Little known fact; Roger Black's 43.9 was the first sub-44 relay split ever run by a British athlete. He went on to run sub-44 three more times in his career, and still to this day holds the European record for the most sub-44 relay splits.
Brian Whittle, the only athlete known for losing a shoe! But that wasn't going to cause him to let the team down! A deserved gold for him and the rest of the team against East Germany and USSR.
I always remembered watching this as a kid but have never seen it since. Thanks for uploading and helping me to remember a memory from my childhood. :)
Let's not forget the Olympic silver in 1984. Todd Bennett, Gary Cook and Phil Brown were part of this heritage. What unites all the squads was their passion. Consistently delivered the goods and gave 100% .
@@SuperForest78 Phil Brown was amazing. What U.K runner was ever better than him at anchor? His run in the Olympic final is one of the greats. I actually live in the Handsworth area of Birmingham where he trained and I think he is an inspiration for all U.K runners but especially here. Cheers my friend. WT
I'm reminded of a Simpsons episode when some "very nice but still evil genius" asks Homer if he ever waved goodbye to a shoe.Only Homer Simpson and Brian Whittle can say "yes...once".
British athletics fans look at this 4x400m era and athletes with much affection. So many great characters and stories and many triumphs too.

David Coleman was the best all-round sports commentator in the business and he excelled at athletics.
Yes he was a fantastic commentator sadly missed
I'd put Ron Pickering right up there with him.
@@Idcanymore510 Pickering, Coleman and Stuart Storey were a superb team of commentators in that era.

Brian Whittle I Salute you.
Whittle;
45.10 seconds, with 1 shoe!
The lad had real tenacity.
What a great team.
Brilliant.
Great commentary too.
What a run indeed by Brian Whittle. Major props!
Nice relay! Thanks for the upload!
when Black receives the baton and does a pause, studder step, I KNEW he would pounce with 50m left!
I remember this lost shoe happening but didn't remember that he ran more or less the whole 400m without a shoe!
I also remember the lost shoe.
Post race interview he said something along the lines of
"well I wasn't going to stop and tie
it back on" 😂
Yead dude definitely lost it by hitting the rail pretty hard!
Go Roger!!! Think he should have run more anchor legs for Britain!
Superb superb gold medal brilliant
the Brits certainly have had some good 4 x 400 teams. This was the beginning of their GOLDEN AGE I think
This was the first of 5 successive European titles in this event. Ended by France in 2006.

brits have always been good at the relays, strength in depth
Crazy how much Black's running style changed.
Akabusi the grit the charisma
He's a member of the Scottish Parliament now. Legend.

Чтобы победить спортсменов из СССР , надо было выложиться на 200 %...
100% is all that is possible without doping
