - albeit through controversial moves, - shelter, food, and other necessities to Black people during the Great Depression.
In this episode of Black History In Two Minutes or So hosted by Henry Louis Gates Jr. - with additional commentary from Judith Weisenfeld of Princeton University, Imani Perry of Princeton University, and Hasan Jeffries of Ohio State University - we look at a pivotal leader who said all the right things but whose provocative actions led to his demise.
Black History in Two Minutes (or so) is a 9x nominated and 4x Webby Award winning series.

I live down the street from an apartment complex he owned for the poor. Interesting figure. I believe we still have a group that are his “followers” that live on a compound here in PA.
What they aren’t mentioning in this video is that he was a cult leader. He did many good things that should be remembered. But remembering only the good with someone who claims to be god is dangerous.

My father was physician to the Peace Mission in Philadelphia in the early 1960s. Father Divine and His followers claimed and believed in perfect health, but my father spoke often in praise of Father Divine at banquets so that he could be accepted and provide them with the medical care that they needed, without making a doctrinal fuss about it. Father Divine's followers were lovely and sincere people, who proved by example that the communist and utopian ideal of working for all and sharing for all could easily be maintained within a spiritual context.

@@ElCineHefe Interesting video clip. It's fiction, of course--we don't know what was actually said. Jim Jones was responsible for his own beliefs, and for the insanity of his mass murder. None of that was the responsibility of God, or of Father Divine, or of me, for that matter. Be intelligent, and only accuse people when you have real evidence, not just your belief.

@david203 It's well documented that Jim Jones sought out the guidance and money of Divine. Both abused the women of their cults.

@@ElCineHefe I know nothing about Jim Jones, but Father Divine did no abuse that I ever heard about, and I knew a number of Father Divine's female followers through my father's being their doctor. It is really evil of you to start or spread rumors when you have no evidence at all of what you claim.

That’s exactly what I’m trying to figure out. Not one thing I’ve read except Wikipe said that they were a cult.
